Book Water Quality Issues at Fossil Fuel Plants

Download or read book Water Quality Issues at Fossil Fuel Plants written by William G. Dinchak and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a session at the ASCE Convention, held in Denver, Colorado, May 1-2, 1985. Sponsored by the Energy Division of ASCE. This collection contains 10 papers highlighting proposed approaches and actual projects for dealing with water quality issues at fossil fuel power plants, including water supply, water treatment, and the protection of surface water and groundwater. Described are use of radial wells and a circulating water tunnel (CWT) as water sources for fossil power plants. Unique aspects of the CWT, for example, are a fish deterrent/fish return system, staged diffuser, and intake velocity cap. Solidification of a flue gas desulfurization slurry, a radically different method of handling and disposing of fly ash and bottom ash, a soil-bentonite cutoff wall for coal pile leachate control, conversion of a wet fly and bottom ash sluicing system to a dry fly ash handling system followed by landfilling, and other waste handling systems are included. In addition, development of a coal pile drainage model, data concerning the leachate characteristics of various fly ashes, and a methodology used to estimate waste quality discharge concentrations are presented. The handling, chemical and toxicological nature of wastewaters from combined cycle coal conversion facilities are also described. This volume is a compendium of state-of-the-art information that should be helpful to designers of treatment systems serving fossil power plants.

Book Water Quality Impacts of the Energy Water Nexus

Download or read book Water Quality Impacts of the Energy Water Nexus written by Avner Vengosh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy and water have been fundamental to powering the global economy and building modern society. This cross-disciplinary book provides an integrated assessment of the different scientific and policy tools around the energy-water nexus. It focuses on how water use, and wastewater and waste solids produced from fossil fuel energy production affect water quality and quantity. Summarizing cutting edge research, it describes the scientific methods for detecting contamination sources in the context of policy and regulations. The authors highlight the growing evidence that fossil fuel production, from both conventional and unconventional sources, leads to water quality degradation, while regulations for the water and energy sector remain fractured and highly variable across and within countries. This volume will be a key reference for scholars, industry professionals, environmental consultants and policy makers seeking information on the risks associated with the energy cycle and its impact on the environment, particularly water resources.

Book The Power of Renewables

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chinese Academy of Engineering
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2011-01-29
  • ISBN : 0309160006
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book The Power of Renewables written by Chinese Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-01-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and China are the world's top two energy consumers and, as of 2010, the two largest economies. Consequently, they have a decisive role to play in the world's clean energy future. Both countries are also motivated by related goals, namely diversified energy portfolios, job creation, energy security, and pollution reduction, making renewable energy development an important strategy with wide-ranging implications. Given the size of their energy markets, any substantial progress the two countries make in advancing use of renewable energy will provide global benefits, in terms of enhanced technological understanding, reduced costs through expanded deployment, and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to conventional generation from fossil fuels. Within this context, the U.S. National Academies, in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), reviewed renewable energy development and deployment in the two countries, to highlight prospects for collaboration across the research to deployment chain and to suggest strategies which would promote more rapid and economical attainment of renewable energy goals. Main findings and concerning renewable resource assessments, technology development, environmental impacts, market infrastructure, among others, are presented. Specific recommendations have been limited to those judged to be most likely to accelerate the pace of deployment, increase cost-competitiveness, or shape the future market for renewable energy. The recommendations presented here are also pragmatic and achievable.

Book Water Energy Nexus in the People s Republic of China and Emerging Issues

Download or read book Water Energy Nexus in the People s Republic of China and Emerging Issues written by Pradeep Perera and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water and energy are both valuable resources and indispensable for human society and economic development. By nature, water and energy are interlinked. Water plays a critical role in the generation of electricity for cooling of thermal power plants and in hydropower, as well as in the production of fossil fuels such as coal; energy is required to treat, distribute, and for wastewater treatment. Choices made in either of the sectors may have unintended and often negative implications on the other sector. This report analyzes the trade-off between the two sectors in the context of the People's republic of China and proposes recommendations to ensure that the choices made are sustainable in the long run.

Book Environmental Impact of Power Generation

Download or read book Environmental Impact of Power Generation written by R E Hester and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's automated world, the need for economic generation of power is of vital importance. However, the industry is commonly perceived as being responsible for pollution of the atmosphere and contamination of land and water. The wide-ranging subjects addressed in this book will contribute to the public understanding of science in this important area. Encompassing areas as diverse as current performance standards and the use of nuclear fuel, Environmental Impact of Power Generation also includes an historical overview of electricity supply. The emotive issues of air pollution and the ecological effects of overhead power lines are tackled, along with energy efficiency and conservation. This book will be essential reading for students and practitioners in environmental science and engineering.

Book Water Requirements Availabilities Constraints and Recommended Federal Actions

Download or read book Water Requirements Availabilities Constraints and Recommended Federal Actions written by Water Resources Council (U.S.) and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a technical analysis of the Water Resources Council prepared to determine the degree to which the water resources of the United States will be able to accommodate potential increases in energy production. The study considers the competition of energy-related water requirements with existing or anticipated future water uses for other purposes; accommodation of energy-related water requirements with other competing uses; the magnitude and extent of any water supply shortages, water quality, institutional and other water supply problems (environmental, capital investment, manpower, inter-basin transfer) that may restrict or prevent selected future condition energy development scenarios from being implemented; water-related Federal actions required to overcome problems and constraints of the nature described above; the requirements which need to be placed on hydroelectric power generation capability to assist in meeting the Nation's energy needs.
