  • Author : Brahma Chellaney
  • Publisher : Georgetown University Press

  • ISBN : 1626160120
  • Pages : 398 pages

Download or read book Water written by Brahma Chellaney and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-25 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pioneering study about the relationship between fresh water, peace, and security in Asia from the Middle East to Siberia but with a special focus on South and Southeast Asia. Asia is home to many of the world's great rivers and lakes, but its huge population and booming economies make it the most water-scarce continent on a per capita basis. Over extensive irrigation, pollution, and global warming add to the demographic and economic pressures on Asia's fresh water supplies. The location of the sources for much of South and Southeast Asia's fresh water is in the Chinese controlled Tibetan Plateau, and China's increasing exploitation of these water sources have created growing geopolitical tensions that could boil over into conflict. India is reliant on fresh water from Tibet, which gives the Chinese uncomfortable leverage over India and further exacerbates their unsettled border disputes. Vietnam, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other countries of the region also find themselves in similarly vulnerable positions where water is scarce and the sources are increasingly being exploited and polluted upstream by the continent's most powerful country. Brahma Chellaney proposes strategies to avoid conflict and more equitably share and preserve Asia's water resources.

Book Geological Line Selection for the Qinghai Tibet Railway Engineering

Download or read book Geological Line Selection for the Qinghai Tibet Railway Engineering written by Jincheng Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the second phase of the Qinghai–Tibetan railway construction project and is the first technological book discussing the geological routing of the Qinghai–Tibetan railway project on the “roof of the world.” Based on practical experience of railway construction work, it provides a substantial number of examples with detailed descriptions and conclusions. The complex geological environment of the Qinghai–Tibetan railway as well as the selection and optimization of the route are illustrated vividly and clearly with quotes, figures, photos, and tables. Connecting Golmud and Lhasa, it has a total length of 1142 km and at the Tanggula Pass has an altitude of 5072m—higher than any other in the world. A 960 km section is on a plateau at altitudes above 4000 m, and 550 km are in the permafrost region, making it the world’s longest and highest railway in the permafrost plateau region. The book is a model for the integration of theory and practice, making it a valuable reference source for civil engineering professionals working in geological routing in permafrost plateau regions, active fault zones, meizoseismal areas, nature reserves, and regions with geohazards such as steep slopes, sand and snow drifts and geothermal hazards.
