This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,3, University of Tubingen (English Department), course: Introduction to Literature Studies, language: English, abstract: The narration is primarily about wasted opportunities, about a man who is looking back upon his life and wishes he had acted differently. Through his ‘expedition’,Mr Stevens is granted the opportunity to rethink his life, identify the mistakes he made and avoid them in the future. The question is whether he uses this opportunity wisely or if he wastes it. Already in the prologue Mr Stevens admits to have “a reluctance to change too many of the old ways”, and this will be proven to be all-too true (Ishiguro 7). His behaviour and attitude after the journey which could have been a turning point in his life are by and large not altered after his journey.Mr Stevens is not able to change himself in the important areas, namely his restraint, his extreme professionalism, and the attitude towards his father, although he makes some superficial progress regarding Lord Darlington.

Book The History of Missed Opportunities

Download or read book The History of Missed Opportunities written by William Galperin and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through close engagement with the work of Wordsworth, Austen, and Byron, The History of Missed Opportunities posits that the everyday first emerged as a distinct category of experience, or first became thinkable, in the Romantic period. Conceived here as something overlooked and only noticed in retrospect, the everyday not only becomes subject matter for Romanticism, it also structures Romantic poetry, prose, and writing habits. Because the everyday is not noticed the first time around, it comes to be thought of as a missed opportunity, a possible world that was not experienced or taken advantage of and of whose history—or lack thereof—writers become acutely conscious. Consciousness of the everyday also entails a new relationship to time, as the Romantics turn to the history of what might have been. In recounting Romanticism's interest in making things recurrently present, in recovering a past of what was close at hand yet underappreciated, William H. Galperin positions the Romantics as precursors to twentieth-century thinkers of the everyday, including Heidegger, Benjamin, Lefebvre, and Cavell. He attends to Romantic discourse that works at cross purposes with standard accounts of both Romanticism and Romantic subjectivity. Instead of individualizing or turning inward, the Romantics' own discourse depersonalizes or exhibits a confrontation with thing-ness and the material world.

Book Somalia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mohamed Sahnoun
  • Publisher : United States Institute of Peace Press
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 120 pages

Download or read book Somalia written by Mohamed Sahnoun and published by United States Institute of Peace Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1992, starvation, disease, and death had engulfed Somalia and its people. Plagued by the violence of civil war, Somalia had become a country with few resources and great despair electricity, communications, transportation, health services, and food were all in short supply. As disaster befell the country, the international community proved unwilling or unable to provide the humanitarian and peacekeeping assistance that was desperately needed. The result, contends Mohamed Sahnoun, UN special representative to Somalia in 1992, was the continued spread of a tragedy that had already reached unthinkable proportions. In this compelling volume, Sahnoun describes his first-hand experience in Somalia and argues that if the international community and specifically the United Nations had intervened earlier and more effectively, much of the catastrophe that unfolded could have been avoided. In part a vivid personal memoir and in part a case study of multilateral intervention, the book provides concrete examples of how the failure of international intervention in different phases of the crisis in Somalia led to further deterioration. The author also assesses the reasons for the absence of adequate and timely action and examines how the United Nations can better fulfill its expanded role in promoting stability and providing humanitarian relief in the future."

Book Missed Opportunities

Download or read book Missed Opportunities written by Marc Raboy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1990 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Missed Opportunities, Marc Raboy reveals the short-sightedness behind the traditional view of Canadian broadcasting policy as an instrument for promoting a national identity and culture. He argues that Canadian broadcasting policy has served as a political instrument for reinforcing a certain image of Canada against insurgent challenges, such as maintaining the image of Canada as a political entity distinct from the United States and acting against internal threats, most notably from Quebec. It has served as a vehicle for the development of private broadcasting industries and to further the general interests of the Canadian state. Most of the time, Raboy maintains, this policy has been the object of vigorous public dispute.

  • Author : Elie Podeh

Download or read book Chances for Peace written by Elie Podeh and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-11-15 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a newly developed theoretical definition of “missed opportunity,” Chances for Peace uses extensive sources in English, Hebrew, and Arabic to systematically measure the potentiality levels of opportunity across some ninety years of attempted negotiations in the Arab-Israeli conflict. With enlightening revelations that defy conventional wisdom, this study provides a balanced account of the most significant attempts to forge peace, initiated by the world’s superpowers, the Arabs (including the Palestinians), and Israel. From Arab-Zionist negotiations at the end of World War I to the subsequent partition, the aftermath of the 1967 War and the Sadat Initiative, and numerous agreements throughout the 1980s and 1990s, concluding with the Annapolis Conference in 2007 and the Abu Mazen-Olmert talks in 2008, pioneering scholar Elie Podeh uses empirical criteria and diverse secondary sources to assess the protagonists’ roles at more than two dozen key junctures. A resource that brings together historiography, political science, and the practice of peace negotiation, Podeh’s insightful exploration also showcases opportunities that were not missed. Three agreements in particular (Israeli-Egyptian, 1979; Israeli-Lebanese, 1983; and Israeli-Jordanian, 1994) illuminate important variables for forging new paths to successful negotiation. By applying his framework to a broad range of power brokers and time periods, Podeh also sheds light on numerous incidents that contradict official narratives. This unique approach is poised to reshape the realm of conflict resolution.

Book Families Creating Employment Opportunities for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

Download or read book Families Creating Employment Opportunities for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities written by Jennifer Percival and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-30 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an in-depth, qualitative exploration of familial entrepreneurship as an innovative employment model, being established by families in response to difficulties faced by individuals with developmental disabilities in entering the labor market. Drawing on rich qualitative data collected via research with families, this volume explores how and why familial entrepreneurs in the United States have chosen to develop businesses to employ their loved ones. Chapters offer close analysis of the challenges and opportunities associated with familial entrepreneurship and highlight the ways in which this practice supports people with developmental disabilities by providing opportunities for skill development, social interaction, and participation in meaningful activity. Recognizing family entrepreneurship as a new and distinct hybrid employment model, the text goes on to consider how curricula, policy, and state services might better support families and underpin this form of inclusive, adult education. The volume provides important conclusions that contribute to the fields of Disability Studies, Entrepreneurship, Inclusive Education, Adult Education, Exceptional Student Education, Transition, and Vocational Rehabilitation. It is a key reading for scholars in these fields and across Education more widely.

  • ISBN : 0836197925
  • Pages : 239 pages

Download or read book Judges written by Terry L. Brensinger and published by MennoMedia, Inc.. This book was released on 1999-12-10 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terry L. Brensinger explains the ups and downs of the Israelites during the period of the Judges. By tracing developments under each judge, he shows how Israel's condition deteriorates to near-total chaos. The book of Judges begins with depictions of Israel's obedience and faithfulness but ends with disunited and leaderless tribes. The people tend to take their focus away from serving the Lord. Instead, they follow other gods, seek false security, and do what is right in their own eyes. The author provides practical applications for such contemporary issues as religious unfaithfulness, the nature of community, the roles and responsibilities of leaders, and war and violence.
