Book excerpt: Excerpt from Waterproofing Engineering for Engineers, Architects, Builders, Roofers and Waterproofers Waterproofing engineering is not taught in any college, and the writers of engineering papers descriptive of engineering works only rarely embody information on waterproofing. In general, this branch of engineering is given far too little consideration and study in the laboratory and in construction. Its importance warrants a better acquaintance with its laws than exists among those most vitally interested. To remedy this condition and seemingly to supply a real need to the profession, I commenced, early in 1914, a systematic search and diligent study of existing literature on the subject of waterproofing. The field was large but the harvest surprisingly small. Secrecy is the keynote in nearly all commercial literature on waterproofing; but with the aid of chemistry much of this was dispelled. The technical literature is often but semi-illuminating, though some excellent papers and reports have been read before various engineering societies. In fact, the impression gained from perusing the literature extant on waterproofing was, that the subject seemed to be regarded as a sort of necessary evil in engineering, to be overcome as best as the exigency of the case would permit, and if this failed to try again and again until successful. The cost of waterproofing was often the last consideration, but it invariably became the least in the mad effort to successfully waterproof the more important structures. This attitude is fundamentally and morally wrong and economically unsound, because we may find it expedient to justify our ignorance, but never profitable. In writing this book it is believed that my extensive practical experience and experimental research work in waterproofing engineering has qualified me to undertake this task, the magnitude of which has not been underestimated. Much thought and labor were devoted to the task of compiling and simplifying the text so as to make it understandable by all interested in the subject of waterproofing, which interest, fortunately, is gradually increasing among engineers, architects and contractors. Book Structural Waterproofing

Download or read book Structural Waterproofing written by Truscon Laboratories and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Structural Waterproofing: A Waterproofing Handbook and Reference Guide for the Use of Architects, Engineers, Building Contractors and Others Interested in the General Subjects of Waterproofing and Dampproofing His is the era of concrete construction. For a number of years past the use of concrete as a building material has been grow ing by leaps and bounds. It is most natural that this should be the case. Concrete is the most ideal building material known. It is durable and fireproof. It provides rapidity in construction and economy in labor. It has, in fact, few limitations. Its natural absorbent property, however, had a tendency to limit its use in certain directions. There seemed to be no reason, though, why this difficulty could not be overcome and the use of concrete further extended, by eliminating this absorbent characteristic. It seemed logical that the intro duction of some element into the concrete during the process of mixing, would accomplish this purpose and add to the other splendid qualities of concrete, the highest degree of impermeability. As later events demonstrated, this proved true, and it is when in a waterproofed state that concrete finds its highest and most complete expression. Out _of this idea itself, however, together with its subsequent development, has grown the science of integral waterproofing. But because of the comparative newness of integral waterproofing as a science, there has been little organized literature or data on the subject. The architect and engineer, faced with a condition where waterproofing seemed necessary, or desiring to extend his use of concrete by some effective system of waterproofing, has found difficulty in knowing where to turn for instruction or suggestion. In other words, the science of waterproofing has lacked a handbook to which the builder could turn as a reference guide. This Architectural and Engineering Edition of Structural Waterproofing is an endeavor to supply this deficiency and to place at the disposal of the architect and engineer, a thoroughly organized and complete handbook upon the entire subject of integral waterproofing. The theory underlying waterproofing, the nature of waterproofing compounds, a discussion of their chemical and physical characteristics and their practical use in mass concrete, cement plaster coat and stucco, are all fully dealt with in the various chapters of this book. We hope very sincerely that Structural Waterproofing will fulfill a much needed require ment in supplying full information upon the subject, to all persons who may be interested. Book Twentieth Century Building Materials

Download or read book Twentieth Century Building Materials written by Thomas C. Jester and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the concluding decades of the twentieth century, the historic preservation community increasingly turned its attention to modern buildings, including bungalows from the 1930s, gas stations and diners from the 1940s, and office buildings and architectural homes from the 1950s. Conservation efforts, however, were often hampered by a lack of technical information about the products used in these structures, and to fill this gap Twentieth-Century Building Materials was developed by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service and first published in 1995. Now, this invaluable guide is being reissued—with a new preface by the book’s original editor. With more than 250 illustrations, including a full-color photographic essay, the volume remains an indispensable reference on the history and conservation of modern building materials. Thirty-seven essays written by leading experts offer insights into the history, manufacturing processes, and uses of a wide range of materials, including glass block, aluminum, plywood, linoleum, and gypsum board. Readers will also learn about how these materials perform over time and discover valuable conservation and repair techniques. Bibliographies and sources for further research complete the volume. The book is intended for a wide range of conservation professionals including architects, engineers, conservators, and material scientists engaged in the conservation of modern buildings, as well as scholars in related disciplines.

This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moisture control is fundamental to the proper functioning of any building. Controlling moisture is important to protect occupants from adverse health effects and to protect the building, its mechanical systems and its contents from physical or chemical damage. Yet, moisture problems are so common in buildings, many people consider them inevitable. Excessive moisture accumulation plagues buildings throughout the United States, from tropical Hawaii to arctic Alaska and from the hot, humid Gulf Coast to the hot, dry Sonoran Desert. Between 1994 and 1998, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Building Assessment Survey and Evaluation (BASE) study collected information about the indoor air quality of 100 randomly selected public and private office buildings in the 10 U.S. climatic regions.

Book Building Adaptation

Download or read book Building Adaptation written by James Douglas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As existing buildings age, nearly half of all construction activity in Britain is related to maintenance, refurbishment and conversions. Building adaptation is an activity that continues to make a significant contribution to the workload of the construction industry. Given its importance to sustainable construction, the proportion of adaptation works in relation to new build is likely to remain substantial for the foreseeable future, especially in the developed parts of the world. Building Adaptation, Second Edition is intended as a primer on the physical changes that can affect older properties. It demonstrates the general principles, techniques, and processes needed when existing buildings must undergo alteration, conversion, extension, improvement, or refurbishment. The publication of the first edition of Building Adaptation reflected the upsurge in refurbishment work. The book quickly established itself as one of the core texts for building surveying students and others on undergraduate and postgraduate built environment courses. This new edition continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to all the key issues relating to the adaptation of buildings. It deals with any work to a building over and above maintenance to change its capacity, function or performance.
