Download or read book On Theocratic Criminal Law written by Bahman Khodadadi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-25 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Theocratic Criminal Law explores the roots and structures of the criminal law system of the world's most prominent constitutional theocracy, the Islamic Republic of Iran. While discussing the processes of forced de-westernization and de-modernization which occurred in the wake of the Islamic Revolution, this work examines how the Islamic conception of civil order and polity has been established within the legal and theological framework of the Iranian Constitution. The book engages in a process of 'rational reconstruction' of Iranian theocratic criminal law and offers a critical analysis of the way criminal law functions as the centrepiece of this mode of political domination. It illuminates how this revelation-based, punitive ideology functions, how the current Islamic Penal Code (IPC) mirrors prevailing Shiite jurisprudence, and ultimately, from what sort of fundamental defects theocratic criminal law in Iran is suffering. This work provides a critical assessment of the criminalization and sentencing theories that have stemmed from the shariatization (Islamization) of all law in the wake of the Islamic Revolution of 1979. By embarking upon a typology of punishment in Shiite Islamic jurisprudence and the Iranian Islamic Penal Code the book then provides a systematic critical analysis of the three types of punishment stipulated in the Iranian Penal Code, namely ta'zir, hadd, and qisas. It also explores the jurisprudential principles and dynamic power of Shiite Islam not only as a driving force behind political and social change but as a force that has been capable of forging a whole theocratic legal system.

Book Blood

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gil Anidjar
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2014-05-06
  • ISBN : 0231167202
  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book Blood written by Gil Anidjar and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blood, in Gil AnidjarÕs argument, maps the singular history of Christianity. A category for historical analysis, blood can be seen through its literal and metaphorical uses as determining, sometimes even defining, Western culture, politics, and social practices and their wide-ranging incarnations in nationalism, capitalism, and law. Engaging with a variety of sources, Anidjar explores the presence and the absence, the making and unmaking of blood in philosophy and medicine, law and literature, and economic and political thought, from ancient Greece to medieval Spain, from the Bible to Shakespeare and Melville. The prevalence of blood in the social, juridical, and political organization of the modern West signals that we do not live in a secular age into which religion could return. Flowing across multiple boundaries, infusing them with violent precepts that we must address, blood undoes the presumed oppositions between religion and politics, economy and theology, and kinship and race. It demonstrates that what we think of as modern is in fact imbued with Christianity. Christianity, Blood fiercely argues, must be reconsidered beyond the boundaries of religion alone.

Book The Gift Relationship Reissue

Download or read book The Gift Relationship Reissue written by Titmuss, Richard and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Titmuss (1907-1973) was a pioneer in the field of social administration (now social policy). In this reissued classic, listed by the New York Times as one of the 10 most important books of the year when it was first published in 1970, he compares blood donation in the US and UK, contrasting the British system of reliance on voluntary donors to the American one in which the blood supply is in the hands of for-profit enterprises, concluding that a system based on altruism is both safer and more economically efficient. Titmuss’s argument about how altruism binds societies together has proved a powerful tool in the analysis of welfare provision. His analysis is even more topical now in an age of ever changing health care policy and at a time when health and welfare systems are under sustained attack from many quarters.

Book Wasted Blood

Download or read book Wasted Blood written by Kenneth Palmer and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-06-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's an old joke-"What's the difference between a Sea Story and a Fairy-tale?" A Fairy-tale starts with- "Once upon a time" and ends with "They lived happily ever after." A Sea story starts with "This aint no shit." If you're listening to Sea Stories, well, you can never tell where they're going to end and they don't always end with "Living Happily Ever After." The story you are about to read sounds like a Sea Story with a back story that sounds like a Fairytale. Neither of those thoughts is true and veterans of any war would think this had to be planned by the "Big Boys" someplace. It wasn't! I was 21 and since high school I had been carrying around an old guitar that was my Dad's. He had bought a new one from my uncle. Both sides of my family are musical When I came to Gulf Port, Mississippi from Boot Camp it came with me from home as carryon baggage, when I reported to the Construction Battalion Center awaiting the Battalion's return from Nam. When they came back, again, it came with me! I always liked to play, and with somebody always around, unless someone was sleeping; I'd play after work as I was waiting for one of my friends on our way to chow, I'd play a few notes or a song before heading out. I guess word got around because someone heard me, and told someone else. The rest just happened! Like a guitar player's dream, in the last place you'd expect a Rock, Country and Mo Town band in whose name alone stated how the people in our country felt at the time; to form and play and add a little more to rock n roll history in the War everyone at home was protesting. In some cases I only added a little to the story because my memory is foggy. But all events happened. I may have the sequence of the occurrences wrong, but they all happened. Other than the names of the guys in the band and our commanding officer, all names have been changed. The songs and partial lyrics were and are part of all of our lives living then, and since that time.

Book A TRAMP S TOUR

Download or read book A TRAMP S TOUR written by Rod Leger and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-26 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When author Rod Leger got drafted in the middle of 1966, he was in his freshman year of college. The next few years transformed his life. In this memoir, he recalls his feelings as a college student in the period leading up to the war. At the time, he never considered that the war might not be the best idea. After all, if the country was drafting young men to fight and die overseas, then it must have been right. He enlisted in the US Navy’s American Seabees, and because he completed a year of college, he was designated as a “striker” and trained as a builder. Although he spent some time in the States, he was destined to go overseas to Vietnam, where he served two tours of duty. As a member of the Seabees, he helped bring free medical care to outlying villages. The Seabees built permanent clinics, constructed roads, improved or installed infrastructure, provided clean water wells, and improved the quality of life for many Vietnamese citizens. The members of Leger’s squad also made it a personal mission to help an area orphanage. In A Tramp’s Tour, Leger shares the story of his Vietnam experience and of how the Seabees lived up to their motto: “We build for the fighters, we fight for the builders.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal areas are remarkable regions with high spatiotemporal variability. A large population is affected by their physical and biological processes—resulting from effects on tourism to biodiversity and productivity. Coastal ecosystems perform several critical ecosystem services and functions, such as water oxygenation and nutrients provision, seafloor and beach stabilization (as sediment is controlled and trapped within the rhizomes of the seagrass meadows), carbon burial, as areas for nursery, and as refuge for several commercial and endemic species. Knowledge of the spatial distribution of marine habitats is prerequisite information for the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources. Remote sensing from UAVs to spaceborne sensors is offering a unique opportunity to measure, analyze, quantify, map, and explore the processes on the coastal areas at high temporal frequencies. This Special Issue on “Application of Remote Sensing in Coastal Areas” is specifically addresses those successful applications—from local to regional scale—in coastal environments related to ecosystem productivity, biodiversity, sea level rise.
