Book excerpt: Charles Duelfer is one of the most senior intelligence officers with on-the-ground experience to have worked in Iraq before, during, and after the Gulf War. His 2004 CIA report is widely renowned as the most authoritative account on how the world was led to believe that Saddam possessed weapons of mass destruction. But until now, Duelfer has never publicly shared his unrivaled expertise on just how the U.S.-Iraq relationship spiraled into a second war, and ultimately into chaos. Hide and Seek is his account -- based on unparalleled access to Iraqi leadership, the White House, and the CIA -- of the long and tragic unraveling of the U.S. relationship with Iraq. This book sees beyond the propaganda and deceits of both sides to tell the story of the miscalculations in assessing Iraq as a threat, why Saddam responded as he did to U.S. demands, and precisely how the U.S. implemented its decision to topple Saddam's regime. No one is better able than Duelfer to see inside the mindsets of the two administrations, with their mismatched priorities, wounded pride, and dangerous ability to bluff and counterbluff.

Book Washington

Download or read book Washington written by Douglas Southall Freeman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Freeman's treatment of Washington as a Commander in Chief is virtually definitive" (The New York Times Book Review). Washington is the most complete, definitive one-volume biography of George Washington ever written. In 1948 renowned biographer and military historian Douglas Southall Freeman won his second Pulitzer Prize for his new and dramatic reexamination of George Washington. For years biographies had gone from idolatry to muckraking in their depictions of this somewhat marbleized Founding Father. Freeman’s new interpretation was a fresh step, making Washington a living, breathing individual, flawed but heroic. An able commander who defeated the British Empire against incredible odds, Washington proved to be just as adept at wielding political power, and adroitly steered our new loosely called nation through the first stormy years of our unproven federal stewardship and the first two presidential administrations. Here with an introduction by Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Kammen, who puts the writing and publication of Washington into perspective, and an afterword by Pulitzer Prize winner Dumas Malone, who explains the travails of Freeman’s grinding work, Washington is the most comprehensive biography available, and its value as an important classic has never been more evident.

Book George Washington s Smallest Army

Download or read book George Washington s Smallest Army written by Grandpa Dennis and published by Author House. This book was released on 2009-02-04 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Washington's Smallest Army is a fanciful, feel good tale of three critters who live around Miller's Pond in Pennsylvania, and how they help George Washington at a critical time in the Revolutionary War. Before they help him, a wise owl teaches a young frog to speak other critter languages, and they later recruit a third critter--a white mouse-- to help them "civilize" the critters around the pond. They save the life of a large wolf, and later meet George Washington who has just been chased out of New Jersey by the Redcoats. At this point they create a clever plan that helps George build confidence to later cross the Delaware River and defeat the Redcoats at Trenton and Princeton. The story is consistent with historic accounts of the Revolutionary War, and one must wonder, did it really happen this way? It's possible, maybe.

Book Combating Proliferation

Download or read book Combating Proliferation written by Jason D. Ellis and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-02-23 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected by Choice Magazine as an Outstanding Academic Title The intelligence community's flawed assessment of Iraq's weapons systems—and the Bush administration's decision to go to war in part based on those assessments—illustrates the political and policy challenges of combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. In this comprehensive assessment, defense policy specialists Jason Ellis and Geoffrey Kiefer find disturbing trends in both the collection and analysis of intelligence and in its use in the development and implementation of security policy. Analyzing a broad range of recent case studies—Pakistan's development of nuclear weapons, North Korea's defiance of U.N. watchdogs, Russia's transfer of nuclear and missile technology to Iran and China's to Pakistan, the Soviet biological warfare program, weapons inspections in Iraq, and others—the authors find that intelligence collection and analysis relating to WMD proliferation are becoming more difficult, that policy toward rogue states and regional allies requires difficult tradeoffs, and that using military action to fight nuclear proliferation presents intractable operational challenges. Ellis and Kiefer reveal that decisions to use—or overlook—intelligence are often made for starkly political reasons. They document the Bush administration's policy shift from nonproliferation, which emphasizes diplomatic tools such as sanctions and demarches, to counterproliferation, which at times employs interventionist and preemptive actions. They conclude with cogent recommendations for intelligence services and policy makers.
