Book excerpt: Émile Gaboriau (November 9, 1832 - September 28, 1873) was a French writer, novelist, journalist, and a pioneer of detective fiction. His first detective novel, Monsieur Lecoq 1869, which featured an amateur detective and a young police officer (Monsieur Lecoq), was a success and the Lecoq was the hero in Gaboriau's 3 later detective novels. The character of Lecoq was based on a real-life thief turned police officer, Eugène François Vidocq (1775-1857), whose own memoirs, Les Vrais Mémoires de Vidocq, mixed fiction and fact. It may also have been influenced by the villainous Monsieur Lecoq, one of the main protagonists of Féval's Les Habits Noirs book series. Gaboriau was a pioneer and a great success in his time until Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes which diverted global attention from his Monsieur Lecoq. The story was produced on the stage in 1872. A long series of novels dealing with the annals of the police court followed, and proved very popular. Gaboriau died in Paris of pulmonary apoplexy.

Book excerpt: The Sinclair Sisters of Cripple Creek—Book 3 Headed toward a fresh start but tethered by her past, Vivian longs to break free, to find forgiveness and love. At last, the sisters are reunited! The youngest Sinclair, the family “baby”, is moving from Maine to Cripple Creek, Colorado and joining Kat, Nell, and Ida. But Vivian is a young woman with a will of her own, and she made some decisions back in Portland that have begun to haunt her. Will she be able to live up to the expectations of her three perfect and now happily settled sisters? The sisters warmly welcome Vivian to the mountain west, but the wild-and-woolly mining town isn’t ripe with opportunities for a respectable young woman. The youngest Sinclair sister is determined to make her own way, so when she’s offered a job as a hostess in a sporting house, she takes it, thinking the position is appropriate for a tainted, unlovable woman like herself. Although she’s convinced she’ll never be asked to entertain privately, Vivian keeps her employment a secret from her sisters, knowing they’d be mortified—as will Carter Alwyn, the kind and godly sheriff ’s deputy who’s sweet on her. Vivian is descending into a life of secrets, lying to the very people who love her and could help her heal from her mistakes. Will an outpouring of grace remind her that she is still God’s beloved and that her past can be washed as clean as Rocky Mountain snow?

Book excerpt: “Deadly Ties is just an all-around amazing story. The suspense will have readers at the edge of their seats!” —Fallen Angel Reviews: Five Angels: Recommended Read Some bonds are love . . . Taylor Reese is done with men—especially egotistical ones—no matter how charming they may be. The only exception to her “no men” rule is her eight-year-old adopted son, Ryan, who is wonderfully adjusted considering the environment his parents forced him to endure. Both are starting over in the Washington, D.C., area and aren’t looking for anything more than peace and quiet. Thanks to Gavin Kinncaid, that peace and quiet is nothing more then a fleeting dream. Some ties can never be broken . . . Dr. Gavin Kinncaid, one of the most successful doctors in his field and well aware of it, knows women—or so he thinks, until he meets Taylor Reese and realizes he doesn’t know anything about the opposite sex. Taylor is nothing like any woman he’s ever met. More than that, she’s the only woman he’s ever wanted to strangle. But when fate throws them together on a rain-swept deserted road, passion soon twists their feelings into more than antagonism. First desire, then friendship, and finally love. And some bonds are deadly . . . As the three of them grow closer, learning to trust and building bonds none of them ever thought they’d have, a menace approaches. A menace that will destroy each of them and the bonds they've worked so hard to forge: Ryan's mother has escaped from prison, and she has only one plan—to rip this happy family apart and reclaim what she considers hers, no matter the cost.

Book Among Hibiscus and Roses

Download or read book Among Hibiscus and Roses written by Sun-Hae Kim and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few years ago, Sun-Hae Kim met a female student at a British museum who was studying medieval women's social activities. She was unable to find information from women at that time because they didn't leave much in written form. She then looked around for some nurses' autobiographies and again found very little information available, even by Florence Nightingale. In response to this lack of personal writing from nurses, she presents Among Hibiscus and Roses, an account of her years as a nurse. She tells of the challenges of being an army nurse and of the fun times with her fellow nurses. She approached each new challenge with expectation and the hope that she would be helping more people. When she immigrated to the United States, she faced new cultures, languages, and social life; she met many new and interesting people. Throughout her transition, she was filled with wonder and excitement for her new life. Most importantly, she recounts the challenges and rewards of being a nurse for over thirty-seven years, in both South Korea and the United States. She lived proudly a life that was not old fashioned and yet still proved she could be happy and healthy without indulging in drugs, alcohol, sex, and gambling. Sharing the too-often-unheard story of a nurse, Among Hibiscus and Roses describes a unique and out-of-the-ordinary life journey.

