Book Wave Forces on Circular Cylindrical Piles Used in Coastal Structures

Download or read book Wave Forces on Circular Cylindrical Piles Used in Coastal Structures written by Yüan Jen and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory studies were made on a 6-inch diameter circular pile, using both regular and irregular waves. Detailed force analyses were made of both sets of data. Harmonic analyses of the total horizontal force acting on a pile was made in order to examine carefully the mass coefficient and drag coefficient. An attempt was made to relate these coefficients to certain dimensionless parameters. Dimensional analysis showed that the coefficients depended not only upon Reynolds number, Froude number, and Iversen's modulus, but also upon the water depth-wave length ratio d/L and the time parameter t/T. Book Single Piles and Pile Groups Under Lateral Loading

Download or read book Single Piles and Pile Groups Under Lateral Loading written by Lymon C. Reese and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complexities of designing piles for lateral loads are manifold as there are many forces that are critical to the design of big structures such as bridges, offshore and waterfront structures and retaining walls. The loads on structures should be supported either horizontally or laterally or in both directions and most structures have in common t

Book Horizontal Forces Due to Waves Acting on Large Vertical Cylinders in Deep Water

Download or read book Horizontal Forces Due to Waves Acting on Large Vertical Cylinders in Deep Water written by E. R. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The special case of horizontal wave forces on large vertical cylinders in deep water is considered. The typical application for such a case is the calculation of horizontal forces on column-stabilized floating ocean platforms. Existing literature discussing horizontal wave forces on cylinders does not generally agree on how to predict these forces. Since for large-diameter cylinders in deep water the maximum force is completely inertial, the problem of deriving a solution is considerably simplified. In this study, an expression for the maximum horizontal wave force on large-diameter circular cylinders mounted vertically in deep water has been analytically derived. Experimental model studies were also conducted and the resulting measured forces are compared to predicted forces. An example of how to predict horizontal wave forces using the methods of the report is given. (Author).

Book Jetties and Wharfs

Download or read book Jetties and Wharfs written by Crow and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-04-04 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, jetties and wharfs have been designed and built around the world and play an important role in contemporary ports. The difference in the use of jetties, piers and wharfs is that jetties are frequently used for the transhipment and storage of light materials and ro-ro traffic, while piers are generally used for heavy loads like iron ore. That is why piers are mostly designed and constructed like quay walls (which are beyond the scope of this handbook). The designs were originally based on trial and error and the insights of those who dared to conquer local conditions, such as wind, waves, currents and soil composition. Design and construction techniques have since evolved into the designs we see on the coast or in river ports and seaports nowadays. The purpose of this handbook is to provide insight and guidelines regarding aspects that are important in the design of jetties and wharfs. Jetty-specific issues such as loads, interfaces between materials, installations on jetties and wharfs, as well as detailing aspects, are also covered. This handbook is part of a series of Dutch port infrastructure design recommendations that include the Quay Walls handbook and Jetties and Wharfs handbook.

Book Correlation of Water Level Variations with Wave Forces on a Vertical Pile for Non periodic Waves

Download or read book Correlation of Water Level Variations with Wave Forces on a Vertical Pile for Non periodic Waves written by B. J. Muga and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filter techniques employing Fourier transforms as evolved by Reid (Proc. of 6th Conf. on Coastal Engineering, 1958) are used to study measurements of hurricane generated waves and forces induced thereby on ver ical circular piles 2, 3, and 4 feet in diameter. The piles were fixed to an oil well drilling platform located in about 30 feet of water in the open Gulf of Mexico approximately 100 air miles south of New Orleans, La. It is concluded that the ''filter'' technique while possibly not suitable for design seems useful for analysis of measurements but that results obtained thereby cannot be compared rigorously with those from ''bump-counting'' techniques since their premises differ in that the former considers a ''train'' of ''waves'' while the latter considers a ''wave'' (bump) in a ''train.'' Comparison of the ''filter'' and ''bump-counting'' techniques, through a medium more sophisticated than that of the results yielded by each technique operating on a limited amount of data, is beyond the scope of this task. Book Waves and Their Effects on Pile supported Structures

Download or read book Waves and Their Effects on Pile supported Structures written by Robert L. Wiegel and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three methods of presenting wave data are discussed: the significant wave (including the 'design wave' concept), the wave spectrum, and the directional spectra. Their use in calculating wave forces on pile supported structures is described, with a discussion of the relative usefulness of the linear versus the non-linear approach. The concept of virtual mass is described, and how this leads to a type of non-linearity which is of great importance in the reversing flow field associated with wave motions. Finally, a plea is made for more wave data in order that adequate wave climates can be obtained for use by the design engineer, by the constructor, and by the operator. (Author).
