This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington, the City and the Seat of Government Washington for so long a period played the part of Ugly Duckling among our urban centers, was for so many years allowed by its legal spon sors to remain in a state of rustic backwardness, that early Americans acquired a habit of think ing of their capital with indifference and speaking of it slightingly. Not. Until sixty-five years after it became the seat of the government was it un questionably accepted as the permanent center of the country, and still another decade passed before Congress assumed its equitable share of the burden Of maintenance and improvement, and so made it possible for the city to grow to its present con dition of beauty and magnificence. The factors that militated against the growth of the city, the actual and constructive relations that existed between the municipality and the Government, and the Splendid struggle made by the inhabitants to lift the capital out of the slough of stagnation in which it lay for more than half a century, are not generally known. They are matters that have been omitted, as a rule, from books dealing with the city of Washington, but the writer of the present volume believes that he has served a useful purpose in setting them forth at some length. Well up on the roll of this new group of statesmen stands the name Of Stephen A. Doug las, Of Illinois, who in 1847, after four years of service in the House, took the seat in the Senate which he was to occupy until his death. He was its youngest member when he entered the Senate, a short, thick-set man Of thirty-four, with a swarthy, clean-shaven face, and eyes which, in moments Of excitement, became as large and impressive as those Of Webster. His also was a mind capable Of grasping, analyzing, and elucidating the most complex and difficult subjects, either in the science Of law or that Of government, and to these qualities he added a gift for strong and simple speech, a courageous vigor, and a manly boldness which quickly made him a leader on the floor and a foremost figure in the councils Of his party. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington, Vol. 1: The Capital City and Its Part in the History of the Nation The writer who undertakes to tell the story of Washington confronts a task the like of which is presented by none of its sister cities. The federal capital during its hundred years of existence has been the political centre of the republic, the birthplace of parties and legislation, the training-ground and forum of one generation after another of public men. Indeed, from its founding until the present time it has been the brain and heart of the nation. This fact has been kept constantly in mind in the writing of the present work, and, while sketching the rise of Washington from a wilderness hamlet to one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, the author has also attempted adequately to portray the political growth and development of the republic.
