Book Waterloo and Byram Township

Download or read book Waterloo and Byram Township written by Cindy Lee and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1997-08 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its history, Byram Township has thrived upon its rich natural resources. Farmers worked its fertile soil and industrialists exploited the areas rolling hillsthickly forested and full of iron orelong before Pennsylvania became the capital of the United States steel industry. Byram Township, however, is perhaps best known for its many lakes and ponds, which have spurred the communitys industries, transportation, and recreation. During the nineteenth century, the townships rivers and lakes helped to form the Morris Canal, a man-made water highway for the transportation of cargo from Phillipsburg to Jersey City. Once a stop along the Morris Canal, Waterloo is now a historical attraction and a living testament to how Byram Township residents once lived and worked along the canal.

Book The Story of Waterloo Village From Colonial Forge to Canal Town

Download or read book The Story of Waterloo Village From Colonial Forge to Canal Town written by John R. Giles and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-29 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First established in the 1700s as a forge village, Waterloo--located in Sussex County, New Jersey--has endured several eras of decline and growth. An industrial hub and farming community, it played a role in the American Revolution. When the canal arrived, Waterloo reinvented itself into a vital transportation link that helped foster the new nation's first Industrial Revolution. The peacefulness of the canal belies the complex engineering required to integrate it into the village's footprint. Today, beautifully preserved colonial-era buildings complement pre-Civil War structures, Victorian mansions and twentieth-century edifices. Local author John Giles illuminates the constant ebb and flow of the history of Waterloo Village.

Download or read book Stanhope and Byram written by Jennifer Jean Miller and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stanhope and Byram have rich industrial histories that were shaped by local natural resources. Winding its way through Stanhope, the Morris Canal aided the town's iron production, while Lake Musconetcong helped sustain production and transport materials through the area. Stanhope began as an unincorporated village, having been carved out of Byram Township, a neighboring community established in 1798, and was officially incorporated as Stanhope Borough in 1904. Byram benefitted from the Morris Canal, with its Waterloo Village as a thriving halfway point along the canal. Situated between Jersey City and Phillipsburg, Waterloo provided a perfect stopover for weary canal workers. Despite its prime location and various amenities, the village was ultimately abandoned in the 1920s. Preservation and restoration efforts and fundraising have been ongoing, and the site currently offers tours and programs. Stanhope and Byram shares the history of these two close-knit bedroom communities that are embraced for their tranquil scenery and inviting atmospheres.

Book A History of the Andover Ironworks Come Penny Go Pound

Download or read book A History of the Andover Ironworks Come Penny Go Pound written by Kevin W. Wright and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after Philadelphia began to exploit New Jersey's largest hematite deposit in 1758, Andover Furnace and Forge began producing the best metal in the world. Its product was so desirable that the newly formed American military wrested control from Loyalist owners in 1778. This frontier industrial outpost endured thirty-five years before labor costs, competition from cheap imports, careless consumption of woodlands and difficulty in transporting its products finally extinguished its fires. Today, repurposed eighteenth-century stone mills and mansions at Andover and Waterloo testify to the combination of rich ore, abundant water power and seemingly endless forests that long ago attracted teamsters, woodcutters, charcoal burners, miners, molders and smelters to the Appalachian Highlands of New Jersey. Local expert Kevin Wright tells the hidden story of the facets and personalities that once made Andover iron so widely coveted.
