Book Horizontal Forces Due to Waves Acting on Large Vertical Cylinders in Deep Water

Download or read book Horizontal Forces Due to Waves Acting on Large Vertical Cylinders in Deep Water written by E. R. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special case of horizontal wave forces on large vertical cylinders in deep water is considered. The typical application for such a case is the calculation of horizontal forces on column-stabilized floating ocean platforms. Existing literature discussing horizontal wave forces on cylinders does not generally agree on how to predict these forces. Since for large-diameter cylinders in deep water the maximum force is completely inertial, the problem of deriving a solution is considerably simplified. In this study, an expression for the maximum horizontal wave force on large-diameter circular cylinders mounted vertically in deep water has been analytically derived. Experimental model studies were also conducted and the resulting measured forces are compared to predicted forces. An example of how to predict horizontal wave forces using the methods of the report is given. (Author).

Book Hydrodynamic Forces on a Horizontal Cylinder Under Waves and Current

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Forces on a Horizontal Cylinder Under Waves and Current written by Chung-Chu Teng and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By assuming the linear superposition principle to be valid, the hydrodynamic forces on a horizontal cylinder under waves and current are examined. In this study, towing a cylinder in waves is used to simulate a cylinder under waves and current. The experimental technique is proved valid through theoretical considerations and experimental investigations. For large current velocity (or high tow speed), the drag coefficient for waves and current approaches that for steady flow. If the current is large enough, these two values are nearly identical. In addition, the behavior of force coefficients for a horizontal cylinder in waves only with moderately large Reynolds number, Keulegan-Carpenter number and frequency parameter is examined. The results show that the forces on a horizontal cylinder in waves are smaller than those for planar oscillatory flow. Whether the total acceleration or local acceleration should be used in the inertia term is a debatable point for using the Morison equation. To study this problem, the similarities and differences between these two accelerations for different water depths and wave heights are examined. The results show there is no evident difference in force prediction if the related force coefficients are used. To check the suitability of this data for determining Cd and/or Cm, an indicator, RR, is developed for the horizontal smooth cylinder in waves and current.

Book Simultaneous Wave and Current Forces on a Cylinder Near the Bottom Boundary

Download or read book Simultaneous Wave and Current Forces on a Cylinder Near the Bottom Boundary written by David Alex Knoll and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of waves and currents and their relationship to the forces on submerged pipelines was investigated at Texas A&M University. A model pipeline in a wave-current test facility is used to obtain experimental force values which are compared to values predicted by various theoretical methods of representing wave propagation in a current. The Morison equation is employed to evaluate the forces on the horizontal cylinder. The major input parameters required by this equation are the water particle kinematics of velocity and acceleration and the coefficients of drag and inertia. Each of these parameters is investigated individually in order to ensure that compensating errors in the force calculations are eliminated. The coefficient of drag is determined from the simultaneous measurements of the horizontal water particle kinematics and the fluid force on the cylinder. Several wave theories for waves propagating in still water are modified to include currents by various combinations of their respective horizontal velocity fields. These water particle kinematics are compared directly to experimentally determined values. The measured forces are compared to the forces obtained by the Morison equation with the coefficients determined in this study and the kinematics predicted by the modified wave theories. The data are also compared to previous results for the individual cases of waves or currents. These comparisons demonstrate the changes of the coefficients of drag for the combined wave and current conditions. The primary purpose of this paper is not to provide explicit prototype design criteria, but to provide the design engineer with an insight into the fluid force parameters of interacting waves and currents. The results are presented in a manner that demonstrates the apparent acceptability of superimposing the velocity fields of the wave and current to predict the total velocity field for the determination of the fluid force by the Morison equation.

Book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures

Download or read book Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures written by Jorgen Fredsoe and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-03-17 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.

Book Wave Forces on a Submerged Horizontal Cylinder

Download or read book Wave Forces on a Submerged Horizontal Cylinder written by Frederick Conrad Schiller and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oscillatory forces generated by the interaction of a train of gravity waves with a rigid horizontal circular cylinder located near a simulated ocean floor were determined experimentally. A circular cylinder of six inch diameter was subjected to gravity waves of wave lengths varying from 2 to 18 feet in a two-dimensional wave channel. Both the horizontal and vertical components of the hydrodynamic force were measured. Experimental results are plotted in dimensionless form. The horizontal and vertical dimensionless force coefficients are plotted as a function of the relative water depth, the relative wave length, and the relative wave height. (Author).

Book Wave Force Phase Method for Vertical Cylinders

Download or read book Wave Force Phase Method for Vertical Cylinders written by John H. Nath and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The maximum force and its phase is determined for laboratory wave forces on smooth vertical cylinders. The maximum force coefficient, and the normalized phase angle, of the force with respect to the wave particle velocity, can be related to the force transfer coefficients, C subscript d and c subscript m, for the Morison equation. This method enables the data to be plotted in a way that immediately shows the drag or inertia dependency for the wave/cylinder conditions. In addition, the C subscript d and C subscript m so derived are more likely to properly predict the maximum value of the force, although they may also increase the rms error between the measured force and the predicted force in the time domain.
