Book Water Resources of Georgia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Water Resources of Georgia Classic Reprint written by Benjamin M. Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Resources of Georgia It is the purpose of this publication to present in a single volume the large amount of data relating to the flow and power of Georgia streams resulting from the work of the water resources branch of the United States Geological Survey, which was begun in the year 1895. These data consist essentially of gauge heights and discharge measurements that can be used to show the continuous daily flow of the streams, and of certain river profiles, in the form of tabulated elevations of water surface at points along the river, that can be used to estimate the available fall at any place. The amount of water flowing in the stream and the fall which can be used will determine the amount of power which can be developed. A systematic study of the water powers of the State requires a knowledge of the drainage systems, which are somewhat intricate. The topography of the State is peculiar. Chattahoochee Ridge, which runs from the northeast corner of the State in a southwesterly and southerly direction through Gainesville, Atlanta, Griffin, Fort Valley, Fitzgerald, and through the Okefenoke Swamp to the Florida line, divides the waters of the Atlantic Ocean from the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and forms the backbone of the State. The great drainage basins on the Atlantic slope are the Savannah, the Ogeechee, the Altamaha, the Satilla, and the St. Marys. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Report on the Water Powers of Georgia Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith a report on the Water Powers of Georgia to be published as Bulletin no. 16 Of this Survey. This is the second bulletin which has been issued by th Survey on this very important subject; and, like the first r Bulletin no. 3, is the result of co-operative work between the Geological Survey and the United States Geological Survey. Report is, in a large measure, a reprint of water-supply and Irriga tion Paper no. 197, entitled the Water Resources Of Georgia, pub lished by the United States Geological Survey in 1907, with the addition Of considerable data subsequently collected. I would here add that the manuscript copy Of this bulletin was submitted to this Survey by the Hall Brothers in 1905 at the same time a copy was furnished the United States Geological Survey; but, owing to the ill health Of my predecessor, its publication has been delayed until the present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Georgia: Its History, Condition, and Resources The Savannah is formed of two small streams which rise near the North Carolina line, and unite on the boun dary between S. Carolina and Georgia in Hart county. Flowing thence in a nearly s.s.e. Direction for 450 miles, it enters the Atlantic near 32 N. Lat. The Savannah is navigable from November to June. Ships ascend it 18 miles to the city of Savannah, steamboats to Augusta, 230 miles, and by means of a canal around the falls there, constructed in 1845, light draught vessels navigate it 150 miles higher. This canal, 9 miles lo'ng, furnishes the water-power of Augusta. The river is here about 300 yards wide. From Augusta the traveller descends the Savannah through. The cotton-fields of the table-lands, and the long reaches of semi-tropical vegetation domi nated by groves of live oak, to the rich rice plantations of the seaboard.
