Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Water Development Outlook charts progress in water security in Asia and the Pacific over the past 5 years. This 2016 edition of the report uses the latest available data to assess water security in five key dimensions: household access to piped potable water and improved sanitation, economic water security, providing better urban water services to build more livable cities, restoring healthy rivers and ecosystems, and resilience to water disasters. The region shows a positive trend in strengthening water security since the 2013 edition of the report, when 38 out of 49 countries were assessed as water-insecure. In 2016, that number dropped to 29 out of 48 countries. This study was supported by ADB’s Water Financing Partnership Facility.

Book Asian Water Development Outlook 2020

Download or read book Asian Water Development Outlook 2020 written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian Water Development Outlook (AWDO) 2020 assesses national water security across Asia and the Pacific, focusing on five key dimensions: rural, economic, urban, environmental, and water-related disaster. Despite considerable achievements in Asia and the Pacific since the AWDO 2013 edition, 1.5 billion people in rural areas and 0.6 billion in urban areas still lack adequate water supply and sanitation. Sound water management and access to reliable service delivery remain vital to inclusive economic growth and social well-being, especially after the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. This edition includes two new sections highlighting the importance of finance and governance to water security as well as case studies demonstrating how the AWDO has influenced policy development in four countries.

Book Metropolitan Water Use Conflicts In Asia And The Pacific

Download or read book Metropolitan Water Use Conflicts In Asia And The Pacific written by James E. Nickum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Asia is the least urbanized continent, it contains half of the world’s megacities and many of the world’s fastest-growing economies. Urban growth is already stressing local water supplies and causing intense conflict among water users—between haves and have-nots in urban areas as well as between farmers and fishers outside the cities. In addition, concern is growing over the depletion and degradation of water sources and over the impact of water policies and patterns of water use on the natural environment. From the perspective of the maturing metropolitan water economy, the contributors to this volume consider the problems of urban water management in the region. They focus on the institutional and policy dimensions of conflict and seek to provide a range of viable options for reducing the growing frictions among water users. Eight specific case studies of urban areas in Asia and the Pacific span a wide range of economic levels of development, physical settings, and hydrological conditions. The book will be of interest to scholars and policymakers concerned with issues of water and environmental policy, urban management, and resource conflict in general.

Case studies and local examples from a broad geographical range of continental shoreline and island settings give an understanding of the diversity of coastal aquifers and the groundwater recourses they harbour. Audience: By providing a clearer understanding of the hydrogeological and hydrochemical processes, this volume offers a critical tool to coastal researchers, geoscientists in related fields, water engineers, groundwater managers and decision makers as it illustrates the human and environmental impacts on coastal groundwater resources and the relationship to coastal zone management strategies and the development of sustainable management approaches.

Book Status of institutional reforms for integrated water resources management in Asia Indications from policy reviews in five countries

Download or read book Status of institutional reforms for integrated water resources management in Asia Indications from policy reviews in five countries written by Bandaragoda, D. J. and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2006-05-16 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case studies were conducted in five selected Asian countries on their water policy reform initiatives. Of the five countries, China stands out as the country that has derived the most from on-going global efforts in promoting water sector institutional reforms and the concept of integrated water resources management (IWRM). China has emerged as the leader in adapting these concepts to suit the context of the country. Advanced stages of water development in many parts of the country and increased water shortages due to rapid economic development have prompted China to forge ahead in the search for institutional solutions to make the water sector more productive, and the management of water resources more sustainable. In the other selected countries, efforts to replicate the models of developed countries without much adaptation and due reference to their stages of development have generally failed. The dominance of irrigation within the water sector and the informality of the economy related to water in these countries seem to make the application of prescribed IWRM principles rather unfeasible. The lesson to be drawn from policy reviews of the five countries is that effective waterinstitutions are not static systems, but are adaptive and dynamic institutional developments compatible with the local context, particularly with the structure of the overall economy of the country and its water sector.
