Book excerpt: An expression is derived for the damping of translation waves by screen filters in terms of filter extent and length of wave. Derivation involves the resistance coefficient of screens; and tests show that this term cannot be derived from the known resistance law of circular cylinders but must be determined for a particular screen for the condition of steady flow. Observed damping and computed damping agree fairly well. Results are extended intuitively to the case of surface waves. The analysis is compared with the Goda-Ippen theory of screen filters to establish the conditions for the equivalency of results in these two approaches. (Author).

Book excerpt: Expressions are derived for the damping of essentially translatory waves by screens prepared from fibrous materials such as aluminum wool, rubberized hair, and polyurethane foam. The derivations involve either the resistance coefficients or the permeabilities of these materials and these are individually determined. It is found that with the aluminum wool the damping is exponential and yields expressions admitting logarithmic decrements. A comparison is made with the Biesel theory of decay in porous media. With the foams the damping is also exponential; on the other hand, with the rubberized hair the damping is best described in terms of a power formula. (Author).

The activities in the field include the study of wave dynamics, shoreline erosion and protection, harbor and breakwater design, dredging technology, estuary mechanics and storm surge calculations, as well as offshore structural design. In all of these areas the level of actvity is high and the state of art has imporved dramatically since the 1940's. An important aspect of all these areas of research is the use of model studies. This volume consists of a number of papers which cover various aspects of physical modelling in coastal engineering, including the generation of waves in the laboratory, the modelling of sediment transport and the application to various engineering problems. The intent is to provide the reader with an overview of the research actvities of indviduals who represent major laboratories in their countries: to include Denmark, Scotland, Canada, the People's Republic of China, England, the Netherlands and the U.S.
