Book Water Transport in Brick Stone and Concrete

Download or read book Water Transport in Brick Stone and Concrete written by Christopher Hall and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-10-31 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unified description of transport processes involving saturated and unsaturated flow in inorganic building materials and structures. It emphasizes fundamental physics and materials science, mathematical description, and experimental measurement as a basis for engineering design and construction practice. Water Transport in Brick, Stone and Concrete brings together in a unified manner current information and guidance on a complex subject. Durability of much of the built infrastructure depends on how water reacts with the construction material concerned, yet the underlying science of deterioration processes is not yet well understood. This book, by the two leading researchers in the field, will provide a central point of reference for the future. The second edition includes many references to new publications and gives new analyses of important topics in water transport, notably on the evaporation-driven moisture dynamics of built structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moisture Storage and Transport in Concrete Comprehensive insight on moisture transport in cement-based materials by means of experimental investigations and computer simulations Moisture Storage and Transport in Concrete explores how moisture moves through cementitious materials, focusing on its absorption, storage, and distribution with the help of experimental investigations and computer simulations. The text discusses the different ways moisture moves, such as through vapor or capillary action, as well as how it affects the properties of cement-based materials, offering new insights and models to help understand and predict moisture behavior in these materials, which can be important for construction and maintenance. After a short introduction to the topic, the text is split into five chapters. Chapter 1 covers surface energetic principles for moisture storage in porous materials. Chapter 2 explores real pore structure and calculation methods for composition parameters. Chapter 3 explains basic equations for the description of moisture transport. Chapter 4 discusses experimental investigation results with regard to the modeling of moisture transport in concrete materials. Chapter 5 showcases modeling of moisture transport, taking into account sorption hysteresis and time-dependent material changes. Written by a highly qualified author, Moisture Storage and Transport in Concrete also includes discussion on: Dependence of surface energy of water on temperature, on relative humidity of air, and for aqueous salt solutions Calculation of the pore size dependent distribution of inner surfaces using the moisture storage function Temperature influence on the capillary transport coefficients and differences between capillary pressure and hydraulic external pressure Adsorption and desorption isotherms of the CEMI reference material and causes of differences between adsorption and desorption isotherms Sorption isotherms and scanning isotherms of hardened cement paste and concrete Modeling of vapor transport and drying by evaporation of concrete Moisture Storage and Transport in Concrete is an essential reference to help researchers and professionals to make informed decisions for the construction of concrete-based infrastructure, enabling them to avoid common issues such as corrosion of reinforcement steel, deterioration of concrete strength, and the growth of mold and mildew.

Download or read book Optical Phenomenology and Applications written by Masoud Ghandehari and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-26 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to techniques and applications of optical methods for materials Characterization in civil and environmental engineering. Emphasizing chemical sensing and diagnostics, it is written for students and researchers studying the physical and chemical processes in manmade or natural materials. Optical Phenomenology and Applications - Health Monitoring for Infrastructure Materials and the Environment, describes the utility of optical-sensing technologies in applications that include monitoring of transport processes and reaction chemistries in materials of the infrastructure and the subsurface environment. Many of the applications reviewed will address long standing issues in infrastructure health monitoring such as the alkali silica reaction, the role of pH in materials degradation, and the remote and inset characterization of the subsurface environment. The remarkable growth in photonics has contributed immensely to transforming bench-top optical instruments to compact field deployable systems. This has also contributed to optical sensors for environmental sensing and infrastructure health monitoring. Application of optical waveguides and full field imaging for civil and environmental engineering application is introduced and chemical and physical recognition strategies are presented; this is followed by range of filed deployable applications. Emphasizing system robustness, and long-term durability, examples covered include in-situ monitoring of transport phenomena, imaging degradation chemistries, and remote sensing of the subsurface ground water.

Book Stone in Architecture

Download or read book Stone in Architecture written by Siegfried Siegesmund and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The weathering of historical buildings and, indeed, of monuments and sculptures of natural stone is a problem that has been encountered for hundreds of years. However, a dramatic increase in deterioration in the structure of our built heritage has been observed during the past century. To understand the complex interaction that the stone in a building suffers with its near environment (the building) and the macro environment (the local climate and atmospheric conditions) requires an interdisciplinary approach and the application of many disciplines. Climate change over the next 100 years is likely to have a range of direct and indirect impacts on many natural and physical environments, including the built environment. The protection of our architectural heritage has both cultural and historical importance, as well as substantial economic and ecological value. Large sums of money are being spent world-wide on measures for the preservation of monuments and historical buildings. The past few decades has seen an unprecedented level of research activity in this area, the results of which are often difficult to access and are summarized in the new edition of STONE IN ARCHITECTURE.

Book Gas Generation and Migration in Deep Geological Radioactive Waste Repositories

Download or read book Gas Generation and Migration in Deep Geological Radioactive Waste Repositories written by R.P. Shaw and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the behaviour of gases in the context of radioactive waste disposal is a fundamental requirement in developing a safety case for the disposal of radioactive waste. Of particular importance are the long-term performance of bentonite buffers and cement-based backfill materials that may be used to encapsulate and surround the waste in a repository, and the behaviour of plastic clays, indurated mudrocks and crystalline formations that may be the host rocks for a repository. The EC Euratom programme funded project, FORGE, has provided new insights into the processes and mechanisms governing gas generation and migration with the aim of reducing uncertainty. This volume brings together papers on aspects of this topic arising from both the FORGE project and work undertaken elsewhere. This has been achieved by the acquisition of new experimental data coupled with modelling, through a series of laboratory and field-scale experiments performed at a number of underground research laboratories throughout Europe.

Book Limestone in the Built Environment

Download or read book Limestone in the Built Environment written by Bernard J. Smith and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2010 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limestone is a highly successful and widely used building material, found in many important historic buildings and new monuments around the world. Whilst its success reflects its durability under a wide range of environmental conditions, there are still important questions surrounding the selection, use and conservation of build-ing limestones. In order to make best use of new limestone today, and to conserve old limestone most effectively, we need to bring modern research methods to bear on understanding the characteris-tics of different limestones, what mortars to use, and how key lime-stones have responded to polluted atmospheres. This volume brings together recent inter-disciplinary research on these issues, illustrating the diversity of innovative techniques that are now be-ing applied to furthering our understanding of building limestones.
