Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work Named a Best Book of the Year by The Root Chosen by Emma Straub as a Best New Celebrity Memoir “A book of essays as raw and honest as anyone has ever produced.” — Lena Dunham, Lenny Letter In the spirit of Amy Poehler’s Yes Please, Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl, and Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist, a powerful collection of essays about gender, sexuality, race, beauty, Hollywood, and what it means to be a modern woman. One month before the release of the highly anticipated film The Birth of a Nation, actress Gabrielle Union shook the world with a vulnerable and impassioned editorial in which she urged our society to have compassion for victims of sexual violence. In the wake of rape allegations made against director and actor Nate Parker, Union—a forty-four-year-old actress who launched her career with roles in iconic ’90s movies—instantly became the insightful, outspoken actress that Hollywood has been desperately awaiting. With honesty and heartbreaking wisdom, she revealed her own trauma as a victim of sexual assault: "It is for you that I am speaking. This is real. We are real." In this moving collection of thought provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor, Union uses that same fearlessness to tell astonishingly personal and true stories about power, color, gender, feminism, and fame. Union tackles a range of experiences, including bullying, beauty standards, and competition between women in Hollywood, growing up in white California suburbia and then spending summers with her black relatives in Nebraska, coping with crushes, puberty, and the divorce of her parents. Genuine and perceptive, Union bravely lays herself bare, uncovering a complex and courageous life of self-doubt and self-discovery with incredible poise and brutal honesty. Throughout, she compels us to be ethical and empathetic, and reminds us of the importance of confidence, self-awareness, and the power of sharing truth, laughter, and support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grammy Award–winning gospel singer, television star, and radio host Erica Campbell speaks to women of all shapes and sizes and “takes the time to dissect and reveal the beauty that exists in being our authentic, vulnerable selves” (Sarah Jakes Roberts, author of Don’t Settle for Safe) and celebrating the person God made you to be. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be pretty. But Erica Campbell believes we were made to be so much more. As so many women struggle with issues of low self-esteem, depression, and unhealthy habits, Campbell offers a spiritual path that cuts through the highly commercialized, hypersexualized media messages of popular culture, leading women to the true meaning of “pretty” and the true self God wants them to be: empowered, confident, loving, and real. Erica uses her own personal and professional triumphs and failures and the stories of others to help motivate women to redefine and develop true beauty based on biblical principles. With inspirational prose, she shows us how to overcome childhood struggles, push past fears, sharpen our spiritual IQ, and free ourselves from guilt, shame, and low self-confidence. More Than Pretty is a stirring call to action for all women to a life full of power and purpose.

Living under the influence of these programs has caused so much chaos and trauma. There is historical, generational and personal trauma that is impacting the way we live life. As more people wake up spiritually, the need for healing is crucial. These deep seeded programs that keep us in bondage must be recognized so that our God given true nature can emerge. Book excerpt: This book of poetry says it all. A Gift is divided into four sections, and each section has poems that fit the flavor of that section. The gift comes in the insight that accompanies each poem. There is nothing preachy herejust a deep reflective sharing. In Natures Ways, the first section, you can feel her love for nature. It is this love of the environment that is one of our key resonances. She shares her life lessons interwoven with the tapestry of nature. Part two is Love Principles. I am an incurable romantic. My heart soars when someone receives so deeply and gives so profoundly. She is nuanced in her relationships and has a quite profound affinity for cosmic forces. Part three is The Past. In this section one has a sense of her soul traveling through life, her aspirations, and her relationships. One feels the intensity in which she lives life, the depths of her giving, and her capacity for love. Part four, Life Principles, is exactly that. One can feel the prisms in which she captures life. Nuanced in and out, this section offers the wisdom of perception and reflection. Old Soul. Grace Eleazar is an old soul, as is evident in her reflections on life and her longings. One senses the maturity of a well-traveled soul that has learned to take life without pettiness or bitterness but goes deep despite whatever pain its lessons offer. The Gift. This is such an appropriate title for a book wherein the author bestows gifts for life itself. On every page and in every line, she gives of herself in the honesty of her sharing. One can live life and then go on, or one can live life and make that life a gift. This is in essence what The Gift is about. It is my honor to be the authors friend.
