Book excerpt: “One of the best thriller writers on the planet.” —The Real Book Spy In the next thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling Mitch Rapp series, it’s a race against the clock when ISIS takes out the entire US power grid and throws the country into chaos. When Mitch Rapp captures ISIS’s top technology expert, he reveals that he was on his way to meet a man who claims to have the ability to bring down America’s power grid. Rapp is determined to eliminate this shadowy figure, but the CIA’s trap fails. The Agency is still trying to determine what went wrong when ISIS operatives help this cyber terrorist do what he said he could—plunge the country into darkness. With no concept of how this unprecedented act was accomplished, the task of getting the power back on could take months. Perhaps even years. Rapp and his team embark on a desperate search for the only people who know how to repair the damage—the ones responsible. But his operating environment is like nothing he’s experienced before. Computers and communication networks are down, fuel can no longer be pumped from gas stations, water and sanitation systems are on the brink of collapse, and the supply of food is running out. Can Rapp get the lights back on before America descends irretrievably into chaos? This compulsive thriller proves once again that the Mitch Rapp series is “the best of the best when it comes to the world of special ops” (Booklist, starred review).

Book Stronger Than a Hundred Men

Download or read book Stronger Than a Hundred Men written by Terry S. Reynolds and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like many apparently simple devices, the vertical water wheel has been around for so long that it is taken for granted. Yet this "picturesque artifact" was for centuries man's primary mechanical source of power and was the foundation upon which mills and other industries developed. Stronger than a Hundred Men explores the development of the vertical water wheel from its invention in ancient times through its eventual demise as a source of power during the Industrial Revolution. Spanning more than 2000 years, Terry Reynolds's account follows the progression of this labor-saving device from Asia to the Middle East, Europe, and America-covering the evolution of the water wheel itself, the development of dams and reservoirs, and the applications of water power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Treatise on Mills and Millwork, Vol. 1: On the Principles of Mechanism and on Prime Movers; Comprising the Accumulation and Estimation of Water Power; The Construction of Water Wheels and Turbines; The Properties of Steam; The Varieties of Steam Engines and Boilers, and Windmills WE may search in vain for dates from which to calculate the earliest period at which the principles of accumulating power, and transmitting it for employment in mills, were first introduced, and it is equally impossible to trace. Consecutively the progressive developments that have taken place from the days of antiquity to the present improved state of the arts. Perhaps the earliest introduction of machinery was in the pro cesses for the preparation of food, as we read of the Egyptians and Babylonians, and other nations in Europe and Asia, having mills for grinding corn from the earliest period of historical records. Hesiod and Pliny both describe the most primitive method of the preparation of com, a method still further illus trated among the pictorial remains of the Egyptians, viz. Pounding in a mortar. Book Fossil Capital

Download or read book Fossil Capital written by Andreas Malm and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How capitalism first promoted fossil fuels with the rise of steam power The more we know about the catastrophic implications of climate change, the more fossil fuels we burn. How did we end up in this mess? In this masterful new history, Andreas Malm claims it all began in Britain with the rise of steam power. But why did manufacturers turn from traditional sources of power, notably water mills, to an engine fired by coal? Contrary to established views, steam offered neither cheaper nor more abundant energy—but rather superior control of subordinate labour. Animated by fossil fuels, capital could concentrate production at the most profitable sites and during the most convenient hours, as it continues to do today. Sweeping from nineteenth-century Manchester to the emissions explosion in China, from the original triumph of coal to the stalled shift to renewables, this study hones in on the burning heart of capital and demonstrates, in unprecedented depth, that turning down the heat will mean a radical overthrow of the current economic order.
