Download or read book Women and Men written by Joseph McElroy and published by . This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in childbirth and entered like a multiple dwelling in motion, Women and Men embraces and anatomizes the 1970s in New York - from experiments in the chaotic relations between the sexes to the flux of the city itself. Yet through an intricate overlay of scenes, voices, fact, and myth, this expanding fiction finds its way also across continents and into earlier and future times and indeed the Earth, to reveal connections between the most disparate lives and systems of feeling and power. At its breathing heart, it plots the fuguelike and fieldlike densities of late-twentieth-century life. McElroy rests a global vision on two people, apartment-house neighbors who never quite meet. Except, that is, in the population of others whose histories cross theirs believers and skeptics; lovers, friends, and hermits; children, parents, grandparents, avatars, and, apparently, angels. For Women and Men shows how the families through which we pass let one person's experience belong to that of many, so that we throw light on each other as if these kinships were refracted lives so real as to be reincarnate. A mirror of manners, the book is also a meditation on the languages, rich, ludicrous, exact, and also American, in which we try to grasp the world we're in. Along the kindred axes of separation and intimacy Women and Men extends the great line of twentieth-century innovative fiction.

Book Facing Diversity in Child Foreign Language Education

Download or read book Facing Diversity in Child Foreign Language Education written by Joanna Rokita-Jaśkow and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book uses the concept of diversity in child foreign language education as a major organizing principle. Since a foreign language, most typically English, is taught globally to an increasing number of children, the variability in the process and varied learning outcomes are inescapable phenomena. This book has been constructed on the premise that heterogeneity, first, concerns young language learners, who due to the disparity in the pace of development need appropriately tailored educational solutions, and, second, it refers to a diversity of contexts in which learning takes place. The contexts can be defined on a macroscale (e.g. different countries), mesoscale (e.g. different institutions), and microscale (e.g. specific learner groups). The book consists of four thematic strands. In Part One the learner-internal causes of heterogeneity of young language learners are clarified. Part Two presents a sample of classroom studies in which learner variables, such as gender, learner preferences, and special needs are taken into account. Part Three looks at teaching materials and how they meet learners’ needs. Finally, Part Four highlights diversity issues that teachers should be prepared to face.

Book The Sheltering

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Powell
  • Publisher : Univ of South Carolina Press
  • Release : 2014-08-12
  • ISBN : 161117435X
  • Pages : 384 pages

Download or read book The Sheltering written by Mark Powell and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2014-08-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'You set yourself up as judge, jury, and executioner,' Pamela had said, but that was wrong: you set yourself up as angel, and await the word of God." Luther Redding lost his job, and almost lost his wife, Pamela, and teenaged daughters Katie and Lucy, when the real estate bubble burst in Florida. Now he pilots a Reaper drone over the mountains of Afghanistan from a command center in the bowels of Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base, studying a target's pattern of life and awaiting the command to end that life. Meanwhile Bobby Rosen has returned home from his tours in Iraq to a broken marriage and an estranged son, his promising military career cut short in a moment of terrible violence in a Sadr City marketplace. As the tales of Luther and Bobby unfold, Mark Powell masterfully engages with the vexing, bifurcated lives of combatants in the global war on terror, those who are simultaneously here and there and thus never fully freed from the life-and-death chaos of the battlefield. As Bobby sets off on a drug-fueled road trip with his brother Donny, newly released from prison and consumed by his own inescapable impulses, a sudden death in the Redding household sends Luther's daughter Katie spiraling into grief and self-destruction. Soon the lives of the Reddings and the Rosens intersect as the collateral damage from the war on terror sends these families into a rapid descent of violence and moral ambiguity that seems hauntingly familiar to Bobby while placing Katie in a position much like her father's—more removed witness than active participant in the bloody war unfolding in front of her. Overarching questions of faith and redemption clash with the rough-hewn realities of terror and loss, all to explosive ends in Powell's dark vision of modern Americana. Novelist Ron Rash has deemed Powell "the best Appalachian novelist of his generation." In this, his fourth novel, Powell broadens the southern backdrop of his earlier work into a sprawling thriller taking readers from the Middle East to Charleston, southern Georgia, Tampa, Miami, New Orleans, and into the storied American West. In its themes, perspectives, and pacing, The Sheltering recalls the work of Robert Stone, Jim Harrison, and Ben Fountain while further establishing Powell as a unique voice capable of interrogating unfathomable truths with a beauty and cohesion of language that challenges our assumptions of the human spirit.

Book Who Needs Magic

Book excerpt: The sequel to DON'T EXPECT MAGIC! Now that Delaney Collins knows she’s a fairy godmother, she’s ready to make magic happen. But first, she has to find her next client. And it’s not as easy as she thought it would be. Delaney’s spending the summer working at Treasures, a secondhand store at the mall, surrounded by cool vintage boots—and potential clients. But when she finally feels a connection with Jeni, a girl who needs a life-changing, happily-ever-after wish . . . Jeni doesn’t want her help. And to make matters worse, Delaney finds herself competing with another f.g. Glittery, sparkly Ariella is an uber-f.g., granting wishes with a flick of her lemon candy stick, while Delaney can’t seem to make anything happen. Not even a summer romance with her boyfriend, Flynn. It takes more than waving a chopstick to make big wishes come true. But what good is being an f.g. if you can’t make the boy you like want to be with you as much as you want to be with him? "A fun paranormal comedy."--Kirkus Reviews Praise for Don't Expect Magic: “A supernaturally touched rom-com, this is a bright, whimsical romp featuring a suitably sassy heroine with a killer pair of black leather boots . . . excellent comfort reading.” —The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books “Brilliantly timed moments of situational comedy . . . plenty to like in this debut.” —Kirkus Reviews “An enjoyable read with sprinklings of magic.” —VOYA

My trusted critics, my kinfolks, said that I didn't tell the full story, didn't even scratch the surface. So after such rig-a-mo-role, I am back to make another stob (stab) at it. Once More and Again is the second book of a series called My Country Breaks up in Town. This writing continues to tell the stories of our foreparents, incorporating some of their wild, winsome, witty, ofttimes, wicked sayings and antics. It was designed for you and our future generations in mind, to let them know from whence they came so that they ne'er (never) burn the bridge down that brought them over. Read the scripture Psalm 78:6 and see if we aren't cooking with gas on this. Learn that! Be prepared to laugh, and laugh some more, folks, as we stir your memory of how it used to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Chong Lau’s poetic memoir of his days as a produce worker in Seattle’s Chinatown reveals a microcosm of grassroots, working-class Asian America—a world where customers, workers, and fruits and vegetables intersect in exchanges that crackle with energy and brim over with humor. With the simple profundity of a Zen koan, the poems bear witness to people’s humanity. Lau portrays in words and pictures a community in constant flux as it moves to the push and pull of immigration. Blues and Greens has a lot to say about Asian Americans. What emerges is an acutely observed, nuanced critique of where Asian Americans—native-born, refugee, and migrant—are today.
