Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Plants: A Study of Aquatic Angiosperms Aquatic Angiosperms are derived from terrestrial ancestors, and have adopted the water habit at various times subsequent to their first appearance as Flowering Plants. The hydrophytes thus present the great advantage to the student, that they form a group for whose history there is a generally accepted foundation. Throughout the present study I have constantly borne phylogenetic questions in mind, and the first three Parts Of this book may be regarded as a clearing Of the ground for the more theoretic considerations concerning the evolutionary history Of water plants to which the Fourth Part is mainly devoted. In that section Of the book, and sporadically in the earlier chapters, I have set down such Speculations as have been borne in upon me in the course Of a study Of water plants with which I have been occupied more or less continuously for the last ten years. The literature relating to Aquatic Angiosperms has now grown to such formidable proportions that I have felt the necessity Of trying to provide some clue to the labyrinth. With this end in view I have given a bibliography Of the principal sources, which includes a brief indication Of the nature and scope Of each work, with page numbers showing where it is cited in the text. For the convenience Of those seeking informa tion about any particular plant, I have indexed the families and genera named in the titles enumerated, and in the notes regard ing the contents Of each memoir. -i found it impracticable to compile a subject index to the bibliography, but the references under the individual chapters to some extent serve this purpose. Book The Biological Relation of Aquatic Plants to the Substratum Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Biological Relation of Aquatic Plants to the Substratum Classic Reprint written by Raymond Haines Pond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biological Relation of Aquatic Plants to the Substratum The observations of hoppe-seyler, then, show that the upper layers of the water of the lake to a depth of 2 meters are practically satu rated with oxygen, not only where larger aquatic plants are growing, but where there are no such plants. These plants can therefore have no practical effect in increasing the oxygen content of the superficial layer Of water. Since his observations show further that in no part of the lake, even at great depths, and in other situations destitute of larger aquatic plants, is there more than a small quantity of uncombined carbon dioxid present, it is clear that the larger plants are not essential for the removal of this gas from the water. It is removed rather as a free gas, by the formation of carbonates. The statement, however, that the larger aquatic plants can not be regarded as essential for the furnishing of oxygen to the animals of a lake or for the removal of carbon dioxid injurious to those animals must be understood as applying only to lakes of considerable size - not to small ponds nor to standing aquaria. Book Aquatic Plants in Pond Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Aquatic Plants in Pond Culture Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aquatic Plants in Pond Culture It is perhaps superfluous to add that submerged plants bind the bottom soil together, thus acting as a deterrent to turbidity from that source; and that plants doubtless facilitate clarification when the water of a pond has become turbid with surface drainage after a rain or from other external causes of a temporary character. The superintendent of the Tupelo, Mississippi, station, Mr. C. W. Burn ham, cites as an evidence of this the numerous reservoirs or tanks in the West which are devoid of vegetation and in which the water is constantly roiled. It is possible that in some instances the absence of vegetation is due to the constantly roily water, a condition else where referred to; but control tests in aquaria demonstrate that in an aquarium containing Cabomba the water is clarified much more quickly than in one devoid of vegetation. It is believed that if many of the so-called tanks of the Western States now devoid of vege tation could be stocked with water plants, these would not only pre vent turbid water by binding the bottom soil together, but would under certain conditions prove an aid to clarification.
