Book excerpt: Pollution: Causes, Effects and Control is the fourth edition of a best-selling introductory level book dealing with chemical and radioactive pollution in its broadest sense. The scope of the book ranges from the sources of pollutants and their environmental behaviour, to their effects on human and non-human receptors, to the technologies and strategies available for control. The fourth edition has been wholly revised and updated from the previous edition due to the rapid pace of developments in this field. Topics covered include chemical pollution of freshwater and marine environments, drinking water quality, water pollution biology, sewage and its treatment, toxic wastes, air pollution and atmospheric chemistry, control of pollutant emissions, land contamination, solid waste management, clean technologies, persistent organic pollutants in the environment, environmental radioactivity, health effects of environmental chemicals, legal control of pollution and integrated pollution control. There is a completely new chapter on Clean Technologies and Industrial Ecology, reflecting the growing importance of pollution prevention as opposed to end-of-pipe solutions. Whilst originally intended as an introductory reference work for professionals within the field, the book has been widely adopted for teaching purposes at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water pollution is the contamination of water as a result of human activities. It is primarily caused by the discharge of inadequately treated wastewater into natural water streams leading to environmental degradation and impacts on public health. Other effects include eutrophication, acidity, anoxia, etc. Common contaminants contributing to water pollution include chemicals and pathogens. Water pollution can be classified as surface water, groundwater and marine pollution. The measurement of water pollution is done by analyzing water samples with a variety of physical, chemical and biological tests. Prevention of pollution can be achieved by the adoption of appropriate sewage and industrial treatments, control of urban runoff, agricultural wastewater management, erosion and sediment control, etc. This book provides comprehensive insights into the field of water pollution. It discusses some existing theories and innovative concepts revolving around water pollution, its treatment and mitigation strategies. Download or read book Water Pollution Control and Treatment written by Ezra Duncan and published by States Academic Press. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water pollution refers to the contamination of water due to the release of substances into water bodies. The pollution sources that pollute water are broadly categorized into point sources and non-point sources. The contaminants that enter the water bodies from a single and identifiable source are referred to as point sources of water pollution. These include discharges from factory and sewage treatment plant. Non-point sources of water pollution are defined as the contamination caused by the cumulative effect of small amounts of contaminants that accumulate from a large area. The various contaminants that cause water pollution encompass pathogens and a wide spectrum of chemicals. Water pollution can be divided on the basis of its location into surface water pollution and groundwater pollution. Most of the topics introduced in this book cover new techniques to control water pollution. It consists of contributions made by international experts. This book will prove to be immensely beneficial to students and researchers in this field.

Book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply

Download or read book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, New York City adopted a mammoth watershed agreement to protect its drinking water and avoid filtration of its large upstate surface water supply. Shortly thereafter, the NRC began an analysis of the agreement's scientific validity. The resulting book finds New York City's watershed agreement to be a good template for proactive watershed management that, if properly implemented, will maintain high water quality. However, it cautions that the agreement is not a guarantee of permanent filtration avoidance because of changing regulations, uncertainties regarding pollution sources, advances in treatment technologies, and natural variations in watershed conditions. The book recommends that New York City place its highest priority on pathogenic microorganisms in the watershed and direct its resources toward improving methods for detecting pathogens, understanding pathogen transport and fate, and demonstrating that best management practices will remove pathogens. Other recommendations, which are broadly applicable to surface water supplies across the country, target buffer zones, stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and effluent trading.
