Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True Story of the Exodus of Israel: Together With a Brief View of the History of Monumental Egypt The antiquity of Egypt, however, is not its Only claim upon the veneration of men: literature, the arts, and the ideas of morality and religion, so far as we know, had their birth in the Nile valley. The alphabet, if it was constructed in Phoenicia, was conceived in Egypt, or developed from Egyp tian characters. Language, doubtless, is as old as man, but the visible symbols of speech were first formulated from the hieroglyphic figures. Download or read book Ancient Israel in Sinai written by James K. Hoffmeier and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his pathbreaking Israel in Egypt James K. Hoffmeier sought to refute the claims of scholars who doubt the historical accuracy of the biblical account of the Israelite sojourn in Egypt. Analyzing a wealth of textual, archaeological, and geographical evidence, he put forth a thorough defense of the biblical tradition. Hoffmeier now turns his attention to the Wilderness narratives of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. As director of the North Sinai Archaeological Project, Hoffmeier has led several excavations that have uncovered important new evidence supporting the Wilderness narratives, including a major New Kingdom fort at Tell el-Borg that was occupied during the Israelite exodus. Hoffmeier employs these archaeological findings to shed new light on the route of the exodus from Egypt. He also investigates the location of Mount Sinai, and offers a rebuttal to those who have sought to locate it in northern Arabia and not in the Sinai peninsula as traditionally thought. Hoffmeier addresses how and when the Israelites could have lived in Sinai, as well as whether it would have been possible for Moses to write down the law received at Mount Sinai. Building on the new evidence for the Israelite sojourn in Egypt, Hoffmeier explores the Egyptian influence on the Wilderness tradition. For example, he finds Egyptian elements in Israelite religious practices, including the use of the tabernacle, and points to a significant number of Egyptian personal names among the generation of the exodus. The origin of Israel is a subject of much debate and the wilderness tradition has been marginalized by those who challenge its credibility. In Ancient Israel in Sinai, Hoffmeier brings the Wilderness tradition to the forefront and makes a case for its authenticity based on solid evidence and intelligent analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt and Israel So many books have appeared dealing with the historical view of the Bible, and treating it in every stage of knowledge, of belief, and of disbelief, that any fresh work of such a scope should state its general line of treatment, and the public for whom it is intended. The purpose of this volume is to illustrate the general historical setting of the narratives of the Old Testament and Christian times; to see how we must understand them as part of the history of the period; to see what consistent conclusion we can reach on taking into account all the circumstances; and to show the point of view of a general historian in regard to these narratives. This position has the disadvantages of a middle course. Those whose criticism runs to proving every statement unhistorical, may resent the plain acceptance of documents and statements, wherever not modified or disproved by more certain sources. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This close synchronic analysis of Exodus 1-2 looks at how the pericope's structure, language, focalization and management of information form its conception and judgement of its events and characters. A coherence of concerns is detectable in Exodus 1-2 with allusions to Genesis and the later chapters of Exodus. One chapter is assigned to each of seven narrative unities and deals in various ways with its narrative problems. The resulting eclectic choice of analytical tools includes the study of Proppian structural functions, repetition, public rhetoric, narrative speeds, order and symbolism.

Book Did I Not Bring Israel Out of Egypt

Download or read book Did I Not Bring Israel Out of Egypt written by James K. Hoffmeier and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hebrew Scriptures consider the exodus from Egypt to be Israel’s formative and foundational event. Indeed, the Bible offers no other explanation for Israel’s origin as a people. It is also true that no contemporary record regarding a man named Moses or the Israelites generally, either living in or leaving Egypt has been found. Hence, many biblical scholars and archaeologists take a skeptical attitude, dismissing the exodus from the realm of history. However, the contributors to this volume are convinced that there is an alternative, more positive approach. Using textual and archaeological materials from the ancient Near East in a comparative way, in conjunction with the Torah’s narratives and with other biblical texts, the contributors to this volume (specialists in ancient Egypt, ancient Near Eastern culture and history, and biblical studies) maintain that the reports in the Hebrew Bible should not be cavalierly dismissed for ideological reasons but, rather, should be deemed to contain authentic memories.

Book The Route of the Exodus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Route of the Exodus Classic Reprint written by Edouard Naville and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Route of the Exodus I shall recall only in a few words what concerns the arrival of the Israelites in Egypt. Most Egyptologists have adopted as correct the statement for which we are indebted to the Byzantine chronographer Syncellus, who says that it was under the king Apophis, in Egyptian A pepi, that Joseph attained the high dignity which is described in Scripture. Apepi is known to us as one of the last, perhaps even the very last, Hyksos king. The Hyksos were foreign invaders, and, in all probability, Mesopotamians, who had been driven out of their country by great events which took place in the valley of the Tigris and the Euphrates. They were a mixed race; the mass of the population seems to have been Semitic, while their rulers, judging from the type Of their faces, such as they are seen on the monuments of Tanis and Bubastis, were of Turanian origin. Undoubtedly their invasion had been marked, as is related by Manetho, by destruction, plunder, and violence, as is usual in Eastern wars; but the Hyksos h'ad soon yielded to the influence of the more cultivated race over which they reigned. The conquered had by degrees overcome the conquerors, who had adopted the customs, the language, the writing, the civilization of the Egyptians; all except the religion. For, notwithstanding several centuries of dominion, the religion still raised between the Hyksos and their subjects an in separable barrier. They reigned ignoring Ra, meaning in hostility against the Sun-god. Such is the way in which a native queen describes their rule two centuries after the first rebellion against them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rephaim: And Their Connection With Egyptian History Before we can hope to understand fully the political condition of Egypt and that of Israel, at the momentous epoch when the latter were brought out of the house of bondage to be made a nation among nations, we must ascend the stream of time some five centuries, in order to study the revolutions wrought during that interval in the condition of those people of Palestine who were the precursors of Israel in the land; and who, under the appointment of an overruling Providence, were the principal agents in working out - indirectly, the destinies of Israel, - and directly, those of Egypt. The two centuries preceding the Exode are a point in time when the history of these two nations unites and we must look to Palestine for the connecting link between them.
