Book excerpt: Rabindranath Tagore, also written Rabindranatha Thakura, (7 May 1861 - 7 August 1941), sobriquet Gurudev, was a Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature and music, as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of Gitanjali and its "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse", he became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. In translation his poetry was viewed as spiritual and mercurial; however, his "elegant prose and magical poetry remain largely unknown outside Bengal. Tagore introduced new prose and verse forms and the use of colloquial language into Bengali literature, thereby freeing it from traditional models based on classical Sanskrit. He was highly influential in introducing the best of Indian culture to the West and vice versa, and he is generally regarded as the outstanding creative artist of the modern Indian subcontinent, being highly commemorated in India and Bangladesh, as well as in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan.

Book A Crown for the King

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ibn Gabirol
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9780195119626
  • Pages : 88 pages

Download or read book A Crown for the King written by Ibn Gabirol and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Crown (or, "A Crown for the King" in Slavitt's translation) is the greatest of Gabirol's poems. Its theme is the problem of the human predicament: the frailty of man and his proclivity to sin, in tension with a benign providence that must leave room for the operation of man's free will and also make available to him the means of penitence. The Royal Crown is still printed in prayerbooks of the Sephardic rite for the Day of Atonement, and among North African Jewish communities (and their offshoots in Israel and elsewhere) it is read communally before the morning service of the Day. In northern Europe and the West this custom has lapsed, however the Royal Crown is still used for private penitential reading.

Book You Crown the Year with Your Goodness

Download or read book You Crown the Year with Your Goodness written by Hans Urs Von Balthasar and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You Crown the Year with Your Goodness is a remarkable work, containing timely and timeless homilies for the liturgical year by a profound spiritual writer. Originally broadcast on the radio, the homilies in this volume span decades and represent some of the best of Father Hans Urs von Balthasarಙs preaching. They are arranged to correspond with the Churchಙs liturgical calendar, and include homilies on major feast days of Christ, his Mother, and the liturgical seasons. Each homily makes for insightful, informative, and inspirational spiritual reading, deepening the readerಙs appreciation for the Word of God and helping him to enter into the great Mystery of God. Also included are Father von Balthasarಙs Yearಙs End Examination of Conscience and four talks on Jesus Christ, that address contemporary debates about the Lord. This work is a feast for the heart and the mind presented by a man described by Pope Benedict as ಜa priest who, in obedience and in a hidden life, never sought personal approval, but rather in a true Ignatian spirit always desired the greater glory of Godಝ. Father Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905 1988), a Swiss theologian, was one of the most important Catholic thinkers and writers of the twentieth century. His many works address theology, literature, philosophy, and spirituality. Included among his books are his multi-volume works The Glory of the Lord, Theo-Drama, and Theo-Logic, as well as such works as Love Alone is Credible, Prayer, and Heart of the World. Highly regarded by Pope John Paul II, Father von Balthasar was named a cardinal of the Catholic Church but he died shortly before being received into the sacred college.

Book Lost Heirs of the Medieval Crown

Download or read book Lost Heirs of the Medieval Crown written by J. F. Andrews and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When William the Conqueror died in 1087 he left the throne of England to William Rufus ... his second son. The result was an immediate war as Rufus's elder brother Robert fought to gain the crown he saw as rightfully his; this conflict marked the start of 400 years of bloody disputes as the English monarchy's line of hereditary succession was bent, twisted and finally broken when the last Plantagenet king, Richard III, fell at Bosworth in 1485. The Anglo-Norman and Plantagenet dynasties were renowned for their internecine strife, and in Lost Heirs we will unearth the hidden stories of fratricidal brothers, usurping cousins and murderous uncles; the many kings - and the occasional queen - who should have been but never were. History is written by the winners, but every game of thrones has its losers too, and their fascinating stories bring richness and depth to what is a colorful period of history. King John would not have gained the crown had he not murdered his young nephew, who was in line to become England's first King Arthur; Henry V would never have been at Agincourt had his father not seized the throne by usurping and killing his cousin; and as the rival houses of York and Lancaster fought bloodily over the crown during the Wars of the Roses, life suddenly became very dangerous indeed for a young boy named Edmund.

  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book King s Crown written by Marie Johnston and published by LE Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I needed a job and a place to live, but after getting snowed in with an older oil tycoon I have to find a way to cool off first. From Marie Johnston comes an age gap, snowed-in with a dash of workplace romance. I got laid off and kicked out of the house I was sharing with my ex—on the same day. Faced with moving home and being put back in charge of my five siblings, I jump at a mysterious job interview. The only catch is that I hitch a ride with a local oil tycoon…on his private jet. Gentry King is also the single dad of the guy I’m interviewing with. Dads aren’t supposed to be that sexy in a suit, ooze power, or make me suddenly desire older men. All I have to do is get through one meeting in the middle of nowhere and then I can go my own way. Only a snow storm strands us in a small town. Gentry and I find the last hotel room available, and I’m so relieved when we get into the room I almost don’t freeze solid at the sight of one bed. I don’t need to risk my chances by sleeping with Gentry, but once I wake up next to him I don’t have a snowball’s chance in a fire pit of resisting. King's Crown is a standalone novel in the Oil Kings series. Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - My kinsman and myself were returning to Calcutta from our Puja trip when we met the man in a train. From his dress and bearing we took him at first for an up-country Mahomedan, but we were puzzled as we heard him talk. He discoursed upon all subjects so confidently that you might think the Disposer of All Things consulted him at all times in all that He did. Hitherto we had been perfectly happy, as we did not know that secret and unheard-of forces were at work, that the Russians had advanced close to us, that the English had deep and secret policies, that confusion among the native chiefs had come to a head. But our newly-acquired friend said with a sly smile: "There happen more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are reported in your newspapers." As we had never stirred out of our homes before, the demeanour of the man struck us dumb with wonder. Be the topic ever so trivial, he would quote science, or comment on the Vedas, or repeat quatrains from some Persian poet; and as we had no pretence to a knowledge of science or the Vedas or Persian, our admiration for him went on increasing, and my kinsman, a theosophist, was firmly convinced that our fellow-passenger must have been supernaturally inspired by some strange magnetism" or "occult power," by an "astral body" or something of that kind.
