Tapping on its vast fertile area, the country has been one of the players in global food production for last four decades. However, these achievements have also had negative consequences on biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and human health both in rural and urban areas. Thailand: Environmental Resources and Related Policies and Social Issues reviews the pressures, impacts and status of selected natural resources and environmental concerns, e.g., forest resources, coastal and marine resources, protected areas and biodiversity, soil and land resources, water resources, energy and climate change, and economic instruments and modeling tools for enhancing management planning through various contributed chapters that are organised into five sections: Section One: Setting the Scene; Section Two: Physical Environment and Natural Resources; Section Three: Governance and Management; Section Four: Global Initiatives and Economic Tools; and Section Five: Conclusions and Recommendations. In addition, the concepts and lessons learned from case studies presented in this book do not only provide the analytical review status, but also identify key issues and management options for achieving the designated national goals and international commitments on biodiversity conservation and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. It is hoped that this book will be of value in terms of the necessary inputs to effectively support the implementation of the Thai governments initiatives on moving the country towards Thailand 4.0 or a value-based economy, as well as the recent 20-year National Strategic Plan (2017-2036). The contents and materials will also be of interest to individual scientists, stakeholders, practitioners and policy-makers working for the cause of natural resources and environmental, management and sustainable development in Thailand and beyond.

Book excerpt: "This book presents results of a research program which is characterized by: new areas in research methodology of rural development; focusing on empirical problems in natural resources development, especially water resources, and the relation to living standard of rural people; and impact assessment of problem solving strategies as well as of natural (e.g. disaster) strategies on the future livelihood of rural people with combined family-society and socio-economic-ecological simulation models. In the methodological approach, it combines micro level family view with the society's view at rural regional level by integrating farm management and socioeconomic methods with remote sensing and geographical information systems. Special emphasis is not only given to collection and integration of data of different types, e.g. farmers views in interviews and natural science data as facts from satellite images, but also to the mathematical linkage between family decision models and spatial explicit modeling for simulating the future of the combined interests of individual families and the society at regional level. The empirical analyses centers around the socioeconomic development of different ethnic groups having different access to natural resources, to capital for investment into modern farm production systems, to markets as well as variations in ownership rights. The driving forces behind settlements in new areas (often forests) and the consequences on land use, market supply and living standard of people are analyzed and used for evaluating future strategies. The impact of future problem-solving strategies in the farming business and regional water resources development have been simulated and evaluated based on both the individual families' and the society' objectives using family models and explicit spatial modeling. Furthermore, future developments which are not or to a lesser degree based on individual decision-making, such as increasing land scarcity, changing environmental conditions and climatic changes related to water availability have been forecasted and allow showing limited and even disaster developments in the future. Economic success has brought impressive social advancement. Poverty has plummeted, while education and health services have considerably expanded and improved. These achievements have brought Thailand to a new stage and a new set of challenges. Rising prosperity has not been shared equally across the country and economic transformation needs a boost. The share of those in precarious employment still exceeds half of the working population. The creation of new activities replacing low-productivity ones has slowed while rural migrants and urban poor lack the skills required for modern urban jobs. While Bangkok’s success as a metropolis has been key to Thailand’s transformation, thriving secondary cities are needed that can develop new sources of growth. Experience shows that development is not about getting everything right, but about getting right what matters most. The Initial Assessment of this Multi-Dimensional Review endeavors to identify the challenges and key constraints that must be overcome for Thailand to succeed. It offers recommendations related to informality, productivity and the management of natural resources, particularly water. The next volumes will provide further suggestions for action to address these challenges.

The policies and management practices vary significantly from one country to another, and even within one country, depending on specific economic, political, social, environmental, legal and institutional factors. In order to appreciate the complexities associated with water quality policy and management, it is important to acknowledge the multiplicity of interrelated and often conflicting events, issues, actors and interests, both within and outside the water sector that impact them. This complexity, alongside institutional inability for systematic and coordinated collaboration, are potent reasons as to why, in the second decade of the 21st century, formulation and implementation of efficient water quality management policies benefitting humankind and the environment have still not been achieved. The book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.
