Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of pond technology is now recognized globally and indeed is undergoing a renaissance at the present time. It was therefore no surprise that scientists and engineers from over 25 countries presented their most recent findings at the Marrakech conference. The choice of Morocco was especially appropriate as it, like most countries of the Magreb, has actively endorsed and implemented the use of waste stabilization ponds as a preferred wastewater treatment technology. The need to reuse treated wastewater is a key component of the water cycle in such water-short regions, and the crucial role that ponds can play in the safe reuse of effluents, particularly for agriculture, has also been recognized and supported by active research at institutions all round the world. This issue contains a selection of the papers presented both in the oral and poster sessions at the conference and should prove very informative for those who wish to keep abreast of developments in the field. Among the 52 papers selected from the oral and poster sessions for these proceedings are work on the performance of ponds systems worldwide, pond microbiology, nutrient removal, pond sludges and sediments, pond design and modeling, high-rate ponds, and effluent reuse.

Book Notes on the Design and Operation of Waste Stabilization Ponds in Warm Climates of Developing Countries

Download or read book Notes on the Design and Operation of Waste Stabilization Ponds in Warm Climates of Developing Countries written by J. P. Arthur and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper acknowledges that water carriage sewerage systems are not always the most appropriate sanitation solution for the disposal of liquid domestic wastes in developing countries. However, where water carriage systems are proposed, the first treatment option which should always be considered is the use of stabilization ponds, because in many instances, they represent the most cost effective and efficient way of treating domestic sewage flows. The paper results from a review of pond systems installed in six countries and concludes that: (i) designs differ widely; (ii) maximum use is not made of anaerobic ponds or the reuse potential of effluents; (iii) pond systems are frequently grossly overdesigned; and (iv) the designs are not responsive to the incremental growth encountered in LDCs. Practical design criteria are given for pond systems over a range of ambient temperature conditions and end use requirements together with notes on start up procedures, operation and trouble shooting. The recommendations are derived in part from the Israeli experience where considerable use is made of treated sewage effluent for irrigation purposes.

Book Waste Stabilization Ponds in Latin America

Download or read book Waste Stabilization Ponds in Latin America written by Miguel R. Pena and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waste stabilization ponds and related natural wastewater treatment technologies are now widely seen as practical options to solve water quality problems. These systems can also contribute to tackling growing water shortages by enabling significant water reuse (and often nutrient recovery). These benefits are particularly relevant in regions such as Latin America which are facing continuous change in policy and regulation affecting water, sanitation and environmental management, yet are also characterised by a low public service coverage, particularly in low-income urban communities and rural settlements. Thus Latin American countries are at the forefront of the worldwide trend to the use of pond treatment systems. Countries such as Brazil, Cuba and Peru have considerable experience in pond technology, while countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela are implementing new systems. To understand the developments taking place the 1st IWA Regional Conference was held, bringing together scientists, engineers and professionals from several disciplines. From the papers presented 17, from across Latin America and beyond, have been selected for these proceedings that summarise the latest advances in ponding technology.

Book Domestic Wastewater Treatment in Developing Countries

Download or read book Domestic Wastewater Treatment in Developing Countries written by Duncan Mara and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affordable and effective domestic wastewater treatment is a critical issue in public health and disease prevention around the world, particularly so in developing countries which often lack the financial and technical resources necessary for proper treatment facilities. This practical guide provides state-of-the-art coverage of methods for domestic wastewater treatment and provides a foundation to the practical design of wastewater treatment and re-use systems. The emphasis is on low-cost, low-energy, low-maintenance, high-performance 'natural' systems that contribute to environmental sustainability by producing effluents that can be safely and profitably used in agriculture for crop irrigation and/or in aquaculture, for fish and aquatic vegetable pond fertilization. Modern design methodologies, with worked design examples, are described for waste stabilization ponds, wastewater storage and treatment reservoirs; constructed wetlands, upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors, biofilters, aerated lagoons and oxidation ditches. This book is essential reading for engineers, academics and upper-level and graduate students in engineering, wastewater management and public health, and others interested in sustainable and cost-effective technologies for reducing wastewater-related diseases and environmental damage.

Book Pond Treatment Technology

Download or read book Pond Treatment Technology written by Andrew Shilton and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pond treatment technology is used in tens of thousands of applications serving many millions of people across the globe - why? Simply because it is efficient and effective. While pond treatment technology offers relative simplicity in its application, it incorporates a host of complex and diverse mechanisms that work to treat and cleanse polluted waters before their return to our environment. This book offers a comprehensive review of the pond technology field including the newest ideas and latest findings. Topics covered include: The physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the pond environment; A detailed review of pond treatment mechanisms and performance; Comprehensive guidance on pond design, operation and upgrade options; A range of chapters summarising new and emerging pond technologies; The integration of ponds with wetlands and aquaculture systems and their use as storage reservoirs; Special applications of pond technology in cold climates, for agricultural wastes and for treatment of stormwater. The objective of this book is to get this wealth of knowledge "out there" to the users to ensure the continuous improvement and ongoing success of this crucial technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ponds (lagoons) have been used for centuries with great success in the treatment of wastewater. Ponds created for treatment, known as stabilization ponds, model the physical and biochemical interactions that occur in natural ponds. Easy to build and manage, stabilization ponds can accommodate large fluctuations in flow, and provide results that are
