Book excerpt: We Run The House documents everything an American Citizen needs to know to help them gain more control in Congress. A reader will learn about: *Why corporate America and other special interests have so much power and how that power grew to its current size. *The power wielded by the Speaker of the House and the importance of the roles of committees and party leadership. *The mechanisms that can be used to pass bills, which of those mechanisms are commonly used today and who controls those mechanisms. *Who controls the federal budget and how it is controlled, including a brief history on how and why current laws on the subject came to be. *Recent research on the most important areas controlled by the U.S. government including sections on education, immigration, defense and a special extended section on the U.S. health care system. *How to run campaigns and win elections. *The current state of play in the political technology sphere. When already a successful entrepreneur, Cecilia Mackie decided to dedicate herself to doing something that would benefit society. Her proclivity for reading non-fiction books in the areas of economics and politics and her experiences in business, had drawn her attention time and time again to a seriously deficient United States' political system in which corporations and special interests have an overtly corrupting influence. As she read more on the problem she wondered why technology had not been used to solve the problem and one day she had an idea she hoped she would be able to bring to fruition. Before building what she had in mind she decided it would be optimal to understand the intricacies of the system. For several years she conducted laborious research to reveal exactly how actions are controlled in the United States' Congress. That research is condensed in the pages of this book. With this exhaustive research complete, Cecilia Mackie then went about building the technology. You can see the platform in action at www.werunthehouse.org. The website allows U.S. citizens to handpick and nurture someone they know personally to represent them in Congress. It also gives them the tools to pass their own bill. We Run The House Incorporated is registered as an educational charity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's 2127, and the future is at stake . . . Abdi Taalib thought he was moving to Australia for a music scholarship. But after meeting the beautiful and brazen Tegan Oglietti, his world was turned upside down. Tegan's no ordinary girl - she died in 2027, only to be frozen and brought back to life in Abdi's time, 100 years later. Now, all they want is for things to return to normal (or as normal as they can be), but the government has other ideas. Especially since the two just spilled the secrets behind Australia's cryonics project to the world. On the run, Abdi and Tegan have no idea who they can trust - and, when they uncover startling new details about the program, they realize that thousands of lives may be in their hands. Karen Healey offers a suspenseful, page-turning companion to When We Wake that will keep readers on the edge of their seats and make them call into question their own ideas about morality -- and mortality, too.

Book The House That Madigan Built

Download or read book The House That Madigan Built written by Ray Long and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Madigan rose from the Chicago machine to hold unprecedented power as Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives. In his thirty-six years wielding the gavel, Madigan outlasted governors, passed or blocked legislation at will, and outmaneuvered virtually every attempt to limit his reach. Veteran reporter Ray Long draws on four decades of observing state government to provide the definitive political analysis of Michael Madigan. Secretive, intimidating, shrewd, power-hungry--Madigan mesmerized his admirers and often left his opponents too beaten down to oppose him. Long vividly recreates the battles that defined the Madigan era, from stunning James Thompson with a lightning-strike tax increase, to pressing for a pension overhaul that ultimately failed in the courts, to steering the House toward the Rod Blagojevich impeachment. Long also shines a light on the machinery that kept the Speaker in power. Head of a patronage army, Madigan ruthlessly used his influence and fundraising prowess to reward loyalists and aid his daughter’s electoral fortunes. At the same time, he reshaped bills to guarantee he and his Democratic troops shared in the partisan spoils of his legislative victories. Yet Madigan’s position as the state’s seemingly invulnerable power broker could not survive scandals among his close associates and the widespread belief that his time as Speaker had finally reached its end. Unsparing and authoritative, The House That Madigan Built is the page-turning account of one the most powerful politicians in Illinois history.

Book You Love Your Daddy Don t You

Download or read book You Love Your Daddy Don t You written by Sarah Harrison and published by CCB Publishing. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mama, something terrible is wrong with me. There is blood in my panties!" Those were the words of seven-year-old Sarah. Mama told her she must have fallen or something and not to worry. Sarah went away feeling sad; her chance for help was gone! It was Sarah's alter, Susie, who had been sticking pencils and other items in her private place. Susie had come when Sarah was only four years old. Susie had become Daddy's 'special' little girl by sitting on his lap. In return he gave her a dollar for any change she had. Daddy played with Susie's pee pee and it was Susie that slept in the upstairs bedroom with her fourteen-year-old brother. Later in life, two other alters would appear. "You Love Your Daddy, Don't You?" is told through the memories of Sarah. It reveals a child's determination to survive despite profound emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. This was compounded by constant neglect from both parents. About the Author: Sarah Harrison has written several articles for the Women's Institute for Incorporation Therapy's monthly newsletter as well as articles for spiritual magazines. She also volunteers as a mentor in a local school system, helps with special group activities in an assisted living home, and provides guidance to troubled parents and teens on www.experts.com. After the death of her husband, Sarah Harrison moved from Atlanta, Georgia in 2007 to a suburb near Charlotte, North Carolina to be near her grandchildren. She has joined Harrison United Methodist Church and is active in Youth Group, Emmaus, Epiphany, and Faith Partners.

  • Author : Andrew B. Hall

Download or read book Who Wants to Run written by Andrew B. Hall and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing ideological gulf between Democrats and Republicans is one of the biggest issues in American politics today. Our legislatures, composed of members from two sharply disagreeing parties, are struggling to function as the founders intended them to. If we want to reduce the ideological gulf in our legislatures, we must first understand what has caused it to widen so much over the past forty years. Andrew B. Hall argues that we have missed one of the most important reasons for this ideological gulf: the increasing reluctance of moderate citizens to run for office. While political scientists, journalists, and pundits have largely focused on voters, worried that they may be too partisan, too uninformed to vote for moderate candidates, or simply too extreme in their own political views, Hall argues that our political system discourages moderate candidates from seeking office in the first place. Running for office has rarely been harder than it is in America today, and the costs dissuade moderates more than extremists. Candidates have to wage ceaseless campaigns, dialing for dollars for most of their waking hours while enduring relentless news and social media coverage. When moderate candidates are unwilling to run, voters do not even have the opportunity to send them to office. To understand what is wrong with our legislatures, then, we need to ask ourselves the question: who wants to run? If we want more moderate legislators, we need to make them a better job offer.

Book PISA Power and Policy

  • Author : Heinz-Dieter Meyer
  • Publisher : Symposium Books Ltd

Download or read book PISA Power and Policy written by Heinz-Dieter Meyer and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years the PISA assessment has risen to strategic prominence in the international education policy discourse. Sponsored, organized and administered by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), PISA seems well on its way to being institutionalized as the main engine in the global accountability regime. The goal of this book is to problematize this development and PISA as an institution-building force in global education. It scrutinizes the role of PISA in the emerging regime of global educational governance and questions the presumption that the quality of a nation’s school system can be evaluated through a standardized assessment that is insensitive to the world’s vast cultural and institutional diversity. The book raises the question of whether PISA’s dominance in the global educational discourse runs the risk of engendering an unprecedented process of worldwide educational standardization for the sake of hitching schools more tightly to the bandwagon of economic efficiency, while sacrificing their role to prepare students for independent thinking and civic participation.
