Book Natural and Synthetic Waxes

Download or read book Natural and Synthetic Waxes written by Ernst Krendlinger and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural and Synthetic Waxes A compilation of all relevant information for the production and use of waxes in technical applications Waxes are among the oldest organic substances used by mankind. Before all others, beeswax is known to have played a role in human history for thousands of years. But over time, many other wax species have been detected and exploited, and prepared for different utilizations. Today, we possess knowledge of a great variety of different types of waxes. Unfortunately, there still is no broadly accepted definition of a wax: for the relatively few wax chemists, waxes are usually defined by their physico-chemical properties more than by their chemical constitution. Waxes are not uniform but oligomeric and polymeric substances, not simply describable with a chemical formula. The realm of waxes encompasses fully or partly natural, refined, partly or fully synthetic products, which can be extended by “wax-like” products which do not fulfil all definition criteria. Waxes are offered in different forms like pellets, granules, powders, or micropowders. Their number of technical applications runs into thousands. However, waxes in most cases are just adjuvants or additives, and with few exceptions like candles not known to a broader public. Only few publications over the last decades tried to present a more comprehensive overview of heir chemistry, chemical composition, their physical and analytical properties, their applications, and their sometimes astonishing history. Based on personal experience and expertise, the authors intend to present an overview on the main classes of waxes, their origin, history, future, and potential fate. Economical aspects like market size and development, ecological impacts and challenges, and regulatory issues are also addressed. Waxes are indispensable products in everyday life and in industry and technology, though mostly not even visible or distinguishable to experts. They deserve more than the role of a “poor cousin” in chemistry and technology.

Book Wax Craft All About Beeswax

Download or read book Wax Craft All About Beeswax written by T. W. Cowan and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wax Craft, All About Beeswax: Its History, Production, Adulteration, and Commercial Value I am frequently asked to recommend some book treating of beeswax, but as no work on the subject has appeared for some time past, reference can only be made to textbooks, which, although containing much information on bee-keeping, devote very little space to the question of beeswax. Nearly twenty years ago I translated from the German a small pamphlet of nineteen pages on beeswax by M. J. Dennler, which found a ready sale; but this has for some time past been out of print, and, in deference to requests for a larger book, this work has been brought out, in the hope that it will supply a long-felt want for information on the subject. Beeswax is an important article of commerce, large quantities being annually imported into this country for use in the manufacture of the finest candles, also by soap-makers and chemists in various preparations. But beyond these requirements, the extension of bee-keeping on modern methods has created a yearly demand for thousands of tons of pure wax in the production of comb-foundation for the use of bee-keepers. From the very earliest ages, too, the manufacture of candles, figures, and flowers from beeswax was known to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, and I have therefore thought it well to give an historical outline of the subject, followed by separate chapters on the production of wax, its uses in commerce and manufactures. Download or read book The Tears of Re written by Gene Kritsky and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Egyptian mythology, when the ancient Egyptian sun god Re cried, his tears turned into honey bees upon touching the ground. For this reason, the honey bee was sacrosanct in ancient Egyptian culture. From the art depicting bees on temple walls to the usage of beeswax as a healing ointment, the honey bee was a pervasive cultural motif in ancient Egypt because of its connection to the sun god Re. Gene Kritsky delivers a concise introduction of the relationship between the honey bee and ancient Egyptian culture, through the lenses of linguistics, archeology, religion, health, and economics. Kritsky delves into ancient Egypt's multifaceted society, and traces the importance of the honey bee in everything from death rituals to trade. In doing so, Kritsky brings new evidence to light of how advanced and fascinating the ancient Egyptians were. This richly illustrated work appeals to a broad range of interests. For archeology lovers, Kritsky delves into the archeological evidence of Egyptian beekeeping and discusses newly discovered tombs, as well as evidence of manmade hives. Linguists will be fascinated by Kritsky's discussion of the first documented written evidence of the honeybee hieroglyph. And anyone interested in ancient Egypt or ancient cultures in general will be intrigued by Kritsky's treatment of the first documented beekeepers. This book provides a unique social commentary of a community so far removed from modern humans chronologically speaking, and yet so fascinating because of the stunning advances their society made. Beekeeping is the latest evidence of how ahead of their times the Egyptians were, and the ensuing narrative is as captivating as every other aspect of ancient Egyptian culture.

Book Preparation and modifying a new type of waxes

Download or read book Preparation and modifying a new type of waxes written by Amer Taqa and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wissenschaftlicher Aufsatz aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Medizin - Zahnmedizin, , Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: To prepare and modify different wax compositions in order to find out the most suitable formula that has almost the same properties of dental modeling wax used in dentistry. Materials and Methods: Three groups of waxes (220 samples) with different compositions regarding its origin (Al–Dora refinery waxes, natural bees wax–North of Iraq, and commercially available Iraqi waxes), additives such as starch, sodium–carboxyl methylcellulose (Na–CMC), rosin, or nylon, and coloring agents were prepared. The samples were tested for their melting range, 21 samples only had a melting range that nearly coincides with that of the dental waxes such as Major and Cavex. Results: The resultant 21 samples were tested for their softening, trimming, penetration, residue materials and solubility. Only 4 samples showed properties that are closely similar to that of Major and Cavex wax. The results of melting point ranged from 69–80oC. Softening test showed that the samples which contain nylon, Na– CMC, or rosin were softened without adhering to the fingers. Trimming test showed that they were trimmed easily and clearly. Penetration test showed that, some samples had the similar measurements of Major and Cavex wax (0.6–0.9mm). Residue materials showed that all samples had no residue of wax materials on acrylic teeth after wax elimination procedure. All the prepared waxes were soluble in ether (acetone), and petroleum spirit (benzene). Conclusion: Six new modeling wax materials were prepared according to ADA specification No.24. Three of new wax materials consist of nylon (polystyrene 1.71–2.13%); the other two novel modeling waxes were fabricated by using additive materials (Na–CMC and rosin).

Book Wax Craft All about Beeswax Its History Production Adulteration and Commercial Value

This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... Chapter X. MANUFACTURE OF WAX FLOWERS, FRUITS, AND FIGURES. ALTHOUGH wax flowers are no longer so fashionable as in former days, a great many are still manufactured. Museums make extensive use of them for illustrating botanical specimens, some being such exquisite works of art that it is difficult to believe they are not real but only imitations in wax. None but perfectly pure beeswax is used in making, and the greatest care is taken that it contains no adulterant. None of the numerous mineral or vegetable waxes have the plasticity of pure beeswax, and they are therefore not suitable for such work. The artist mixes a little Venice turpentine with the wax, which adds to the plasticity during the process of working, and as it evaporates in course of time, the necessary hardness is obtained. The turpentine is thoroughly boiled in water until the latter runs off quite clear, and then incorporated with the molten wax in sufficient quantity to turn the latter into a thick paste. It is then put into moulds and worked up into the desired forms. The proper proportions are 4 parts of turpentine to 50 parts of wax. To impart the required colour of natural flowers to the wax the pigments are mixed with it, as explained on page 120. In addition to this, various shadings are obtained by rubbing in dry powdered colours of the desired tints either with the fingers or various-sized stumps, with which the finest detail can be worked in. When making wax flowers the chief materials used are sheets of wax no thicker than paper, from which are formed both petals and leaves. To make these wax-sheets strips of paper, sized and glazed, are soaked in water, and the superfluous moisture removed by placing them between blotting-paper. These damp strips are then...
