Book Water Pollution VIII

Download or read book Water Pollution VIII written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book publishes the proceedings of the Eighth International Conference on Modelling, Measuring and Prediction of Water Pollution. Water pollution is a subject of growing public concern. The scientific community has responded very rapidly to the need for studies capable of relating the pollutant discharge with changes in the water quality. The results of these studies are permitting industries to employ more efficient methods of controlling and treating waste loads, and water authorities to enforce stricter regulations regarding this matter. Bringing together papers from world renowned experts in this field, the text encompasses themes such as: Groundwater and Aquifer Contamination; Wastewater Treatment; Re-use of Water; Lakes, Rivers and Wetlands; Coastal Areas and Seas; Biological Effects; Agricultural Pollution; Oil Spills; Mathematical and Physical Modeling; Experimental and Laboratory Work; Surveying Techniques, Monitoring and Remote Sensing; Remediation Studies; Health Risk; Social and Economic Issues; Pollution Prevention; GIS and Remote Sensing Applications; Environmental Management and Decision Analysis; Environmental Impact Assessment.

Book Clean Coastal Waters

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2000-08-17
  • ISBN : 0309069483
  • Pages : 422 pages

Download or read book Clean Coastal Waters written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-08-17 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental problems in coastal ecosystems can sometimes be attributed to excess nutrients flowing from upstream watersheds into estuarine settings. This nutrient over-enrichment can result in toxic algal blooms, shellfish poisoning, coral reef destruction, and other harmful outcomes. All U.S. coasts show signs of nutrient over-enrichment, and scientists predict worsening problems in the years ahead. Clean Coastal Waters explains technical aspects of nutrient over-enrichment and proposes both immediate local action by coastal managers and a longer-term national strategy incorporating policy design, classification of affected sites, law and regulation, coordination, and communication. Highlighting the Gulf of Mexico's "Dead Zone," the Pfiesteria outbreak in a tributary of Chesapeake Bay, and other cases, the book explains how nutrients work in the environment, why nitrogen is important, how enrichment turns into over-enrichment, and why some environments are especially susceptible. Economic as well as ecological impacts are examined. In addressing abatement strategies, the committee discusses the importance of monitoring sites, developing useful models of over-enrichment, and setting water quality goals. The book also reviews voluntary programs, mandatory controls, tax incentives, and other policy options for reducing the flow of nutrients from agricultural operations and other sources.

Book Marine Pollution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Judith S. Weis
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-10-01
  • ISBN : 0199996717
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Marine Pollution written by Judith S. Weis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine pollution occurs today in varied forms--chemical, industrial, and agricultural-and the sources of pollution are endless. In recent history, we've seen oil spills, untreated sewage, eutrophication, invasive species, heavy metals, acidification, radioactive substances, marine litter, and overfishing, among other significant problems. Though marine pollution has long been a topic of concern, it has very recently exploded in environmental, economic, and political debate circles; scientists and non-scientists alike continue to be shocked and dismayed at the sheer diversity of water pollutants and the many ways they can come to harm our environment and our bodies. In Marine Pollution: What Everyone Needs to Know, Judith Weis covers marine pollution from numerous angles, each fascinating in its own right. Beginning with its sources and history, she discusses common pollutants, why they are harmful, why they cause controversy, and how we can prevent them from destroying our aquatic ecosystems. Questions ask what actually happened with the Exxon Valdez, and why harmful algal blooms are a serious concern. Covering pollutants that are only now surfacing as major threats, such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and metal nanoparticles, she explains how these can begin in the water and progress up the food chain to emerge in human bodies. Looking at the effects of climate change and acidification on marine pollution levels, we learn how we can begin to reduce pollution at the local and global levels.

Book Eighth International Conference on Water Pollution Research

Download or read book Eighth International Conference on Water Pollution Research written by S. H. Jenkins and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 1070 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water Pollution Research covers the proceedings of the Eighth International Conference on Water Pollution Research, held in Sydney, Australia on October 17-22, 1976. This book is composed of 150 and begins with discussions of the different sources of water pollution, including aerosolization, viral contamination, hydrocarbons, and heavy metals. Considerable chapters are devoted to various chemical processes for wastewater management; technical requirements for standard water quality; and methods of pollutant analysis. These topics are followed by surveys of Sydney's design of ocean outfall, an integrated pollution control system, and sewage sludge disposal. Other chapters describe the features of wastewater treatment reactors and other treatment alternatives. The remaining chapters present various case studies demonstrating the performance and improvements of different wastewater treatment facilities. This book will prove useful to water pollution researchers, environmentalists, and design engineers.

Book International River Water Quality

Download or read book International River Water Quality written by Gerry Best and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-08-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers presented at the 2nd International River Quality Symposium. The papers give case studies of the quality of rivers in different parts of the world, focusing particularly on the polluted Vistula River in Poland and the revived Will amette River in Oregon, USA which was the subject of a major cleaning operation in the 1970s. The book provides valuable information on the quality of rivers in Eastern Europe, particulary Poland. It is timely since, with the collapse of communism, Eastern European countries are faced with tackling huge environmental problems created by the lack of investment in environmental technology. The situation in Poland is contrasted with the USA and UK where water pollution problems have largely been overcome.
