Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wax Flowers and Fruit Modeling Without a Teacher: With Illustrations; A Practical Treatise on the Art of Modeling and Coloring Wax, So as to Imitate Almost Any Kind of Flower or Fruit; Also, Teaches How to Make Wax Leaves, Crosses, &C It will be necessary to have the wax of different degrees of thick ness, as some flowers require much thicker wax than others. The double or thick wax is used for such flowers as Pond Lilies, Came lias, etc. Many persons use single wax, and by inserting a very thin mus lin between two sheets, and pressing them firmly together, thus make the leaves stronger and better able to endure hard moulding. The wax now comes all prepared in sheets, and the colors most needed in sheet-wax are White, Yellow and Green. More white wax is used than other colors in making flowers, as most of the other col ors can be produced by using the dry colors upon the White wax. These colors come prepared in bottles ready for use. Some persons may not be successful in coloring the wax, and so there are many other colors in sheet-wax - such as Violet, Pink, Crimson, Blue, Scarlet, etc., etc - but these are seldom required, as almost any person of ingenuity and skill can do what coloring is necessary. Book The Art of Modeling Flowers in Wax Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Art of Modeling Flowers in Wax Classic Reprint written by George Worgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Modeling Flowers in Wax The art of imitating flowers in wax is, perhaps, the most beautiful method known of preserving a life-like representation of garden-gems, as the form, color, and texture can be imitated to perfection; while artistic feeling on the part of the student is required to complete the idea that flowers can be made to resemble nature in every respect, as regards form, color, the texture, stamens, and other parts OI the natural flower. Most of the flowers I have seen made in wax I will not call imitations of nature, but stiff, awkward, badly tinted things, devoid of beauty, verisimili tude, or taste. Nothing looks so unlike a natural flower and these faults can be easily avoided by a little Observation of nature. Mrs. Peachey being, for the reasons stated in this work, compelled to circumscribe the giving of lessons, if not to discontinue instructions altogether in a few months, the book will, therefore, under any circumstances, be indispensable. Floral wreaths made by the ancient Egyptians were formed from thin plates of horn stained in different colors, sometimes also of leaves of copper, gilt or silvered over. The ancient Romans excelled in the art of imitating flowers in wax and in this branch of the art attained a degree of perfection which has not been approached in modern times. Crassus, renowned for his wealth, gave to the victors in the games he celebrated at Rome crowns of artificial leaves made of gold and silver.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