Book Sergeant Sappho

Download or read book Sergeant Sappho written by Sidney K Lebhart and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Being gay and being in the Army was a never-ending struggle for me. Nothing, and no one was safe, and being on guard continuously for almost ten years left indelible scars. In spite of everything, being a veteran is my proudest identification." Sidney K. Lebhart says of her upfront memoir Sergeant Sappho, "I am a lesbian who served in the U.S. Army from 1969 until 1979. This is the story of my career, starting with the trials of basic training. It tells of the places I was stationed, how I became a drill sergeant, and features my loves and losses through the years as I served in secret from an Army determined to destroy the career hopes of gay soldiers." Sid describes herself as a child of the fifties and sixties who just wanted to make sense of who she is. A family background of military service led her to believe the Army would be a safe place to grow up and really find herself. The significant people in this story about her life include Sid's gay ex-husband whom she describes as "a great, good friend." Mary Ellen was Sid's one great love, while Mandy was the gentle love who gave Sid the most precious of gifts: a child.

Book With God on Our Side

Download or read book With God on Our Side written by William Curtis Martin and published by Broadway. This book was released on 2005 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of the Religious Right is one of the most important political and cultural stories of our time. To many, this controversial movement threatens to upset the nation's delicate balance of religious and secular interests. To others, the Religious Right is valiantly struggling to preserve religious liberty and to prove itself as the last, best hope to save America's soul. In With God on Our Side --the first balanced account of conservative Christians' impact on post-war politics--William Martin paints a vivid and authoritative portrait of America's most powerful political interest group. Although its members now number between forty and sixty million people, the Religious Right has not always carried the tremendous--and growing--political clout it enjoys today. A hundred years ago, scattered groups of conservative Christians worked fervently to spread the Gospel, but their involvement in politics was marginal. Early in this century, however, a series of charismatic and ambitious leaders began transforming the movement; by the election of John F. Kennedy as our first Catholic president, the Religious Right had found its voice. Politics and religion began mixing as never before. From Richard Nixon's strategic manipulation of Graham's religious influence in the 1970s, to Ronald Reagan's association with Falwell's Moral Majority in the 1980s, to the Christian Coalition's emergence as a slick, sophisticated political machine, the line separating the pulpit from the presidency became increasingly blurred. Now, preachers such as Graham, Falwell, and Pat Robertson preside over ministries so vast and well organized that most politicians can ill afford to ignore their views--or lose their votes. In recent years, the Religious Right's political influence has propelled it into spheres beyond pure politics. Race relations, abortion and reproductive rights, school curricula, the nature and role of the family--conservative Christians have embraced all of these socially charged issues, and their activism has irrevocably altered the way America confronts its thorniest problems. How does a free society draw the line between Church and State without removing religious conviction from public life? What motivates individual Americans to do battle in the culture wars? Most importantly, when politicians and religiously motivated activists join forces, who holds the reins? Drawing on over 100 new interviews with key figures in the movement, William Martin brilliantly captures the spirit of the age as he explores both sides of this dramatic debate. Written in conjunction with the producers of the public television series of the same name, this landmark book is essential reading for all Americans--conservative and liberal, fundamentalist and atheist--who care about the spiritual health and political future of our country. From the Hardcover edition.

Book When Angels Fight

Download or read book When Angels Fight written by Leslie F. King and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen on The Today Show When she was fifteen years old, Leslie King ran away from an abusive home, looking for a better life and longing for real love. What she found instead was a man who wooed her just long enough to trap her in a life of prostitution. She became one of the many thousands of trafficked individuals in the United States, a number that continues to rise—in the biggest cities and in the most idyllic towns. As is true for so many in similar situations, life was nothing but brokenness and pain for Leslie. After years of hopelessness, she finally decided to take her own life. And then God spoke. With his promise that he was with her and had mighty things for her to accomplish ringing in her ears, she got off the streets, got clean, and got to work on the mission to which he'd called her. Now Leslie is a passionate and heroic advocate for other trafficked women and teenage girls in her community and across the country. More than a gritty, no-holds-barred deliverance story, When Angels Fight includes powerful advice from Leslie and those she's encountered in her work—police officers, judges, and other advocates and activists. She also shows you what YOU can do to make a real difference in your own community. Her call from God includes marshaling others to the cause and equipping them to fight alongside her and the angels who battle for God's children—just as they once fought for her.
