Book excerpt: Wave induced harbor oscillations were studied. Of primary interest are the response characteristics of a coupled system consisting of a small rectangular harbor connected to a larger rectangular wave basin. This simple model system, devoid of any form of artificial energy dissipators, was studied theoretically and experiment-ALLY TO DETERMINE WITH WHAT DEGREE OF ACCURACY THE ARRANGEMENT COULD PREDICT THE RESONANT MODES OF OSCILLATION FOR A SIMILAR HARBOR CONNECTED TO THE OPEN-SEA. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to investigate the wave induced oscillations in an arbitrary shaped harbor with constant depth which is connected to the open-sea. A theory termed the 'arbitrary shaped harbor' theory is developed. The solution of the Helmholtz equation is formulated as an integral equation; an approximate method is employed to solve the integral equation by converting it to a matrix equation. The final solution is obtained by equating, at the harbor entrance, the wave amplitude and its normal derivative obtained from the solutions for the regions outside and inside the harbor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hybrid finite element numerical model was used to calculate harbor resonance for existing conditions and proposed improvements of Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors. The numerical model calculates harbor oscillation for harbors of arbitrary shape and variable depth. Ten finite element numerical grids were used to calculate the response of the harbors complex for incident waves with periods from 1 to 10 min. Calculations of the model for existing conditions of the harbors were shown to be in good agreement with prototype measurements. The numerical model calculations indicate that resonant oscillations in existing harbor facilities will not be greatly altered by the proposed modifications of the harbors complex. The largest oscillation in the proposed LNG slip and general cargo terminal created by the Terminal Island landfill occurred at a wave period of 258 sec. The seaward side of the Terminal Island landfill did not exhibit significant resonant oscillations for incident waves with periods from 1 to 10 min. (Author).

This book was released on 2005-07-26 with total page 1135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an expanded version of The Applied Dynamics of Ocean Surface Waves. It presents theoretical topics on ocean wave dynamics, including basic principles and applications in coastal and offshore engineering as well as coastal oceanography. Advanced analytical and numerical techniques are applied, such as singular perturbations. In this expanded version, three chapters on recent developments have been added. The first is on multiple scattering by periodic or random bathymetry. The second is on Zakharov's theory of nonlinear wave fields with broad spectra. The third is an extensive discussion of powerful numerical techniques for highly nonlinear waves. Other new topics include infragravity waves, upstream solitons, Venice storm gates, etc. In addition, there are many new exercises.Theory and Applications of Ocean Surface Waves will be invaluable for graduate students and researchers in coastal and ocean engineering, geophysical fluid dynamicists interested in water waves, and theoretical scientists and applied mathematicians wishing to develop new techniques for challenging problems or to apply techniques existing elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite their variety, the vibration phenomena from many different engineering fields can be classified into a relatively few basic excitation mechanisms. The classification enables engineers to identify all possible sources of excitation in a given system and to assess potential dangers. This graduate-level text presents a synthesis of research results and practical experience from disparate fields in the form of engineering guidelines. It is particularly geared toward assessing the possible sources of excitation in a flow system, in identifying the actual danger spots, and in finding appropriate remedial measures or cures. Flow-induced vibrations are presented in terms of their basic elements: body oscillators, fluid oscillators, and sources of excitation. By stressing these basic elements, the authors provide a basis for the transfer of knowledge from one system to another, as well as from one engineering field to another. In this manner, well-known theories on cylinders in cross-flow or well-executed solutions from the field of wind engineering--to name just two examples--may be useful in other systems or fields on which information is scarce. The unified approach is broad enough to permit treatment of the major excitation mechanism, yet simple enough to be of practical use.
