Book Wave Induced Oscillations in Harbors

Download or read book Wave Induced Oscillations in Harbors written by Arthur T. Ippen and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave induced harbor oscillations were studied. Of primary interest are the response characteristics of a coupled system consisting of a small rectangular harbor connected to a larger rectangular wave basin. This simple model system, devoid of any form of artificial energy dissipators, was studied theoretically and experiment-ALLY TO DETERMINE WITH WHAT DEGREE OF ACCURACY THE ARRANGEMENT COULD PREDICT THE RESONANT MODES OF OSCILLATION FOR A SIMILAR HARBOR CONNECTED TO THE OPEN-SEA. Book Wave Induced Oscillations in Harbors of Arbitrary Shape

Download or read book Wave Induced Oscillations in Harbors of Arbitrary Shape written by Jiin-Jen Lee and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and experimental studies were conducted to investigate the wave induced oscillations in an arbitrary shaped harbor with constant depth which is connected to the open-sea. A theory termed the 'arbitrary shaped harbor' theory is developed. The solution of the Helmholtz equation is formulated as an integral equation; an approximate method is employed to solve the integral equation by converting it to a matrix equation. The final solution is obtained by equating, at the harbor entrance, the wave amplitude and its normal derivative obtained from the solutions for the regions outside and inside the harbor.

Book Wave Induced Oscillations in Harbors

Download or read book Wave Induced Oscillations in Harbors written by Arthur T. Ippen and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study presents a means of computing the response of a rectangular harbor to excitation by incident waves. With the aid of a digital computer, the complete response curve can be computed for any rectangular harbor. The results of experiments on model harbors have confirmed the validity of the computation. Experimental response curves, however, do not show the marked increase of the amplification factor at resonance with a narrowing of the harbor entrance, because of energy dissipation in a model harbor. The analysis of the response factor for waves with a continuous power spectrum also suggests that a narrowing of the entrance will lead to a reduction in the amplitude of long period oscillations in actual harbors, because of increasing sharpness of the response curves and the presence of energy dissipation mechanisms in harbors. In addition to the above resonant characteristics, a study was conducted on the minimum effectiveness of wave absorbers and filters to simulate the open-sea conditions in a wave basin of finite dimensions. A reflection coefficient less than 0.2 is recommended for wave absorbers and filters. The importance of the basin size is also discussed. (Author).

Book Numerical Modeling of Resonant Oscillations in Deep Draft Harbors

Download or read book Numerical Modeling of Resonant Oscillations in Deep Draft Harbors written by James Robert Houston and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "An investigation was undertaken to evaluate numerical models that can be used to predict harbor response to long-period wave excitation for both conventional harbors with deep drafts and artificial offshore ports in deep water. Numerical models using finite difference, hybrid finite element, and Lee's method solutions are discussed and compared with analytical solutions, hydraulic model data, and prototype field data. The hybrid finite element method of solution is shown to adequately predict periods of resonant peaks and modal water-surface elevation patterns in conventional and offshore harbors. Computational time requirements of this numerical model are shown to be sufficiciently low to make resonant response calculations economically feasible for a wide range of incident wave periods. Use of the hybrid finite element method to evaluate deep draft harbor design or modification and to aid hydraulic model studies of harbor oscillations is discussed."

Book Los Angeles Harbor Numerical Analysis of Harbor Oscillations

Download or read book Los Angeles Harbor Numerical Analysis of Harbor Oscillations written by James R. Houston and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hybrid finite element numerical model was used to calculate harbor resonance for existing conditions and proposed improvements of Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors. The numerical model calculates harbor oscillation for harbors of arbitrary shape and variable depth. Ten finite element numerical grids were used to calculate the response of the harbors complex for incident waves with periods from 1 to 10 min. Calculations of the model for existing conditions of the harbors were shown to be in good agreement with prototype measurements. The numerical model calculations indicate that resonant oscillations in existing harbor facilities will not be greatly altered by the proposed modifications of the harbors complex. The largest oscillation in the proposed LNG slip and general cargo terminal created by the Terminal Island landfill occurred at a wave period of 258 sec. The seaward side of the Terminal Island landfill did not exhibit significant resonant oscillations for incident waves with periods from 1 to 10 min. (Author).

Book Motions of Small Boats Moored in Standing Waves

Download or read book Motions of Small Boats Moored in Standing Waves written by Fredric Raichlen and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to determine the dynamic characteristics of small boats moored with non-linear-elastic lines in an asymmetrical manner. The motions being considered are surge motions where the moored boat is allowed to move either in the direction of the bow or the stern, but not in other coordinate directions. An analytical model is proposed where the small boat is simulated by a block-body which is moored asymmetrically to a fixed dock. A method is developed from which the nonlinear restoring forces and the dynamic response of the boat in surge can be obtained. (Author Modified Abstract).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: estimate tsunami potential by computing seismic moment. This system holds promise for a new generation of local tsunami warning systems. Shuto (Japan) described his conversion of !ida's definition of tsunami magnitude to local tsunami efforts. For example, i l = 2 would equal 4 m local wave height, which would destroy wooden houses and damage most fishing boats. SimOes (Portugal) reported on a seamount-based seismic system that was located in the tsunami source area for Portugal. In summary, the risk of tsunami hazard appears to be more widespread than the Pacific Ocean Basin. It appears that underwater slumps are an important component in tsunami generation. Finally, new technologies are emerging that would be used in a new generation of tsunami warning systems. These are exciting times for tsunami researchers. The simple wave model developed for comparison with the data is also consistent with an important qualitative feature of the sea floor displacement pattern which is predicted by a seismic fault plane deformation model, i. e. the existence of a western-subsidence/eastern-uplift dipole.
