Book Application of the Systems Approach to the Management of Complex Water Systems

Download or read book Application of the Systems Approach to the Management of Complex Water Systems written by Slobodan P. Simonovic and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past five decades, we have witnessed a tremendous evolution in water resource system management. Three characteristics of this evolution are of particular note: First, the application of the systems approach to complex water management problems has been established as one of the most important advances in the field of water resource management. Second, the past five decades have brought a remarkable transformation of attitude in the water resource management community towards environmental concerns and action to address these concerns. Third, applying the principles of sustainability to water resource decision-making requires major changes in the objectives on which decisions are based, and an understanding of the complicated inter-relationships between existing ecological, economic, and social factors. The Special Issue includes 15 contributions that offer insights into contemporary problems, approaches, and issues related to the management of complex water resources systems. It will be presumptuous to say that these 15 contributions characterize the success or failure of the systems approach to support water resources decision-making. However, these contributions offer interesting lessons from current experiences and highlight possible future work.

  • Publisher : IWA Publishing
  • Release : 2017-12-15
  • ISBN : 1780409362
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book Water Risk Hotspots for Agriculture written by Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is expected to face increasing water risks that will impact production, markets, trade and food security - risks that can be mitigated with targeted policy actions on water hotspots. This report develops the hotspot approach, provides an application at the global scale, and presents a mitigation policy action plan. The People’s Republic of China, India and the United States are identified as countries facing the greatest water risks for agriculture production globally. A global simulation shows that, in the absence of action, water risks in Northeast China, Northwest India and the Southwest United States in particular could have significant production, price and trade consequences. Agriculture water risks could also result in broader socio-economic and food security concerns. Farmers, agro food companies, and governments can all play a role in responding to water risks at hotspot locations. A three-tier policy action plan is proposed to confront water risk hotspots, encompassing targeted responses, adapted national policies, strengthened market integration and international collaboration.

Book Water Policy in Mexico

Download or read book Water Policy in Mexico written by Hilda R. Guerrero García Rojas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mexico is currently facing severe problems with water availability, wastage and contamination. The most contaminated and over-exploited water resources are concentrated in the most populated areas of the country, where water is scarcer and its quality makes it unsuitable for a variety of uses, including human consumption. At the same time it is indisputable that water quality is a determining factor in public health and ecosystems. The significant growth in population and industry results in a high demand for water, along with contaminating discharges, few of which are treated – and the impact upon the ecosystems is evident. This book addresses all these topics in a single volume, taking into account the challenges presented by the economic, institutional and environmental considerations in Mexico’s water policy framework.
