Download or read book Southern Waters written by Craig E. Colten and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2014-10-13 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water has dominated images of the South throughout history, from Hernando de Soto's 1541 crossing of the Mississippi to tragic scenes of flooding throughout the Gulf South after Hurricane Katrina. But these images tell only half the story: as urban, industrial, and population growth create unprecedented demands on water in the South, the problems of pollution and water shortages grow ever more urgent. In Southern Waters: The Limits to Abundance, Craig E. Colten addresses how the South -- in an environment fraught with uncertainty -- can navigate the twin risks of too much water and not enough. From the arrival of the first European settlers, the South's inhabitants have pursued a course of maximum exploitation and control of the area's plentiful waters, investing widely in wetland drainage and massive flood-control projects. Disputes over southern waterways go back nearly as far: obstruction of fish migration by mill dams prompted new policies to protect aquatic life as early as the colonial era. Colten argues that such conflicts, which have heightened dramatically since the explosive urbanization of the mid-twentieth century, will only become more frequent and intense, making the shift toward sustainable use a national imperative. In tracing the evolving uses and abuses of southern waters, Colten offers crucial insights into the complex historical geography of water throughout the region. A masterful analysis of the ways in which past generations harnessed and consumed water, Southern Waters also stands as a guide to adapting our water usage to cope with the looming shortage of this once-abundant resource.

Book Rainfall Water Supply Waterways of the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rainfall Water Supply Waterways of the United States Classic Reprint written by Henry Wayland Hill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rainfall, Water Supply, Waterways of the United States When water is made to flow through a layer of sodium permutit, the latter exchanges its soda for the calcium and magnesium salts of the water and the degree of hardness in the latter is reduced to zero. The permutit has to be regenerated as it grows lax in action. This is easily accomplished by washing it for a few hours with a solution of common salt. Man ganese permutit in connection with marble dust removes all iron and acids from waters thus affected. The practice of softening the entire water supply of a municipality has grown steadily and in not a few large manufacturing cities the municipal softening plant is saving the citi zens hundreds of thousands of tons of coal per annum and adding years of life to the community's boilers. The principal require ments are (1) mixing chambers, in which the softening chemicals are thoroughly mixed with the water; (2) capacious settling basins suffi cient to give the necessary time for the slower reactions when the temperature is low, as in winter; (3) a device for adding a coagulant (alum or ferrous sulphate) at both the en trance port and the exit port of the water into and from the settling basins, (4) substantial mechanical filters. In addition, as one of the requisites should be a special apparatus to slake the lime, reduce it to a proper emulsion and feed it in proper quantity automatically into the flowing water. At the municipal water softening plant at Cleveland, Ohio, 000 gallons of water per day require the daily application of 40 tons of quicklime. This is slaked with hot water, mixed into an emulsion in an agitator, taken to tanks where it is cooled and diluted to the proper consistency and finally pumped at a uniform rate into the flowing water.
