Book excerpt: Rapid Creek originates at the Pactola Reservoir dam in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Its route continues through Rapid City, SD, completing its flow as it enters the Cheyenne River, approximately 20 miles east of Rapid City. This research focuses on nonpoint source pollutants and their effects on the health of Rapid Creek within city limits. Over a period of two months, the water quality of Rapid Creek was tested at five different sites. Temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen content were the physical properties collected. Concentrations of nitrates, phosphates, chlorides and total suspended solids were also determined. A final analysis of these seven properties was performed to determine if nonpoint source pollution affects Rapid Creek.

Download or read book Total Maximum Daily Load Project for Lower Rapid Creek written by Ronald G. Dell and published by . This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to establish a database that contained results from actual field samples that could be used to develop total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) for the Lower Rapid Creek Watershed. The collected data was compared to South Dakota Surface Water Quality Standards (SDSWQS) to determine if Lower Rapid Creek met the physical, chemical, and biological parameters set forth in the SDSWQS. Tables 1 through 8 in Appendix I list the parameters that were monitored, the sample results obtained for those parameters, and the SDSWQS used to determine if violations were detected at any of the eight representative sample sites. Any violation that was detected was then evaluated to determine the source(s) of the pollutant or contaminant.

Book excerpt: Water is a very important and essential, non-renewable resource. The evaluation of water is constantly being examined. The desire to improve the water resources available is always a concern. The main focus of this documentation is an analysis of the Rapid Creek Basin in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Two major areas are discussed: 1) Background on water: its uses, composition, quality, development and management policies, 2) The actual analysis of Rapid Creek: methods and measurements, observations and conclusions.
