Book We Never Hunted Buffalo

Download or read book We Never Hunted Buffalo written by Johanna Feier and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with the filmic self-representation of Native Americans. It focuses on five contemporary features directed by indigenes, and it deconstructs the ways in which they respond to the legacy of the Hollywood Indian. By telling their own cinematic stories, Native Americans have taken up the battle against the century-old one-dimensional characterizations of America's original peoples in the mainstream culture. These indigenous filmmakers highlight the variety and complexity of modern Native America. (Series: MasteRResearch - Vol. 1)

Book Detournement as Pedagogical Praxis

Download or read book Detournement as Pedagogical Praxis written by James Trier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Situationist International (SI) was a Paris-based artistic and political avant-garde group that formed in 1957, went through three distinct phases during its existence, and dissolved in 1972. In 1967, SI leader Guy Debord published his book The Society of the Spectacle, which presents his theory of how “the Spectacle” (i.e., the Capitalist system in its totality) works endlessly (though not always successfully) to transform people into spectators whose sole purposes are to consume commodities and to live de-politicized, passive, isolated, and contemplative lives. To challenge and subvert “the Spectacle,” Debord and his SI associates theorized and practiced the anti-spectacular critical art they called “detournement,” which entails reusing existing artistic and mass-produced elements to create new combinations or ensembles. As Debord wrote in 1956, detournement has the potential to be “a powerful cultural weapon in the service of real class struggle.” In this edited book, the authors contribute chapters about how they created their own detournements and used them as central audio-visual texts in critical projects that they designed and carried out in a variety of pedagogical situations. Most of the projects involved preservice teachers in teacher education courses, and the anti-spectacular purposes include challenging Hollywood’s problematic representations of Native Americans, subverting the racist stereotypes of Latin@s in a popular children’s book, and critiquing the neoliberal agenda of the charter school movement. This book offers readers detailed accounts of pedagogical projects that can serve as examples of the critical possibilities of detournement.

Book Indians on Display

Download or read book Indians on Display written by Norman K Denzin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even as their nations and cultures were being destroyed by colonial expansion across the continent, American Indians became a form of entertainment, sometimes dangerous and violent, sometimes primitive and noble. Creating a fictional wild west, entrepreneurs then exported it around the world. Exhibitions by George Catlin, paintings by Charles King, and Wild West shows by Buffalo Bill Cody were viewed by millions worldwide. Norman Denzin uses a series of performance pieces with historical, contemporary, and fictitious characters to provide a cultural critique of how this version of Indians, one that existed only in the western imagination, was commodified and sold to a global audience. He then calls for a rewriting of the history of the American west, one devoid of minstrelsy and racist pageantry, and honoring the contemporary cultural and artistic visions of people whose ancestors were shattered by American expansionism.

Book Alaska Hunting

Download or read book Alaska Hunting written by Jake Jacobson and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2013-08-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alaska Hunting: Earthworms to Elephants, a collection of 39 stories, is intended to be seasoning for a Hunters' pie, rural Alaska style. Most hunters extol the charismatic mega fauna, but pursuit of lesser game often takes center stage. Occasionally hunting discoveries lead to other endeavors, from jade mining to gold prospecting and fossil recovery. Possibilities are limitless. As we engage in hunting and fishing pursuits memories are laced with the big ones--the exceptional, genetically endowed giants--but some of the brightest memories are of average representatives of their species. What made them so memorable was the combination of circumstances under which they were taken--or lost. Companions, whether human or animal, often make the hunt memorable and its recollections of trophy quality.
