Download or read book Death on Ireland s Eye written by Dean Ruxton and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A tragic death, a murder trial and a 170-year-old mystery – but what really happened? Shortly after Maria Kirwan died in a lonely inlet on Ireland's Eye, it was decided that she had drowned accidentally during a day spent with her husband on the picturesque island. This inquest verdict appeared to conclude the melancholy events that consumed the fishing village of Howth, Co Dublin, in September 1852. But not long afterwards, suspicion fell upon Maria's husband, William Burke Kirwan, as whispers of unspeakable cruelty, an evil character and a secret life rattled through the streets of Dublin. Investigations led to William's arrest and trial for murder. The story swelled into one of the most bitterly divisive chapters in the dark annals of Irish criminal history. Yet questions remain: Does the evidence stand up? What role did the heavy hand of Victorian moral outrage play? Was William really guilty of murder, or did the ever-present 'moral facts' fill in gaps where hard proof was absent? Now, this compelling modern analysis revisits the key evidence, asking sober questions about the facts, half-facts and fantasies buried within the yellowed pages of the Ireland's Eye case files.

The close-knit group can hardly believe that their own Sylvia Compson planned her holiday wedding to sweetheart Andrew in complete secrecy, without the help of even one of her friends. Eager to honour the newlyweds, the Elm Creek Quilters hasten to stitch a bridal quilt for their favourite Master Quilter. As the quilt blocks accumulate, the Elm Creek Quilters celebrate the joy of new beginnings and the ongoing success of their business - until forces conspire to threaten their happiness and prosperity. Two among them falter in their personal relationships, yet they are too proud to share their pain. The financial problems of another leave the quilt project vulnerable to a malicious act that may prevent its completion. And as two others weigh the comfort of the present against dreams of a future far from Elm Creek Manor, closely guarded secrets strain the bonds of friendship with those who may be left behind.

Book A Portrait of Dublin in Maps

Download or read book A Portrait of Dublin in Maps written by Muiris De Buitléir and published by Gill Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted as the Best Irish-Published Book of the Year at the 2013 Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards A Portrait of Dublin in Maps is a unique piece of work. Most countries produce large, comprehensive national atlases, but no similar atlas has been produced for any major city. Each map covers a single view of the whole city at a relatively small scale, covering a single theme or subject, so that patterns and interrelationships can be appreciated and the structure and working of the city can be better understood. The atlas deals with intangible things, such as social class, economic status, politics and religion, and also hidden things, such as the city's geology, drainage, water and electricity supply. It also deals with the past, providing a comprehensible picture of how Dublin developed over time. The internet provides access to a massive amount of information relating to the city of Dublin, but most of it is diffuse and difficult to locate, handle and compare. By contrast, this atlas contains between its covers a vast array of information which is clear and whose parts are directly comparable because of the standard form and scale of each map and the comprehensive range of themes covered. This ground-breaking book will delight native Dubliners and visitors to the city alike. Every major city in Europe should have one.

Book Justice Daniel Cohalan 1865 1946

Download or read book Justice Daniel Cohalan 1865 1946 written by Michael Doorley and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justice Daniel Cohalan, or the 'Judge' as he became known, is best remembered today for his tempestuous relationship with Irish nationalist leader Éamon de Valera during the latter's visit to the United States in 1919-20. Cohalan deserves more attention than this and the story of his life as an American politician and Irish-American nationalist encapsulates the complex relationship between Irish America and Ireland during the early decades of the twentieth century. This biography examines Cohalan's background, his motivations and the wider social and political forces which shaped his Irish-American nationalism and American patriotism. As a senior member of the New York based Irish-American Clan na Gael, Cohalan played a significant role in the run-up to the 1916 Rising. Later, as leader of the 275,000-strong Friends of Irish Freedom, he became the spokesman for Irish-American nationalism during Ireland's War of Independence. Cohalan was also a key figure in American politics. He was chief advisor to New York's Tammany Hall leader Charles F. Murphy from 1906 to 1913 and was a close ally of Senator William Borah in the campaign against the League of Nations. Cohalan also formed a friendship with leading political figures in the Irish Free State such as Executive President William T. Cosgrave who in turn valued Cohalan's corporate and political connections. Cohalan's biography fills an important gap in Irish and American history and deepens our understanding of the phenomenon of Irish-American nationalism during a critical phase in the Irish revolutionary period.
