But in what ways does this locality actually shape the content and performance of national television? What is the significance of local cultures and local languages in these processes of mediation? And how do the local, the national, and the global intersect in discourses of and discourse on television? Taking a critical discourse analysis perspective, Watching Si Doel investigates these and related questions in the context of contemporary Indonesia. Starting from the nationwide popularity of the local television serial Si Doel Anak Sekolahan ("Educated Doel"), it examines the various ways in which the national government, Indonesian television producers, and local audiences shape, interpret, and struggle over the meaning of the phrase ‘national television’. In doing so, the book explores what Indonesian television at the turn of the century sounds and looks like—and, significantly, ought to sound and look like—according to those who create and control television and those who watch and interpret it. While providing insight into the production, nature, and reception of television discourse in general, this book particularly seeks to clarify the relationship between television, language, and power in late New Order and post-Soeharto Indonesia.

It sees these dominants—for example forms of group body language and forms of consultation—not simply as a product of the nation, but as related to unique and long standing formations and traditions in the numerous societies in the Indonesian archipelago, on which the nation is based. Some argue that the forces that engender diversity have been in the ascendancy for many years, increasing the need to focus on the social, political, and economic consequences of this diversity. What has become clear from these discussions is that nuanced understandings of diversity are desirable and obtainable through a focus on how this diversity has come about and the role of nation-states in the diversification of social life. In Language and Superdiversity, Zane Goebel explores how diversity has been managed in Indonesia since Dutch colonial times and how these practices have produced more diversity. Taking Inspiration from contemporary linguistic anthropological thought, Goebel explains how ethnolinguistic identity in Indonesia has been constituted, reproduced, and valued over the longue durée, and how bits of these identities are used in everyday talk amongst Indonesians living in Japan, Using a wide range of data, he demonstrates how and why management practices have produced hundreds of ethnolinguistic groups in Indonesia, while Increasing Indonesia's diversity in other ways. For transnational Indonesians living in Japan, earlier participation in these management practices has enabled them to draw upon their knowledge of other ethnolinguistic groups to pull off situated identity work in everyday talk. These knowledging practices, Goebel argues, help build and maintain relationships that are important for this group of relative strangers to survive and thrive abroad. Book jacket.

No speaker speaks alone, because our words are always partly shaped by our interactions with others, past and future. Moreover, we never fashion ourselves entirely by ourselves, but always do so in concert with others. Bakhtin thus decisively reshaped modern understandings of language and subjectivity. And yet, the contributors to this volume argue that something is potentially overlooked with too close a focus on dialogism: many speakers, especially in charged political and religious contexts, work energetically at crafting monologues, single-voiced statements to which the only expected response is agreement or faithful replication. Drawing on ethnographic case studies from the United States, Iran, Cuba, Indonesia, Algeria, and Papua New Guinea, the authors argue that a focus on "the monologic imagination" gives us new insights into languages' political design and religious force, and deepens our understandings of the necessary interplay between monological and dialogical tendencies.
