Book Strategic Planning for the Florida Citrus Industry

Download or read book Strategic Planning for the Florida Citrus Industry written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citrus greening, a disease that reduces yield, compromises the flavor, color, and size of citrus fruit and eventually kills the citrus tree, is now present in all 34 Floridian citrus-producing counties. Caused by an insect-spread bacterial infection, the disease reduced citrus production in 2008 by several percent and continues to spread, threatening the existence of Florida's $9.3 billion citrus industry. A successful citrus greening response will focus on earlier detection of diseased trees, so that these sources of new infections can be removed more quickly, and on new methods to control the insects that carry the bacteria. In the longerterm, technologies such as genomics could be used to develop new citrus strains that are resistant to both the bacteria and the insect.

The book deals with the history, distribution and climatic adaptation of the crop, followed by taxonomy and systematics, including a horticultural classification of edible citrus species. Subsequent chapters cover tree structure and function, reproductive physiology, including flowering, fruiting, productivity, ripening, post-harvest and fruit constituents. The main aspects of cultivated citrus, such as rootstocks, irrigation, pests, viruses and diseases are dealt with, leading to a concluding chapter that considers genetic improvement, including the use of tissue culture and plant biotechnology. Book Citrus Industry of Florida

Download or read book Citrus Industry of Florida written by A. F. Camp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Industry of Florida: Part 1. Citrus Growing in Florida; Part II. Packing House Operations; Part III. Citrus Marketing; Part IV. Citrus Processing; Part V. Agencies Serving the Citrus Industry The incoming growers knew very little about problems of natural cold protection and their selections of grove sites were not based on the fact that areas close to bodies of water were warm, but primarily because the bodies of water meant ways of transportation. The freeze of 1894 and 1895 brought squarely into the foreground the problem of cold protection and resulted in a spread of the citrus industry to the south. This southward trend was speeded by the freeze of 1899, and the great est area of the citrus industry today is in central Florida, where the cold hazards are far less than those which faced the early growers. Book A Review of the Citrus Greening Research and Development Efforts Supported by the Citrus Research and Development Foundation

Download or read book A Review of the Citrus Greening Research and Development Efforts Supported by the Citrus Research and Development Foundation written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-07-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huanglongbing (HLB) or citrus greening, first observed more than a hundred years ago in Asia, is the most serious disease threat to the citrus-growing industry worldwide due to its complexity, destructiveness, and incalcitrance to management. First detected in Florida in 2005, HLB is now widespread in the state and threatens the survival of the Florida citrus industry despite substantial allocation of research funds by Florida citrus growers and federal and state agencies. As the HLB epidemic raged in 2008, Florida citrus growers began allocating funds for HLB research in hopes of finding short-, medium-, and long-term solutions. This effort created the Citrus Research and Development Foundation (CRDF), an organization with oversight responsibility for HLB research and development efforts in Florida. This report provides an independent review of the portfolio of research projects that have been or continue to be supported by the CRDF. It seeks to identify ways to retool HLB researchâ€"which, despite significantly increasing understanding of the factors involved in HLB, has produced no major breakthroughs in controlling the diseaseâ€"and accelerate the development of durable tools and strategies that could help abate the damage caused by HLB and prevent the possible collapse of the Florida citrus industry.

Book The Genus Citrus

Download or read book The Genus Citrus written by Manuel Talon and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genus Citrus presents the enormous amount of new knowledge that has been generated in recent years on nearly all topics related to citrus. Beginning with an overview of the fundamental principles and understanding of citrus biology and behavior, the book provides a comprehensive view from Citrus evolution to current market importance. Reporting on new insights supported by the elucidation of the citrus genome sequence, it presents groundbreaking theories and fills in previous knowledge gaps. Because citrus is among the most difficult plants to improve through traditional breeding, citrus researchers, institutions and industries must quickly learn to adapt to new developments, knowledge and technologies to address the biological constraints of a unique fruit-tree such as citrus. Despite the challenges of working with citrus, tremendous progress has been made, mostly through advances in molecular biology and genomics. This book is valuable for all those involved with researching and advancing, producing, processing, and delivering citrus products. Includes the most current research on citrus genomic information Provides the first detailed description of citrus origin, a new proposal for citrus taxonomy, and a redefinition of the genus Citrus Details citrus challenges including climate change, global disease impacts, and plant improvement strategies
