Book The Charismatic Century

Download or read book The Charismatic Century written by Jack W. Hayford and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2009-06-27 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most profound event in modern church history took place not in a cathedral but in a clapboard church in Los Angeles. A small congregation of mostly African American worshipers embraced the concept that New Testament signs and wonders were still available in the early twentieth century. Their dramatic spiritual revival, which became known as the Azusa Street Revival, attracted believers worldwide and launched the modern Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. This event forever changed Christian worship, music, and expression. In commemoration of Azusa Street's 100th anniversary, Jack Hayford tells the story, revealing how Christians are still experiencing its impact.

Book Hippie Voices to God s Heart

Download or read book Hippie Voices to God s Heart written by David L. Ream and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a phenomenological inquiry into the fruitful ministry of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa’s Sunday Morning Worship Service. The purpose was to uncover and explicate the quintessential elements of worship leading from the life experiences of those worship leaders who shared the platform with Pastor Chuck Smith, known as the father of the Jesus Movement. The book examines Calvary Chapel’s inauspicious beginnings in a senior citizen trailer park recreation center as it explores key elements of Kay and Chuck Smith’s ministry. The church and the couple combined in 1965. By 1968, the church and the Smiths became a spiritual home replete with a spiritual mama and papa, ministering to hippies seeking everlasting love and eternal peace. The fruitfulness of Calvary Chapel’s ministry is its ability to reproduce maturing Christians that reproduce maturing Christians. This replication occurred thousands of times as the movement blossomed and spread to new churches and new ministries across the United States and globally. The phenomenon spawned a megachurch movement and birthed the modern Christian worship music industry. The hippies were alternately loathed and loved in their era. Perhaps the hippies’ most enduring and endearing contributions to twenty-first-century culture are traced to the Jesus movement.

Download or read book Waves of Renewal written by Chris Uhlenbeck and published by Hotei Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Waves of renewal" traces the history of Japanese printmaking following an era of decline beginning in the late nineteenth century. The early twentieth century witnessed the emergence of two principal printmaking movements. The first "shin hanga" (new print) reinvented and revitalised the conventional genres of landscape, beauties and actors. The second "s saku hanga" (creative print) was inspired by the dialogue between Western and Japanese art and aesthetics. "Waves of renewal" is the most comprehensive publication to date to focus on the holdings of the Nihon no hanga collection in Amsterdam. The 277 prints included showcase the sophistication of "shin hanga" and the boldness of "s saku hanga." An introductory essay sets the stage, followed by ten shorter essays by noted scholars in the field that centre on aspects integral to our understanding of early to mid-twentieth century Japanese printmaking. Each print is documented and annotated in the extensive catalogue section."

Book Warfare and Waves

  • Author : Peter Herriot
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2015-12-11
  • ISBN : 1498226213
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Warfare and Waves written by Peter Herriot and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the Church of England perceived by many as homophobic, misogynist, or just plain weird? Because two movements within it, the Calvinists and the Charismatics, have recently achieved a degree of influence disproportionate to their numerical strength. And how has this come about? Both movements are well organized and wealthy. The Calvinists have played the media and ecclesiastical politics games with skill and determination, while sternly identifying themselves as guardians of the one true Reformed doctrine, having no truck with "the world." The Charismatics, on the other hand, have embraced many elements of late-modern culture but retain a premodern worldview. Peter Herriot argues that to recover from the opportunity costs and reputational damage that it has suffered at their hands, the Church of England must seize back the agenda from the Calvinists and face outwards rather than inwards. In its efforts to come to terms with globalization, the elephant in the Anglican crypt, the church's leadership will need to sideline the Calvinists and encourage the Charismatics with their recent increased social involvement. Written by a social psychologist, this book is full of detailed case studies that give a vivid insight into the organizational structures and subcultures of these two very different evangelical movements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Permanent Waves boldly enters the ongoing debates over the utility of the "wave" metaphor for capturing the complex history of women's rights by offering fresh perspectives on the diverse movements that comprise U.S. feminism, past and present. Seventeen essays--both original and reprinted--address continuities, conflicts, and transformations among women's movements in the United States from the early nineteenth century through today. A respected group of contributors from diverse generations and backgrounds argue for new chronologies, more inclusive conceptualizations of feminist agendas and participants, and fuller engagements with contestations around particular issues and practices. Race, class, and sexuality are explored within histories of women's rights and feminism as well as the cultural and intellectual currents and social and political priorities that marked movements for women's advancement and liberation. These essays question whether the concept of waves surging and receding can fully capture the complexities of U.S. feminisms and suggest models for reimagining these histories from radio waves to hip-hop.

Book Grassroots Unity in the Charismatic Renewal

Download or read book Grassroots Unity in the Charismatic Renewal written by Connie Ho Yan Au and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-02-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the nature of grassroots unity in the British charismatic renewal in the 1970s and its significance to ecumenism. The study is based on the five international conferences of the Fountain Trust and focuses on two grassroots activities: worship in general and the celebration of the Eucharist in particular. Worship in this setting nurtured unity through charisms, but the Eucharist exposed the inadequacy of this grassroots unity because of doctrinal and ecclesiological differences. This book aims to suggest a way forward by searching for the complementarity of institution and charisms, and Christology and Pneumatology in a charismatic context. It argues that the two emphases of the charismatic renewal, charisms, and the Holy Spirit, complement the institutional commitments of the church and ecumenism. The concepts of Christus praesens and Spiriti praesens are considered intrinsic to the charisms, and thus Christology and Pneumatology should both be considered significant for ecumenism. The study finally discusses the complementarity of ecumenical institutions and the charismatic renewal, the convergence of ecumenical streams, and continuity in modern ecumenical history.
