Book Watershed Based Wetland Characterization for Delaware S Nanticoke River Watershed

Download or read book Watershed Based Wetland Characterization for Delaware S Nanticoke River Watershed written by U.s. Fish and Wildlife Service and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-02-14 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today there is great interest in managing wetland resources from a watershed standpoint or landscape perspective. Wetland managers need information on a variety of topics including the location and type of existing wetlands, wetland functions, potential wetland restoration sites, and the overall condition of natural habitat in the watershed. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wetlands Inventory Program has developed products that expand the use of its conventional maps and digital products to aid in resource management. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is attempting to reduce nonpoint source pollution impacts in the Nanticoke watershed and wanted the above information for the Delaware portion of the Nanticoke River watershed. This information would be used to help improve water quality and management and conservation of fish and wildlife habitat in wetlands, streams, riparian areas, and uplands in Delaware. Similar work has recently been completed for the Maryland portion of the watershed (Tiner et al. 2000). In the future, both efforts may be combined into a single report.

This book was released on 2015-02-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The states of Delaware and Maryland are cooperating to investigate and evaluate wetlands of the Nanticoke River watershed. They are collecting data on reference wetlands to gain information on wetland functions and levels of performance for evaluating impacts to presentday wetlands and to develop a watershed-based strategy for wetland conservation and restoration. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is assisting the states in several ways. Roughly two years ago, the states provided funds to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to expand the current National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) digital data to include hydrogeomorphic-type descriptors (i.e., landscape position, landform, and water flow path) to all mapped wetlands and to use these data to produce a preliminary assessment of wetland functions for the watershed. The results of this analysis were published in two watershed-based reports on the Nanticoke wetlands, one for Maryland and the other for Delaware (Tiner et al. 2000, 2001).

Book Wetland Habitats of North America

Download or read book Wetland Habitats of North America written by Darold P. Batzer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wetland Habitats of North America is essential reading for everyone who studies, manages, or visits North American wetlands. It fills an important void in the wetland literature, providing accessible and succinct descriptions of all of the continent’s major wetland types.” Arnold van der Valk, Iowa State University “Batzer and Baldwin have compiled the most comprehensive compendium of North American wetland habitats and their ecology that is presently available—a must for wetland scientists and managers.” Irving A. Mendelssohn, Louisiana State University "If you want to gain a broad understanding of the ecology of North America’s diverse wetlands, Wetland Habitats of North America is the book for you. Darold Batzer and Andrew Baldwin have assembled an impressive group of regional wetland scientists who have produced a virtual encyclopedia to the continent’s wetlands. Reading the book is like a road trip across the Americas with guided tours of major wetland types by local experts. Your first stop will be to coastal wetlands with eight chapters covering tidal wetlands along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts. Then you’ll travel inland where you can visit any or all of 18 types ranging from bottomland swamps of the Southeast to pothole marshes of the Northern Prairies to montane wetlands of the Rockies to tropical swamps of Central America and desert springs wetlands. All in one book—I’m impressed! Every wetlander should add this book to her or his swampland library. Ralph Tiner, University of Massachusetts–Amherst

Book Utilizing Wetland Analysis and Detailed Elevation Surveys to Evaluate Spatial Patterns of Sedimentation and Potential Marsh Sustainability in Delaware s Tidal and Impounded Wetlands

Download or read book Utilizing Wetland Analysis and Detailed Elevation Surveys to Evaluate Spatial Patterns of Sedimentation and Potential Marsh Sustainability in Delaware s Tidal and Impounded Wetlands written by Bartholomew Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to provide better understanding of the processes that control the evolution of natural tidal and impounded wetlands. The evaluation of coastal resources is necessary for conservation and management efforts, especially as sea-level rise and anthropogenic alteration impact tidal wetlands. ☐ This research project consists of three separate studies in the vicinity of the Delaware River and Bay coastline within the Delaware Estuary. They include: • The determination of the optimal (“Goldilocks”) vertical growth range and above-ground and below-ground biomass production of Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) with respect to mean low water (MLW) and mean high water (MHW) tidal datums within six watersheds (Blackbird Creek, Bombay Hook Complex, St. Jones River, Murderkill, River, Prime Hook Creek, and Broadkill River). In these watersheds, S. alterniflora has an optimal growth range between -0.07 and 0.18 m relative to MHW elevation and between 1.25 and 1.72 m, relative to MLW. The results can be used to assess the ability of a marsh to combat changing conditions associated with sea-level rise, by determining whether or not the marsh platform is within the optimal growth range of S. alterniflora. This assessment method can be used to determine whether a tidal wetland area is in need of restoration for longer-term sustainability, through the optimization of below-ground biomass production. • An assessment of water level management actions on accretion rates and wetland platform elevations of impoundment marshes using neighboring un-impounded tidal wetlands as reference sites. Nine impoundments (three in northern Delaware (in the vicinity of New Castle, Delaware), four in Central Delaware Bay, and two in lower Delaware Bay) and four reference tidal wetlands (two in Northern Delaware, one in Central Delaware Bay, and one in the lower Delaware Bay) were studied. Regular tidal inundation is vital in the development and evolution of natural marsh platforms. The study results show that only three of the nine impoundments having statistically significant differences (at the p
