Book excerpt: The historic encounter around 1911 between the composer Arnold Schönberg and the painter Wassily Kandinsky occurred at a moment when the first wild revolts against traditional art, Dada and Futurism, had just manifested themselves. Independently of those sometimes spectacular activities, both Schönberg and Kandinsky had already concluded that the material and the compositional methods they had relied on in the past were exhausted and did not satisfy the development of their artistic ideas. Both artists had already submitted their modes of production to a critical analysis which resulted in Schonberg's Theory of Harmony and Kandinsky's Concerning the Spiritual in Art , both of 1911 - indeed the two artists had already been putting their self-criticism into practice for some time. In Schönberg's case this led to breaking with tonality; Kandinsky effected the transition to abstract painting. This book is a collection of the papers presented at the conference on Schönberg and Kandin

Book Arnold Schoenberg and Wassily Kandinsky

Download or read book Arnold Schoenberg and Wassily Kandinsky written by Sohee Kim and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expressionism was a radical form of art at the start of twentieth century, totally different from previous norms of artistic expression. Schoenberg's attention to expressionism in music is related to personal tragedies such as his marital crisis. Schonberg solved the issues of extremely emotional content with atonality, and devoted himself to painting works such as 'Visions' that show his anger and uneasiness. Both Schoenberg and Kandinsky gained their most significant artistic development almost at the same time while struggling to find their own voices, that is, their inner necessity, within an indifferent social environment. Both Schoenberg and Kandinsky also embodied Gesamtkunstwerk idea throughout their artistic works, Die glückliche Hand and Der gelbe Klang. An analysis of Schoenberg's two compositions, Erwartung and Die glückliche Hand, shows their similar use of extreme contrasts, and the changing emotional states of the characters. He consistently employs particular tone colors for the opera's main characters, and specifies colors and lighting to highlight psychological impact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arnold Schoenberg’s close involvement with many of the principal developments of twentieth-century music, most importantly the break with tonality and the creation of twelve-tone composition, generated controversy from the time of his earliest works to the present day. This authoritative new collection of Schoenberg’s essays, letters, literary writings, musical sketches, paintings, and drawings offers fresh insights into the composer’s life, work, and thought. The documents, many previously unpublished or untranslated, reveal the relationships between various aspects of Schoenberg’s activities in composition, music theory, criticism, painting, performance, and teaching. They also show the significance of events in his personal and family life, his evolving Jewish identity, his political concerns, and his close interactions with such figures as Gustav and Alma Mahler, Alban Berg, Wassily Kandinsky, and Thomas Mann. Extensive commentary by Joseph Auner places the documents and materials in context and traces important themes throughout Schoenberg’s career from turn-of-century Vienna to Weimar Berlin to nineteen-fifties Los Angeles.

The liaison between music and the visual arts has inspired countless generations of artists. The two have had manifold complex interactions across all periods of history, in Western and non-Western contexts alike, yet their intersection has only become a rich vein for research by art historians and musicologists in the last thirty years. By tracing these relationships, new insights into the affinities of the arts become clear"--

Book Concerning the Spiritual in Art

Download or read book Concerning the Spiritual in Art written by Wassily Kandinsky and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A seminal text in the history of modern art, from one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century ‘Art is the language that speaks to the soul’ Why do we make art? In Concerning the Spiritual in Art Wassily Kandinsky, one of the earliest and most famous abstract painters, argued against ‘art for art’s sake’. Exploring form and colour, spirituality and tradition, Kandinsky instead predicted a future for painting in its potential to redirect the attention of viewers away from the shallow materialism of the modern world toward the more profound intellectual and emotional concerns of their interior lives. His revolutionary work became a landmark in modern art history, helping to usher in the age of non-representational painting. This new translation also includes Kandinsky’s later essay, ‘The Question of Form’, in which he interrogates and sharpens many of his earlier ideas. A new translation by Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp With an introduction by Lisa Florman
