Book excerpt: China contributes a large part to rice production, one of the most important crops in the world. It is estimated that in China rice constitutes about half of the total food production, covering an area of about 30 % of \08 hectares of cultivated land of the whole country. Owing to the peculiar water regime, paddy soils possess quite different properties physically, chemically and biologically as compared with those of upland soils. Such properties have a conspicuous effect on fertility and management practice of paddy field. For the purpose of summing up the past work and opening up new prospects, a "Symposium on Paddy Soils" was organized under the auspices of Academia Sinica, held on October 19-24, 1980 in Nanjing, which was followed by a seven-day paddy soil excursion in the lower Changjiang Delta. In addition to 120 Chinese soil scientists, 56 guests coming from America, Asia, Europe and Oceania attended the symposium on invitation. A total of 110 papers were presented either orally or by poster. All these are collected and published in the present proceedings which we hope may be helpful to the scientific exchanges between soil scientists of China and other countries.

Current understanding of P processes has evolved and this new information needs to be incorporated into the current models. Filling this need, Modeling Phosphorus in the Environment describes basic approaches to modeling P, how the current models implement these approaches, and ways to improve them. The book sets the scene with a review of general approaches to modeling runoff and erosion, P in runoff, leaching of P, stream processes that affect P, and an examination of the important issue of model uncertainty. It describes state-of-the-science watershed-scale P transport models including dynamic semi-disturbed models, models of intermediate complexity, and two lumped models. Phosphorus Indexes (PIs) represent one end of the modeling spectrum and the book takes a comprehensive look at PIs developed in each state, and illustrates some of the problems encountered when incorporating PIs into farm-scale manure management software. The book discusses monitoring data, which is critical for calibrating models, and concludes with suggestions for improving the modeling of P. From researching mechanisms to applying regulations, the uses of phosphorus models have increased as our knowledge of the effects of phosphorus in the environment has increased. As indicated by its extended title, Lectures on the Inorganic Nutrition of Plants, it is a collection of lectures - the JOHN M. PRATHER lectures, which he was invited in 1942 to give. at Harvard University and presented there between April 10 and 23 of that year - 41 years before the publication of the present volume. They were not "originally intended for publication" but fortunately HOAGLAND was persuaded to publish them; the book appeared in 1944. It might at first blush seem inappropriate to draw comparisons between a book embodying a set of lectures by a single author and an encyclopedic volume with no less than 37 contributors. But HOAGLAND'S book was a compre hensive account of the state of this science in his time, as the present volume is for ours. It was then still possible for one person, at least for a person of HOAGLAND'S intellectual breadth and catholicity of interests, to encompass many major areas of the entire field, from the soil substrate to the metabolic roles of nitrogen, potassium, and other nutrients, and from basic scientific topics to the application of plant nutritional research in solving problems encountered in the field.
