Book A Framework for Developing and Evaluating Comprehensive Urban Forest Management Plans

Download or read book A Framework for Developing and Evaluating Comprehensive Urban Forest Management Plans written by Katherine H. Gibbons and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The urban forest is a diverse and dynamic resource that is inextricably linked to the surrounding community. A comprehensive urban forest management plan helps communities create a shared vision and develop a set of goals and actions that serve as a municipality's guide for management. Using content analysis and an evaluative framework, this study examined the comprehensiveness of 39 urban forest management plans in Washington State. Nearly all plans address the management of trees, but few plans specifically address the community's role in urban forest management. Public participation in the plan writing process significantly influenced the overall comprehensiveness of the plans, supporting the claim that urban forest management should be an inclusive, community-wide process. Most Washington plans lack detailed implementation guidelines and nearly all plans lack a written strategy for monitoring and measuring performance. Plan content varies depending on municipalities' unique management objectives, suggesting that a one-size-fits-all approach is not appropriate in the development of an urban forest management plan. However, the results suggest that an adaptable framework and set of criteria would be useful to municipalities as they plan for managing this diverse and complex resource.

Book Forest Plans of North America

Download or read book Forest Plans of North America written by Jacek P. Siry and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Plans of North America presents case studies of contemporary forest management plans developed for forests owned by federal, state, county, and municipal governments, communities, families, individuals, industry, investment organizations, conservation organizations, and others in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The book provides excellent real-life examples of contemporary forest planning processes, the various methods used, and the diversity of objectives and constraints faced by forest owners. Chapters are written by those who have developed the plans, with each contribution following a unified format and allowing a common, clear presentation of the material, along with consistent treatment of various aspects of the plans. This work complements other books published by members of the same editorial team (Forest Management and Planning, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resource Management), which describe the planning process and the various methods one might use to develop a plan, but in general do not, as this work does, illustrate what has specifically been developed by landowners and land managers. This is an in-depth compilation of case studies on the development of forest management plans by the different landowner groups in North America. The book offers students, practitioners, policy makers, and the general public an opportunity to greatly improve their appreciation of forest management and, more importantly, foster an understanding of why our forests today are what they are and what forces and tools may shape their tomorrow. Forest Plans of North America provides a solid supplement to those texts that are used as learning tools for forest management courses. In addition, the work functions as a reference for the types of processes used and issues addressed in the early 21st century for managing land resources. Presents 40-50 case studies of forest plans developed for a wide variety of organizations, groups, and landowners in North America Illustrates plans that have specifically been developed by landowners and land managers Features engaging, clearly written content that is accessible rather than highly technical, while demonstrating the issues and methods involved in the development of the plans Each chapter contains color photographs, maps, and figures

Book Implementing Comprehensive Urban Forest Management Plans

Download or read book Implementing Comprehensive Urban Forest Management Plans written by Jacob J. Pederson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban forest management plans (UFMPs) are developed by many communities in order to provide a common vision for urban forest health and sustainability, establish goals, and coordinate actions toward achieving them. This multiple-case study used document analysis and semi-structured interviews with staff in six cities to investigate how UFMPs have been implemented in Washington State. Results indicate that staff actively use UFMP documents to guide and justify action, solve disputes, and promote awareness of urban forestry issues within city bureaucracies and to the community at large. Positive and negative social impacts of implementation efforts influence the political standing of urban forestry programs, suggesting that the political and social skill of city staff, their superiors, and community advocates are key factors in the success of implementation. In some cases, informal implementation strategies focus on associating urban forestry activities with community identity, public safety, and storm water management. In others, implementation is highly dependent on regulatory mandates specified by local ordinance.

Yet there hasn’t been a complete resource for Pacific Northwest forest stewards until now. In this comprehensive how-to, authors Kirk Hanson and Seth Zuckerman explore all aspects of forest management—everything from how to evaluate a piece of land before you buy it through implementing long-term plans that may include establishing new stands of trees, harvesting mushrooms as well as wood, and protecting your forests far into the future through wildfire risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and conservation easements. Loaded with helpful tables and illustrations that address the pros and cons of various species and how to best care for wildlife and the land, A Forest of Your Own is a clear guide to the many rewards of ecological forestry.
