Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is vital to life, maintenance of ecological balance, economic development, and sustenance of civilization. Planning and management of water resources and its optimal use are a matter of urgency for most countries of the world, and even more so for India with a huge population. Growing population and expanding economic activities exert increasing demands on water for varied needs--domestic, industrial, agricultural, power generation, navigation, recreation, etc. In India, agriculture is the highest user of water. The past three decades have witnessed numerous advances as well as have presented intriguing challenges and exciting opportunities in hydrology and water resources. Compounding them has been the growing environmental consciousness. Nowhere are these challenges more apparent than in India. As we approach the twenty first century, it is entirely fitting to take stock of what has been accomplished and what remains to be accomplished, and what accomplishments are relevant, with particular reference to Indian conditions.

Book Internal Phosphorus Loading in Lakes

Download or read book Internal Phosphorus Loading in Lakes written by Bryan Spears and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrient enrichment of lakes is a ubiquitous problem, impacting ecological and human health on a global scale by accelerating the pace of eutrophication, often resulting in algal blooms, depleted dissolved oxygen concentrations, and economic harm to surrounding communities. In many lakes, bed sediments are a major but unrecognized source of phosphorus to the water, a process known as internal phosphorus loading. Internal loading is notoriously difficult to measure and manage given the need to access processes operating on and within the lakebed. In addition, climate change threatens to promote internal loading. For example, warming of lakes can increase the release of phosphorus from sediments due to 1) longer and stronger periods of lake stratification resulting in sediment anoxia and 2) enhanced microbial decomposition of organic matter. Degraded water quality not only impairs ecological health but also can influence social pride and community morale. This is the first book dedicated to the understanding of internal phosphorus loading in lakes and examines the causes, the ecological and societal impacts, and options for managing this complex phenomenon. With contributions from leading experts, this edited volume provides a broad view of internal phosphorus loading, methods for measurement, management practices for water quality improvement, case studies from around the world, and recommendations for addressing this growing concern. It is essential reading for environmental and engineering professionals involved in lake and reservoir management, students and faculty in limnology, state and federal authorities involved in water quality regulation, and lakefront homeowners and management boards interested in maintaining lake water quality and managing algal blooms. Key Features * First-ever comprehensive volume on internal phosphorous loading that clearly details what it is and why it occurs * Identifies and explores the drivers of internal phosphorus loading * Provi

Book Lake Functioning

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gertrud K. Nürnberg
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2024-10-10
  • ISBN : 1040133681
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Lake Functioning written by Gertrud K. Nürnberg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-10-10 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interconnections of internal phosphorus loading, cyanobacteria, and climate change and their role in determining water quality in freshwater. It goes on to discuss the sometimes elusive process of internal phosphorus loading with its chemical and biological roots. Reviewing recent observations on present and future climate change, the book explores its effects on lake functioning. It concludes with the abatement and prevention of cyanobacteria proliferation, including techniques that deal with internal phosphorus loading. Some key topics covered are: In-depth exploration of internal phosphorus loading and its quantification in global lakes with diverse morphometry, hydrology, geochemistry, and degree of eutrophication. Determination of climate change effects on physical, chemical, and cyanobacteria-related variables in tables based on more than 100 reviewed journal articles. Evidence for the enhancing influences of climate change on internal phosphorus load and cyanobacteria, and of internal load on cyanobacteria. This book will be of interest to limnologists, environmental and engineering professionals, and natural science students. It will also be an interesting read to government agents, lake managers, and others interested in maintaining lake water quality and understanding algal blooms.

Book On the Dynamics of Phosphorus in Lake Systems

Download or read book On the Dynamics of Phosphorus in Lake Systems written by Bernard C. Kenney and published by Saskatoon : Inland Waters Directorate, National Hydrology Research Institute, National Hydrology Research Centre. This book was released on 1990 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phosphorus loading concept is examined within the framework of equilibrium input-output models. Some theoretical and practical shortcomings of several phosphorus models are then discussed. Finally, the dynamics of total phosphorus in lakes is explored using first-order linear theory with time-dependent coefficients.
