Book excerpt: ABSTRACT WAVEFORM DESIGN FOR PULSE DOPPLER RADAR AÐIRMAN, Handan M.S., Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Mete Severcan December 2005, 100 pages This study is committed to the investigation of optimum waveforms for a pulse doppler radar which uses a non linear high power amplifier in the transmitter. The optimum waveform is defined as the waveform with the lowest peak and integrated side lobe level, the narrowest main lobe in its autocorrelation and the narrowest bandwidth in its spectrum. The Pulse Compression method is used in radar systems since it is more advantageous in terms of the resolution. Among all pulse compression methods, the main focus of this study is on Phase Coding. Two types of radar waveforms assessed throughout this study are Discrete Phase Modulated Waveforms and Continuous Phase Modulated Waveforms. The continuous phase modulated waveforms are arranged under two titles: the memoryless phase modulated waveform and the waveform modulated with memory. In order to form memoryless continuous phase waveforms, initially, discrete phase codes are obtained by using Genetic Algorithm. Following this process, a new phase shaping pulse is defined and applied on the discrete phase waveforms. Among the applicable modulation with memory techniques, Continuous Phase Modulation maintains to be the most appropriate. The genetic algorithm is used to find different lengths of optimum data sequences which form the continuous phase scheme.

Book excerpt: The book is organized into three parts, each one building on the material of the previous sections. Part I (Chapters 1-8) covers the basic principles to lay sound foundations for the following parts of the book. It emphasizes classic processing techniques, especially the fast Fourier transform (FFT), and microwave engineering issues, antennas, and hardware. The second part of the book deals with the theory and techniques specific to pulse Doppler radar. This is subdivided into Part IIA (Chapters 9-10), which covers high PRF pulse Doppler, and Part IIB (Chapters 11-15), which covers medium PRF pulse Doppler. A major theme is that of PRF selection and optimization, other waveform design issues, and the problem of ghosting. While high and medium PRF pulse Doppler techniques have become synonymous with airborne fire control radars, they are used over a broad spectrum of airborne and surface-based radar applications. Part II does emphasize the airborne radar case, but it does not neglect the surface-based radar. Finally, Part III (Chapters 16-19) presents a series of four case studies. Each of these case studies applies the material of Part II whilst also highlighting additional radar techniques (and, in some cases, non-radar considerations) specific to the application. Such is the prevalence of pulse Doppler radars today; the number of case studies that could have been considered is well into double figures. However, the four presented here suffice to illustrate the wide variety of pulse Doppler radar applications.

With an ever-increasing number wireless users, it is critical to develop signal processing based spectrum sharing algorithms to achieve cooperative use of the allocated spectrum among multiple systems in order to reduce interference between systems. This work studies the radar and communications systems coexistence problem using two main approaches. The first approach develops methodologies to increase radar target tracking performance under low signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) conditions due to the coexistence of strong communications interference. The second approach jointly optimizes the performance of both systems by co-designing a common transmit waveform.When concentrating on improving radar tracking performance, a pulsed radar that is tracking a single target coexisting with high powered communications interference is considered. Although the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) on the covariance of an unbiased estimator of deterministic parameters provides a bound on the estimation mean squared error (MSE), there exists an SINR threshold at which estimator covariance rapidly deviates from the CRLB. After demonstrating that different radar waveforms experience different estimation SINR thresholds using the Barankin bound (BB), a new radar waveform design method is proposed based on predicting the waveform-dependent BB SINR threshold under low SINR operating conditions. A novel method of predicting the SINR threshold value for maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is proposed. A relationship is shown to exist between the formulation of the BB kernel and the probability of selecting sidelobes for the MLE. This relationship is demonstrated as an accurate means of threshold prediction for the radar target parameter estimation of frequency, time-delay and angle-of-arrival. For the co-design radar and communications system problem, the use of a common transmit waveform for a pulse-Doppler radar and a multiuser communications system is proposed. The signaling scheme for each system is selected from a class of waveforms with nonlinear phase function by optimizing the waveform parameters to minimize interference between the two systems and interference among communications users. Using multi-objective optimization, a trade-off in system performance is demonstrated when selecting waveforms that minimize both system interference and tracking MSE.

Book excerpt: High resolution windspeed profile measurements are needed to provide reliable detection of hazardous low altitude windshear with an airborne pulse Doppler radar. The system phase noise in a Doppler weather radar may degrade the spectrum moment estimation quality and the clutter cancellation capability which are important in windshear detection. Also the bias due to weather return Doppler spectrum skewness may cause large errors in pulse pair spectral parameter estimates. These effects are analyzed for the improvement of an airborne Doppler weather radar signal processing design. A method is presented for the direct measurement of windspeed gradient using low pulse repetition frequency (PRF) radar. This spatial gradient is essential in obtaining the windshear hazard index. As an alternative, the modified Prony method is suggested as a spectrum mode estimator for both the clutter and weather signal. Estimation of Doppler spectrum modes may provide the desired windshear hazard information without the need of any preliminary processing requirement such as clutter filtering. The results obtained by processing a NASA simulation model output support consideration of mode identification as one component of a windshear detection algorithm.
