Book Waterloo And Gettysburg A Campaign Comparison

Download or read book Waterloo And Gettysburg A Campaign Comparison written by Lieutenant-Colonel George E. Teague and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June of 1815 Napoleon led French forces on an offensive campaign into Belgium against the Allied Anglo-Dutch and Prussian armies under Wellington and Blucher. During this campaign Napoleon and several of his marshals made serious errors that led to missed opportunities for victory and ultimately to defeat at Waterloo. Less than 50 years later Robert E. Lee led Confederate forces on an offensive campaign into Maryland and Pennsylvania against the Union Army under Hooker initially, then Meade. A meeting engagement near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania led to three days of fighting during which Lee and several of his generals made critical errors that allowed opportunities for victory to pass and ultimately led to decisive defeat. These campaigns were remarkably alike in a number of ways. This paper reviews the campaigns and discusses similarities in the strategic settings, campaign objectives, size and disposition of forces, battlefield terrain, tactics employed, and leadership of each army. In particular, the paper compares the performances of selected French and Confederate leaders and how they contributed to the defeat of their respective armies. These comparisons provide valuable lessons learned for the conduct of future military operations.

Book excerpt: Providing an extensive documentation of the most infamous chapter of the American Civil War, this magisterial resource has been acclaimed as the most comprehensive and definitive work on the battle of Gettysburg. Book excerpt: A must-read for those interested in the battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle of the bloodiest war in American history Long recognized as one of the best introductions to the campaign, Albert A. Nofi's The Gettysburg Campaign does not focus exclusively on the three days of the battle, but shows how events of May and June of 1863 set the stage for the engagement, and traces Lee's retreat from the field and the hesitant Northern pursuit, a fascinating tale in itself.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Guggenheim-Lehrman Prize in Military History An Economist Best Book of the Year A Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction Book of the Year The Battle of Gettysburg has been written about at length and thoroughly dissected in terms of strategic importance, but never before has a book taken readers so close to the experience of the individual soldier. Two-time Lincoln Prize winner Allen C. Guelzo shows us the face, the sights and the sounds of nineteenth-century combat: the stone walls and gunpowder clouds of Pickett’s Charge; the reason that the Army of Northern Virginia could be smelled before it could be seen; the march of thousands of men from the banks of the Rappahannock in Virginia to the Pennsylvania hills. What emerges is a previously untold story of army life in the Civil War: from the personal politics roiling the Union and Confederate officer ranks, to the peculiar character of artillery units. Through such scrutiny, one of history’s epic battles is given extraordinarily vivid new life.

Book Napoleon s Waterloo Campaign

Download or read book Napoleon s Waterloo Campaign written by Steven Marthinsen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon's Waterloo Campaign: An Alternate History is a story of this famous campaign with a twist. What would have happened if Marshal Grouchy, Napoleon's wing commander, had marched to the sound of the guns as his subordinate commanders had urged? This intriguing idea is an open invitation for taking a closer look at what might have been in June of 1815. This volume is the first modern full length alternative history written about the Waterloo campaign but it does not stop there. First, the narrative seeks to examine and explain the logic behind the French emperor's decisions and, to a lesser extent, those made by his famous enemies. Then, the change in history is seamlessly inserted into the overall context of the campaign and followed to its dramatic climax at the battle of Ohain on June 19, 1815. The campaign of Waterloo was a series of opportunities taken and missed by both sides and the volume shows how a single decision could have changed the course of history.
