Book Environmental Engineering for the 21st Century

This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental engineers support the well-being of people and the planet in areas where the two intersect. Over the decades the field has improved countless lives through innovative systems for delivering water, treating waste, and preventing and remediating pollution in air, water, and soil. These achievements are a testament to the multidisciplinary, pragmatic, systems-oriented approach that characterizes environmental engineering. Environmental Engineering for the 21st Century: Addressing Grand Challenges outlines the crucial role for environmental engineers in this period of dramatic growth and change. The report identifies five pressing challenges of the 21st century that environmental engineers are uniquely poised to help advance: sustainably supply food, water, and energy; curb climate change and adapt to its impacts; design a future without pollution and waste; create efficient, healthy, resilient cities; and foster informed decisions and actions.

Book Water Infrastructure

Download or read book Water Infrastructure written by Albert Engel and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy-makers are giving increased attention to issues associated with financing and investing in the nation's drinking water and waste-water treatment systems, which take in water, treat it, and distribute it to households and other customers, and later collect, treat, and discharge water after use. The renewed attention is due to a combination of factors. These include the financial impacts on communities of meeting existing and anticipated regulatory requirements, the need to repair and replace existing infrastructure, concerns about paying for security-related projects, and proposals to stimulate U.S. economic activity by building and rebuilding the nation's infrastructure. This book identifies a number of issues that continue to receive attention in connection with water infrastructure investment. It begins with a review of federal involvement; describes the debate about needs; and then examines key issues, including the nature of the problems to be solved, who will pay, and what the federal role is, and questions about mechanisms for delivering federal support.

  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book Water Infrastructure written by Cecilia Tortajada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water infrastructure is an essential element in water management. Together with institutions, policies and regulation, it provides basic services to growing populations, especially in developing countries, where much of the growth is taking place. In the Asia-Pacific region, for instance, populations are growing not only in size but also in affluence, straining further the existing infrastructure and demanding urgently the development of a new one. While 79% of total water use in Asia occurs in agriculture, the fastest increases in demand are emanating from industry and from urban areas. This trend is a natural consequence of the fastest industrialization and urbanization process in history. By 2030, more than 55% of Asia’s population will live in urban areas, an increase of 1.1 billion people. Nevertheless, water infrastructure is of concern not only in the global South but also in the North, where much of the drinking-water infrastructure needs upgrading or replacement, a significant undertaking as infrastructure is more than a hundred years old in many cases. The American Water Works Association estimates that changing all of the water pipes in the United States would cost more than USD 1 trillion. In this book, in-depth case studies on water infrastructure challenges and policy solutions are presented from different parts of the world. This book was published as a special issue of the International Journal of Water Resources Development.

Book Drinking Water the District of Columbia and Communities Nationwide Face Serious Challenges in Their Efforts to Safeguard Water Supplies

Download or read book Drinking Water the District of Columbia and Communities Nationwide Face Serious Challenges in Their Efforts to Safeguard Water Supplies written by John B. Stephenson and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery in 2004 of lead contam. in D.C.¿s drinking water resulted in an admin. order between the EPA and D.C.¿s Water and Sewer Authority (WASA), requiring WASA to take a number of corrective actions. WASA also took longer-term measures, incl. a $400 million program to replace 35,000 lead service lines. Water utilities nationwide are under increasing pressure to make significant investments to upgrade aging and deteriorating infrastructures, improve security, serve a growing pop¿n., and meet new regulatory require. This testimony discusses: WASA¿s efforts to address lead contam. in light of its other pressing water infrastructure needs; and the extent to which WASA¿s challenges are indicative of those facing water utilities nationwide.
