Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Systems Analysis and Computing in Water Quality Management, Held in Gent, Belgium, 18-20 September 2000. The focus of the IWA Specialist Group on Systems Analysis and Computing is essentially methodological. Its goal is to foster discussion of the interdisciplinary issues cutting across the many topics of interest within IWA. Consequently, the themes of the symposium did not reflect specific concerns with sewers, or wastewater treatment, or river basin management, or surface water quality, or groundwater contamination. Rather the symposium was organised along the lines of new models, decision support systems, uncertainty and risk analysis, integrated urban wastewater systems, operations and control, sensors and monitoring, optimal experimental design methodologies, model selection and calibration techniques, and time-series analysis. Evidently, the papers may each have case-specific aspects but they also highlight matters of methodology that are common to all, with a distinctly interdisciplinary character. There was an open call for papers, resulting in abstracts from 30 countries around the world. Papers for oral and poster presentation at the symposium were selected by the Programme Committee from full papers. They were reviewed again and 47 of them were finally included in these proceedings. Notably, 8 of the contributions were selected among the posters through a competition announced prior to the Symposium. The collection of papers in these proceedings are a comprehensive update that will prove invaluable for those working in the fields of environmental engineering, river basin management, aquatic ecology, process optimisation, data mining, planning and monitoring.

Download or read book Dynamical Modelling Estimation in Wastewater Treatment Processes written by D. Dochain and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental quality is becoming an increasing concern in our society. In that context, waste and wastewater treatment, and more specifically biological wastewater treatment processes play an important role. In this book, we concentrate on the mathematical modelling of these processes. The main purpose is to provide the increasing number of professionals who are using models to design, optimise and control wastewater treatment processes with the necessary background for their activities of model building, selection and calibration. The book deals specifically with dynamic models because they allow us to describe the behaviour of treatment plants under the highly dynamic conditions that we want them to operate (e.g. Sequencing Batch Reactors) or we have to operate them (e.g. storm conditions, spills). Further extension is provided to new reactor systems for which partial differential equation descriptions are necessary to account for their distributed parameter nature (e.g. settlers, fixed bed reactors). The model building exercise is introduced as a step-wise activity that, in this book, starts from mass balancing principles. In many cases, different hypotheses and their corresponding models can be proposed for a particular process. It is therefore essential to be able to select from these candidate models in an objective manner. To this end, structure characterisation methods are introduced. Important sections of the book deal with the collection of high quality data using optimal experimental design, parameter estimation techniques for calibration and the on-line use of models in state and parameter estimators. Contents Dynamical Modelling Dynamical Mass Balance Model Building and Analysis Structure Characterisation (SC) Structural Identifiability Practical Identifiability and Optimal Experiment Design for Parameter Estimation (OED/PE) Estimation of Model Parameters Recursive State and Parameter Estimation Glossary Nomenclature

Download or read book Computational Methods in the Management of Hydro Environmental Systems written by V. Nassehi and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides concise, up-to-date and easy-to-follow information on an increasingly important area of hydro-environmental analysis and management. It covers important aspects of both surface and subsurface water quality management, as they are inseparable components of aquifers and the flow in physical domains occur in combination with the other. However, the main emphasis of the book is on the practical development and application of computer based algorithms, via appropriate schemes, to realistic problems. Mathematical theories are not discussed as they can be found in many expert books. All sections of the book include detailed descriptions of practical examples. It also, uniquely, gives explanations regarding the formulation of practical management schedules and tools for hydro-environmental systems. There is a lack of books dealing with the practical aspects of the application of computer modelling techniques to complex hydrodynamical phenomena, and this book has been written for professionals and researchers, especially those who are not trained mathematicians who, nevertheless, need to make managerial decisions. Computational Methods in the Management of Hydro-Environmental Systems will be an invaluable source of information for post-graduate level researchers and decision-makers who need to apply numerical modelling techniques to investigate hydrodynamic phenomena and pollutants dispersion in natural aquatic systems. Professionals and engineers, who now need to gain insights about the working of computer techniques for choosing appropriate schemes and applying them to realistic problems, will also value this work. Masters' level and final-year graduate students are also expected to benefit from the book.
Download or read book Instrumentation Control and Automation VIII written by Gustaf Olsson and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instrumentation, control and automation (ICA) in the water industry has come a long way in the three decades since the first IAWPR workshops on the subject and is now a well established and recognised area of technology. This has resulted from a combination of factors: improvements in the capabilities of hardware and software, developments in theoretical understanding and practical applications, and a wider awareness of the power of ICA. These developments continue at pace, and so the heavyweight programme of the 8th conference in this series (the first under the banner of the International Water Association) attracted a large attendance. A central goal of the conference was to link practical operating experience with new research results on sensor technology, instrumentation, control, and automation systems. This is important in both water and wastewater treatment and transport systems, which incorporate increasingly complex measurement systems, information technology, control systems and human interaction. From the extensive programme 60 papers were selected by a thorough review procedure for these selected proceedings. Topics covers include: process control; sensors for wastewater characterization; benchmarking for control strategy development and testing; sensors for monitoring and detection; process monitoring, detection and early warning systems; process and plant-wide control approaches; modeling and simulation; network control and integrated approaches; applied control; and operational support and experiences. They provide a genuinely state-of-the-art compilation in a field of central importance to water and wastewater.
