Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to examine possible waste heat recovery methods in data centers. Predictions indicate that in the next decade data center racks may dissipate 70kW of heat, up from the current levels of 10-15kW. Due to this increase, solutions must be found to increase the efficiency of data center cooling. This thesis will examine possible waste heat recovery technologies which will improve energy efficiency. Possible approaches include phase change materials, thermoelectrics, thermomagnetics, vapor compression cycles, absorbtion and adsorbtion systems. After a thorough evaluation of the possible waste heat engines, the use of an ejector heat pump was evaluated in detail. The principle behind an ejector heat pump is very similar to a vapor compression cycle. However, the compressor is replaced with a pump, boiler and an ejector. These three components require less moving parts and are more cost effective then a comparable compressor, despite a lower efficiency. This system will be examined under general operating conditions in a data center. The heat load is around 15-20kW and air temperatures near 85°C. A parametric study is conducted to determine the viability and cost effectiveness of this system in the data center. Included will be various environmentally friendly working fluids that satisfy the low temperature ranges found in a data center. It is determined that Ammonia presents the best option as a working fluid for this application. Using this system a Coefficient Of Performance of 1.538 at 50°C can be realized. This will result in an estimated 373,000 kW-hr saved over a year and a $36,425 reduction in annual cost. Finally, recommendations for implementation are considered to allow for future design and testing of this viable waste heat recovery device.

Book excerpt: Increasing computational demands in data centers require facilities to operate at higher ambient temperatures and at higher power densities. Conventionally, data centers are cooled with electrically-driven vapor-compressor equipment. This paper proposes an alternative data center cooling architecture that is heat-driven. The source is heat produced by the computer equipment. This dissertation details experiments investigating the quantity and quality of heat that can be captured from a liquid-cooled microprocessor on a computer server blade from a data center. The experiments involve four liquid-cooling setups and associated heat-extraction, including a radical approach using mineral oil. The trials examine the feasibility of using the thermal energy from a CPU to drive a cooling process. Uniquely, the investigation establishes an interesting and useful relationship simultaneously among CPU temperatures, power, and utilization levels. In response to the system data, this project explores the heat, temperature and power effects of adding insulation, varying water flow, CPU loading, and varying the cold plate-to-CPU clamping pressure. The idea is to provide an optimal and steady range of temperatures necessary for a chiller to operate. Results indicate an increasing relationship among CPU temperature, power and utilization. Since the dissipated heat can be captured and removed from the system for reuse elsewhere, the need for electricity-consuming computer fans is eliminated. Thermocouple readings of CPU temperatures as high as 93°C and a calculated CPU thermal energy up to 67Wth show a sufficiently high temperature and thermal energy to serve as the input temperature and heat medium input to an absorption chiller. This dissertation performs a detailed analysis of the exergy of a processor and determines the maximum amount of energy utilizable for work. Exergy as a source of realizable work is separated into its two contributing constituents: thermal exergy and informational exergy. The informational exergy is that usable form of work contained within the most fundamental unit of information output by a switching device within a CPU. Exergetic thermal, informational and efficiency values are calculated and plotted for our particular CPU, showing how the datasheet standards compare with experimental values. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of the work's significance.

The chosen cooling method is the thermosyphon loop, as it allows the transfer of high powers over a long distance. The chosen evaporator is a microchannel heat exchanger, the condenser is formed by finned tubes. An experimental parametric study is made by varying the fill ratio, the thermal power of the servers and the outside temperature of the air ensuring the cooling by natural convection. A second experimental study is done by cooling the condenser with water in forced convection. An annual numerical study on data centers in several cities in France is done to quantify the energy savings achieved with passive and hybrid cooling. The pPUE (partial power use efficiency) coefficient is calculated to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed cooling system. Finally, the thermosyphon loop is combined with a heat pump in order to recover heat from the data centers and distribute it. The energy savings of the proposed system are compared to the use of a boiler to heat a house. An economic study is made to calculate the payback period in several climates. The ERE (energy reuse efficiency) coefficient is also calculated to evaluate the capacity of the heat recovery system.

A simplified model was created to perform preliminary performance estimations and system sizing before constructing an experimental system apparatus to evaluate the model predictions. The pressures and temperatures used in the model and instituted in the experimental system are based on the maximum temperatures typically observed in computing servers (50-75°C). Precision controlled heaters are used to simulate the computer server heat, and R245fa is used as the working fluid. Performance results ranged from 0.06 to 0.13.
