Book Water Flow and Solute Transport in Soils

Download or read book Water Flow and Solute Transport in Soils written by David Russo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A year has passed since Eshel Bresler, my good friend and colleague, and a member of the editorial board of the Advanced Series in Agricultural Sciences, died suddenly while on a visit to the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. We had worked together for almost 30 years at the Institute of Soils and Water, ARO, The Volcani Center at Bet Dagan. At the very beginning of our scientific careers we cooperated directly and as a result one of our first publications was coauthored (Soil Sci. 101:205-209, 1966). Thereafter, our specific research interests diver sified, but we continued to work together, with similar approaches to research, and to strive towards the development of Israel soil science and its integration into general worldwide scientific progress. I don't need to emphasize Eshel's contribution to the understan ding of the processes governing water flow and solute transport pro cesses in soils and unsaturated zones. The contributions to this Volume by such a body of outstanding scientists shows the apprecia tion of the international scientific community to his research achievements.

Book Modelling of Water Flow and Solute Transport

Download or read book Modelling of Water Flow and Solute Transport written by Nguyen Duy Binh and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focusses on one of the most complex and difficult problems in subsurface flow: the transport of water and dissolved substances through unsaturated soils. The predominantly vertical flow in the unsaturated zone is governing the processes of groundwater recharge as well as the input of any kind of waterborn substances that may be transported from the surface through the unsaturated zone into the groundwater body. The book focusses on analyzing the transport of water and solutes in unsaturated-saturated porous media with special emphasis on macropore effects due to plant roots - a significant effect in agricultural areas. Another specific strength of the present book is to be seen in the fact that a unique set of relatively large soil column tests has been conducted in a field setup, in which the effect of decayed plant roots channels on solute transport processes was investigated. These intensive field tests and the new results derived from the experiments provide a significant step forward in our understanding and quantification of the role of macropores connected with plant root channels.

Book Field Scale Water and Solute Flux in Soils

Download or read book Field Scale Water and Solute Flux in Soils written by Roth and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the first workshop held at Monte Verità near Ascona, Switzerland on September 24-29, 1989. The workshop was designed to survey the current understanding of water and solute transport through unsaturated soils under field conditions, and to foster research by discussing some unresolved key issues relative to transport modeling and experimentation in four "Think Tank" groups. The first part of this book consists of the reports prepared by the Think Tank groups, who discussed the following topics: modeling approaches, effective large scale properties, evaluation of filed properties, and the role preferential flow. The second part contains a selection of reviewed original contributions presented at the workshop, with topics ranging from the presentation of results from large scale experiments, to improved or new modeling approaches, and to legal or policy aspects. This book is intended for researchers in soil science, hydrology, and environmental engineering who have an interest in transport and reaction processes in the unsaturated zone. It will provide them with a representative sample of current research activities, and with a group discussion of future research directions in four important areas of water and solute transport.

Book Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone

Download or read book Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-05-21 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid flow and solute transport within the vadose zone, the unsaturated zone between the land surface and the water table, can be the cause of expanded plumes arising from localized contaminant sources. An understanding of vadose zone processes is, therefore, an essential prerequisite for cost-effective contaminant remediation efforts. In addition, because such features are potential avenues for rapid transport of chemicals from contamination sources to the water table, the presence of fractures and other channel-like openings in the vadose zone poses a particularly significant problem, Conceptual Models of Flow and Transport in the Fractured Vadose Zone is based on the work of a panel established under the auspices of the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics. It emphasizes the importance of conceptual models and goes on to review the conceptual model development, testing, and refinement processes. The book examines fluid flow and transport mechanisms, noting the difficulty of modeling solute transport, and identifies geochemical and environmental tracer data as important components of the modeling process. Finally, the book recommends several areas for continued research.
