Book Design of Contemporary Inland Waterway Vessels

Download or read book Design of Contemporary Inland Waterway Vessels written by Dejan Radojčić and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inland Waterway (IW), or river vessels are in every respect different from the seagoing ships. The professional literature is mostly focused on conventional seagoing fleets, leaving a gap in the documentation of design practices for IW vessels. The principal attribute that differentiates river vessels from the seagoing ships is the low, or shallow, draught due to water depth restrictions. This book addresses key aspects for the design of contemporary, shallow draught IW vessels for the transport of dry cargo (containers and bulk cargo). Most of the logic that is presented is applicable to the design of river vessels for any river, but the material that is presented is focused on vessels for the River Danube and its tributaries. The term ‘contemporary river vessel’ assumes that the present-day technology and current Danube river infrastructure are taken into consideration in its design. It is believed that the technologies and concepts that are proposed here are applicable for all new vessel designs for the next 10 to 15 years. Other innovative technologies should be considered for designs beyond that horizon. Moreover, nowadays contemporary IW vessel must be in harmony with the Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) policies and hence special attention is paid to both ecology and efficiency. Note however that shipowners and ship operators usually tend to choose the conventional cost-effective transport technologies. Given that potential divergence of interests, the concepts and technologies treated here may be regarded as innovative.

Book Shiphandling Simulation

Download or read book Shiphandling Simulation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of major shipping disasters on all coasts, the safety of vessel operations in U.S. ports and waterways and the effectiveness of waterway designs are under increased scrutiny. But are traditional waterway design practices that rely heavily on rules of thumb and conservatism providing adequate margins of safety while keeping the overall costs of waterway projects within the funding capabilities of local project sponsors? Shiphandling Simulation addresses how computer-based simulation can be used to improve the cost- effectiveness of waterway design while satisfying safety objectives. The book examines the role of computer simulation in improving waterway design, evaluates the adequacy of data input, explores the validity of hydrodynamic and mathematical models, assesses required and achievable accuracy of simulation results, and identifies research needed to establish shiphandling simulation as a standard design aid. Case studies of waterway design efforts employing shiphandling simulation are analyzed and lessons learned are identified.

Download or read book Drainage Design written by P. Smart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a review of the principles and methods of drainage with an emphasis on design. The whole field of drainage is covered, and although the book concentrates mainly on the practice in North America, Europe and Britain, the practice in developing countries is also included. The book is directed primarily at the graduate engineer entering professional practice, but will also provide a useful reference for more senior engineers and for those in adjunct professions. Chapter 1 outlines the necessity for drainage on a large or small scale, for rural and urban areas. As the drainage engineer must decide how much unwanted water there will be and when it will occur, the chapter discusses climatic types, prediction of rainfall, evapotranspiration effects, return periods (of design storms and runoff events), river flow and flood prediction, and various sensing systems for providing short term predictions of rainfall, runoff, streamflow and flood warning. Chapter 2 gives a thorough review of the properties of soil in the context of drainage design. The extensive mathematical theories which relate to the crucial area of soil water movement are outlined and due attention is paid to the growing importance of predicting soil water movement in partially saturated soils.

Book Ecologically Aware Design of Waterway Encapsulating Structures

Download or read book Ecologically Aware Design of Waterway Encapsulating Structures written by Dennis Lyn and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquatic organism passage (AOP) in waterways-encapsulating structures, particularly culverts, is of growing concern to environmental regulatory agencies, and the Indiana Dept. of Transportation (INDOT) is seeking systematic responses to this concern in the hydraulic design of such structures. This study reviews design approaches to enhance or accommodate aquatic organism passage through culverts, and proposes a simplified design procedure that requires less data input and analysis, and yet results in a structure complying with the current regional general permit (RGP) conditions. It also makes as much use of already existing INDOT standard specifications for riprap and coarse aggregates that would be as backfill material to form a stable bed within the culvert. The simplified procedure is intended for new larger structures for which a culvert bed needs to be installed, and for expected Indiana conditions of low-gradient (

Sediment transport mechanics and moveable boundaries in channels are introduced. Finally, a brief treatment of the St. Venant equations and Navier-Stokes equations are introduced as topics to be explored in more advanced courses. The central goal is to prepare students for work in engineering offices where they will be involved with aspects of land development and related consulting work. Students will also be prepared for advanced courses that will involve computational fluid dynamics approaches for solving 2-d and 3-d problems in advanced graduate level courses. Offering a fresh approach, Open Channel Design: Fundamentals and Applications prepares students for work in engineering offices where they will be involved with aspects of land development and related consulting work. It also introduces the reader to software packages including Mathematica, HecRas and HY8, all widely used in professional settings.
